The Village of the start of several projects the construction of bulb- working with GreenmanLindenhurst held a press in the downtown. One outs on South Wellwood Pedersen Inc. and using conference to announce of those projects being Avenue. The Village will be Suffolk County Jumpstart Grant funds to construct several bulb-outs along South Wellwood Avenue. The bulb-outs will improve pedestrian safety and create a more walkable downtown. It was also announced that 30,000 were donated to the downtown businesses by Village resident and businessman, Franklin Cruz. These masks will be distributed for use by employees and customers. Trustee RJ Renna stated, “The funding from Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone will greatly assist with ongoing improvements to our downtown.” Mayor Lavorata noted that, “This is one more step forward in the revitalization of the Village’s downtown. With all the news of the Coronavirus crisis, it would be easy to forget that experts are calling for an active tropical storm and hurricane season. Tropical Storm/Hurricane Season began June 1st and will last until November 30th, but the peak of the season will be in our area throughout September and October. That being said, we do not want to be figuring things out as a major storm bears down on us, and, as such, the Village continues to look for ways to improve and fine-tune our emergency preparedness plans, and we encourage our residents to do the same. We should all prepare for potential severe weather situations like hurricanes, tropical storms, nor’easters, and abnormal high tide ﬂooding events. Here are some important tips to keep in mind for your

planning: • If a hurricane, or another tropical storm, hits and power is interrupted, and with the current pandemic, residents should be prepared to shelter at home. • At minimum, everyone should have on hand: o 3-days of food o 7-days of medication o 3-gallons of drinking water per person o LED ﬂashlights o A battery-powered AM radio. • Make sure to have extra cash on hand if a storm is approaching, and be sure your fuel tank is full. Bank ATMs and gas pumps may not work if electricity goes out. • If you have pets, have a kit for them too, with items like a carrier, medicine, and ample food supplies. • Create a family emergency plan and emergency contact list.

Using Diet and Exercise to Prevent Breast Cancer

Easy Ways to Keep Your Immune System Strong

When it comes to breast cancer risk, some things are beyond a person’s control. Women might not be able to do much in regard to their genetic makeup and family history, each of which can elevate their risk for breast cancer, but many risk factors are within women’s control. A healthy diet and routine exercise may help women reduce their risk of developing breast cancer, while poor lifestyle choices can increase that risk. For example, being overweight is a strong risk factor for breast cancer for women who are 18 and older, advises Stanford Health Care. Even 10 percent weight gain (or 15 pounds on a 150-pound woman) increases breast cancer risk as well as the risk of recurrence. Diet and exercise can play a pivotal role in reducing breast cancer risk, and it’s important for women to understand just how much good healthy diets and routine exercise can do for them in regard to fighting breast cancer. • Stanford Health Care says some studies suggest limiting dietary fats in the diet, particularly those that come from animals, to reduce breast cancer risk. These include butter, full-fat dairy, poultry skin, and fatty meats. Reducing intake of dietary fats, especially animal fats, may protect against diseases sensitive to hormones, like breast cancer. • Data from the Women’s Healthy Eating and Living study suggests that soy consumption from whole foods and soy milk for any breast cancer type is probably safe, despite

public perceptions. Avoid soy supplements and concentrated soy that comes in many soy protein powders until more about their effects is known. • The American Cancer society links alcohol consumption to a higher risk of various cancers, including breast cancer. The more alcohol a person drinks, the higher his or her cancer risk. The ACS recommends no more than one drink per day for women and two for men. A fiveounce glass of wine is considered one drink. • Susan G. Komen® says a high body mass index has been associated with increased risk for postmenopausal breast cancer. Exercise may help reduce risk by altering metabolism, hormones and breast density. • Inﬂammation is an immune system response to injury or illness. However, when inﬂammation is chronic, it can damage DNA and lead to cancer, advises

the National Cancer Institute. Deep marine fish; dark, leafy green vegetables; bright, multicolored vegetables; black teas; and spices like turmeric can help fight or prevent inﬂammation. • The ACS recommends adults get at least 150 minutes of moderateintensity or 75 minutes of vigorous-intensity activity each week (or a combination), preferably spread throughout the week to keep body weight in check. • Stanford Health Care says consumption of high amounts of sugar can increase insulin levels and result in weight gain, each of which can lead to breast cancer. Limit intake of sugary snacks and refined carbohydrates, opting for healthy alternatives such as fruit, vegetables, beans, whole grains, dairy, and soy milk. Diet and exercise is vital to overall health and can help women reduce their risk for breast cancer.

