Pinelawn Memorial Park And Arboretum Hosts 3rd Annual Honey Bee Experience
On Sunday September 19th, 2021, Pinelawn Memorial Park and Arboretum hosted its 3rd annual Honey Bee Experience event as part of its ongoing community education program. This educational and fun event highlighted the importance of honey bees in our environment and provided a safe, up-close look at these marvelous insects. Pinelawn hosts five beehives on property and those hives help in pollinating various gardens, trees and shrubs on the property. Over 320 guests attended the free event that featured educational activities such as honey bee arts & crafts, a “Find The Queen” activity where children searched for the queen
bee within the observation hive, and fresh honey tasting. Pinelawn’s Master Beekeeper, Steve Chen, led a short Q&A and indepth, hands-on learning experience at the hives. Some beekeepers have reported annual hive losses of 30% or more due to many causes including viruses, pesticide use, habitat loss, and climate change. As more and more honey bee species are added to the list of endangered species, it is becoming more necessary than ever to educate the public on the essentialness of these insects. DOMINICAN VILLAGE’S DR. NANCY LEFTENANT-COLON CELEBRATES 101 YEARS! -Nancy celebrated her birthday surrounded by family, friends and a special Zoom presentation from fellow Tuskegee Airmen extending Happy Birthday wishes. Described as a “trailblazer” Nancy has lived through generations of American history. Her long list of firsts includes: First commissioned African American nurse to be integrated into the Army Nurse Corps. First (and only women) to be president of the Tuskegee Airmen, Inc. and along with others, she received the Congressional Gold Medal from President George W. Bush on March 29, 2007. In 2018 Amityville Memorial High School Library was named in her honor. Most recently, Nancy was inducted into the Tuskegee Airmen Inc. Hall of Fame. Nancy says, “I’m not done yet”!

- Nathan’s famous hot dogs and fries were served, and carnival games were played. Day at the Races was action packed, staff were the jockeys and the residents’ placed bets on who would win. The week ended with a Sock Hop dance party!

Over time, homelessness has continued to become a growing community challenging, through deinstitutionalization, national de-funding of safety net programs in the 1980s, the war on drugs, housing market crashes, recessions, natural disasters and most significantly (as the number one cause of homelessness on Long Island and nation-wide) the extremely high costs of housing and other expenses to live on Long Island, amongst other things. First of Its Kind Litter Trap Helps Stop Debris from Reaching Great South Bay
Save the Great South Bay, a local 501(c)3 environmental nonprofit, recently teamed up with the Town of Babylon’s Department of Environmental Control installing a unique Bandalong Bandit Litter Trap along the Carll’s River to passively capture floating litter and debris before it flows into the Bay. The litter trap was donated by Gerogia-based Stormwater Systems after outreach by organization member Walt Meshenberg. The trap passively collects floatables 24/7/365 using only the natural current. It also features a patented tidal gate which prevents trash from exiting the trap without netting or fencing making it safe for all aquatic wildlife. Eric Hewlett of Stormwater Systems who was on hand to help out with the install said it was true to form with other installs he has done around the country. “This is another stormwater strategy for collecting floatables in
our watershed system, protecting our creeks which all lead to the Great South Bay. The problem really is littering”, says Rich Groh, Chief Environmental Analyst for the Town. Save the Great South Bay Creek Defender Todd Shaw, who oversees the Carll’s River, and Janet Marie Soley, Debris Data Collection Specialist, will monitor the station to identify the types and amount of trash collected. The data will be entered into the Ocean Conservancy’s international database via the Clean Swell app for use in policy making decisions. The trap will be maintained with support from the Town’s Department of Public Works who will help empty the device on a regular basis. “Our municipal partners in the Town of Babylon are to be commended for their commitment to protecting the Great South Bay,” said Executive Director Robyn Silvestri. “Every piece of trash picked up is one less piece entering the Bay.”

PSEG Long Island Cautions That Metallic Balloons Can Be Hazardous PSEG Long Island is reminding customers that balloons released into the air can become entangled in overhead electric equipment and cause a host of problems. “Safety is PSEG Long Island’s No. 1 priority. That’s why we’re cautioning customers to please hold onto their metallic balloons,” said John O’Connell, PSEG Long Island’s vice president of Transmission and Distribution Operations. “Though they’re festive, fun and look nice, we want the public to be aware that metallic balloons also conduct electricity. If they get loose and come into
contact with a power line or other electrical equipment, that could lead to power outages, fire and, possibly, injuries.” To mitigate these risks, PSEG Long Island encourages the public to follow these safety guidelines: • Metallic balloons and other decorations should be kept clear of overhead power lines and equipment, and never purposely released into the air. • All balloons with helium should be secured to weights that prevent them from floating away. • To properly dispose of a Mylar balloon, safely
puncture it in several places to release the helium, and discard it in the trash. • NEVER touch a power line. Do not attempt to retrieve a balloon, toy or anything caught in an overhead power line.