The immune system is a powerful component of the human body. The immune system recognizes when viruses, bacteria and other foreign invaders enter or compromise the body, and then takes action to prevent illnesses from taking over. The average person can help his or her immune system do its job more effectively by making the immune system as strong as it can be. Harvard Medical School says that diet, exercise, age, and psychological stress may affect immune system response. Certain lifestyle choices can promote a strong immune system. • Get adequate sleep. Doctors believe sleep and immunity are closely tied. A study of 164 healthy adults published by the National Institutes of Health found those who slept fewer than six hours each night were more likely to catch a cold than people who slept for more than six hours. Aim for adequate rest each night to keep your body in top form. • Increase your intake of fruits and vegetables. Fruits and vegetables supply the powerhouse antioxidants that are essential for protecting a body against free radicals. Free radicals may play a role in heart disease, cancer and other diseases. Serve fruits and/or vegetables with every meal to ensure you’re getting enough antioxidant-rich foods. • Consume ﬁber and fermented foods. Fiber can help feed the gut microbiome, which is linked to a robust immune system. The microbiome also

may prevent harmful pathogens from entering the body through the digestive tract. Data also suggests that eating more fermented foods can further strengthen and populate healthy bacteria in the gut. • Exercise regularly. Aim for 30 minutes of moderate exercise per day, advises the American Heart Association. Thirty minutes of exercise each day can go a long way toward keeping the body healthy. The U.S. National Library of Medicine says physical activity may help ﬂush bacteria out of the lungs and airways. Exercise causes changes in antibodies and white blood cells. These antibodies and white blood cells circulate rapidly, so they may

detect illnesses earlier than they would if you do not exercise. Body temperature also rises during exercise, which could naturally prevent bacteria from growing. • Try to minimize stress. According to Simply Psychology, when people are stressed, the immune system’s ability to fight off antigens is reduced, making people more susceptible to infections. The stress hormone corticosteroid can suppress the effectiveness of the immune system. Limiting stress through meditation and breathing exercises, or trying to remove stressors from one’s life, may help. A healthy immune system is vital to fending off or recovering from illness.

Hair We Share provides customized wigs made from real hair, free of charge to anyone whose financial means doesn’t allow them to purchase one. This event, A Walk to Remember Scavenger Hunt, will take place in Huntington and you can choose from any of the above dates to participate in it. It is an app-led outdoor scavenger hunt that will allow you to explore Huntington. This organization was formed in 2014 when a woman wanted a wig for her daughter who has Alopecia. She reached out to Manny Roberts Hair Replacement, a wig business owned by Dean Riskin and mentioned that her daughter saw one of their wigs on a TV show, worn by someone else who has Alopecia. She immediately felt a sense of relief, realizing she is not the only person who has this condition. Her mother wanted to do anything she could to get her daughter a wig just like this, hence why she reached out to the business who created it.

According to Breastcancer.org, the following are some habits, behaviors or lifestyle choices that can increase a woman’s risk for breast cancer. • Alcohol consumption: Breastcancer.org notes that researchers have uncovered links between the consumption of alcoholic beverages and hormone-receptorpositive breast cancer. One study found that women who consume three alcoholic beverages per week have a 15 percent higher risk of developing breast cancer than women who don’t drink at all. And while research into the connection is limited, a 2009 study found a link between alcohol consumption and breast cancer recurrence. • Sedentary lifestyle: Exercise consumes and controls blood sugar and limits blood levels

of insulin growth factor. That’s an important connection, as insulin growth factor can affect how breast cells grow and behave. A sedentary lifestyle also can increase a woman’s risk of being obese, which the ABCF notes is a risk factor for breast cancer among postmenopausal women. • Smoking: Smoking has long been linked to cancer, and Breastcancer. org notes that smoking has been linked to a higher risk of breast cancer in younger, premenopausal women. Unchangeable Risk Factors Unfortunately, many risk factors for breast cancer are beyond women’s control. For example, the ABCF notes that roughly two out of three invasive breast cancers occur in women age 55 and older. Women cannot change their ages, but recognizing the link between age and breast cancer risk is important, as such a recognition may compel more women 55 and older to prioritize cancer screening. Gender and family history are two additional unchangeable risk factors for breast cancer. Women are much more likely to get breast cancer than men. In addition, Breastcancer. org notes that between 5 and 10 percent of breast cancers are believed to be caused by abnormal genes that are passed from parent to child. Women are not helpless in the fight against breast cancer. Knowledge of breast cancer, including its various risk factors, is a great weapon against it as women look to reduce their risk of developing the disease.

It Is A Time To be Accommodated Not Accommodating When making funeral arrangements I often hear the grieving family worry about this person or that person. The family worries about how people would find out about the funeral and how they would get to the funeral home in time for the funeral. If they should have visiting one day or two days or no visiting at all. When asked for advice, I recommend the family to do what is best for them. It is the immediate family that must be accommodated by all others. It is not the obligation of the immediate family who has just suffered the loss of their mother or father or wife or husband that need worry about what everybody else wants. It is everybody else’s job to make sure the immediate family has what they need or want. In other words the immediate family should be accommodated by everyone else and not be worrying about accommodating everyone else’s wishes. Under most circumstances there isn’t any place in the world that if a person truly desired to come to the funeral he or she could not get to New York in less than 36 hours. If the family wishes they can delay the service for a day or two but it should be the immediate family’s choice and not delayed at the insistence of others. It is difficult enough to cope with the loss of a loved one without worrying about the needs of everyone else. It is not selfish of the immediate family to only consider their needs but rather it is selfish of others not to consider the needs of the immediate family. After all when all the rest of the world returns to their normal life the immediate family must begin to pick up the pieces to their shattered lives.

Long-Awaited First Days The classrooms have been prepared, the buses are on the road and the sound of laughter has returned to the hallways and playgrounds of the Lindenhurst Union Free School District. Sept. 9 began another school year for the district albeit one with a slightly different feel to it. After six months,

students have returned to their buildings and logged into virtual classrooms to reunite with friends, met new teachers and familiarized themselves with the new safety protocols. As students have been arranged in cohorts, so as to reduce the number of daily attendance, different groups have experienced their first in-

person days of school on different days throughout the week. “This first week back was a great first step toward normalcy,” said Superintendent of Schools Daniel Giordano. “We will continue to assess our program as we move forward in hopes of all being back together again in school.”

McAllister Joins The Lindenhurst Family The Lindenhurst Union Free School District is pleased to welcome Richard McAllister as coordinator of English Language Arts. McAllister began his career as an English teacher at Elmont Memorial High School in the Sewanhaka Central High School District. From there, he went on to serve as an assistant principal at Northport High School where he remained until accepting this new role in Lindenhurst. He holds his Certificate of Advanced Graduate Study in School Building and School District leadership from the College of Saint Rose. Additionally, McAllister has obtained a

RICHARD McALLISTER Master of Arts degree in English literature and a Bachelor of Science degree in adolescent education from St. John’s University. McAllister resides

in Wantagh with his wife, Danielle. They are expecting their first child, a baby boy, later this year. In his free time, he enjoys spending time with loved ones, traveling to new places with family, reading, and relaxing at the beach or on the golf course. “I am thrilled to join the administrative team in Lindenhurst,” said McAllister. “I look forward to partnering with the district’s stakeholders in welcoming our students back to school.” The district is honored to welcome Mr. McAllister and is confident that he will be successful in his new role.
