Lindenhurst Library Bond Referendum, Wednesday October 16, 2019 A new library building is a luxury not a NECESSITY. This will be the second referendum in two years. The voters rejected the referendum for a new library. Perhaps the members of the board and the library director are suffering from amnesia. Two years ago, the school district presented a separate referendum which the voters passed. Currently, the property taxpayers are paying for it and have 13 years left to pay. The village gave a 10 year tax break to a brewery while several roads are in disrepair. The property taxpayers get to pay for two referendums if the library referendum passes. Please vote NO. Social Security recipients may get an increase in 2020 but it will be less than the 2019 increase. Paying for Medicare could be worse. If you are the property taxpayer, do you really want to pay for a new library building? The dictator in Albany requires all vehicles with license plates over ten years old to be replaced with new license plates at $25.00 and an additional $20.00 for use of the same license plate number. If you’re angry, stop by the library on Wednesday, Octoberber 16, 2019 and vote NO. Is the average assessed value of a home 3,500? I don’t think so. Consequently, several property taxpayers will pay more. If the bond referendum passes, I will try to defeat the budget vote in April, 2020. Please vote NO. Legislative Intent The Board of Trustees of the Village of Lindenhurst hereby finds that in order to promote safety and public order within the Village, the use of bicycles must be regulated. The Board of Trustees finds that this new section is reasonably aimed at achieving this and that public health, welfare, and good order and the governance of the Village will be enhanced by enactment of the regulations set forth in this section. §37-1. Applicability of traffic laws. A. Every person riding a bicycle upon a street shall be granted all of the rights and shall be subject to all of the duties applicable to the driver of a vehicle pursuant to the New York State Vehicle and Traffic Law, except those provisions, which by their nature, are not applicable. Every person riding a bicycle upon a sidewalk shall be granted all of the rights and shall be subject to all of the duties applicable to a pedestrian. B. A violation of any provision of Chapter 37, by an operator of a bicycle shall be ticketed using the same procedure as is used for motor vehicle infractions, except that any violation committed while operating a bicycle shall not affect the status of the violator’s motor vehicle operator’s license. When a citation is issued to a bicycle operator, the fact that the violation involves a bicycle shall be clearly indicated on the citation. C. Whenever there is a violation of traffic law by a bicycle operator or a violation by a motorist that endangers a bicycle operator, the court may permit demonstration of successful completion of a court-approved

cycling knowledge course or test in lieu of or in addition to a fine or other penalty. §37-2. Operation on roadways. A. Persons riding bicycles upon a roadway shall ride not more than two abreast in a single lane, except on paths or parts of roadways set aside for the exclusive use of bicycles. B. Every person operating a bicycle upon a roadway shall ride as near to the right side of the roadway as practicable, and with the flow of traffic, obeying all traffic rules applicable to vehicles and exercising due care when passing a standing vehicle or one proceeding in the same direction. C. This section does not require a person operating a bicycle to ride at the edge of the roadway when it is unreasonable or unsafe to do so. Conditions that may require riding away from the edge of the roadway include when necessary to avoid fixed or moving objects, parked or moving vehicles, surface hazards, or if it is otherwise unsafe or impracticable to do so, including if the lane is too narrow for the bicycle and an overtaking vehicle to travel safely side by side within the lane. D. When a bicycle is operated on the roadway, the operator shall give hand signals to other vehicle operators in the vicinity before turning or changing lanes. Such signals shall conform with the motor vehicle laws of New York. The signal shall be made not less than one time but is not required to be continuous. A bicycle operator is not required to make a signal if the bicycle is in a designated turn lane, and a signal shall not be given when the operator’s hands are needed for the safe operation of the bicycle. § 37-3. Reckless or uncontrolled operation. No person shall operate a bicycle: A. Without due regard for the safety and rights of pedestrians and drivers and occupants of all other vehicles, and so as to endanger the life, limb or property of any person while in the lawful use of the streets or sidewalks or any other public

or private property. B. Without exercising reasonable and ordinary control over such bicycle. C. By trick riding or in a weaving or zigzag course, unless such irregular course is necessary for safe operation in compliance with the law. § 37-4. Compliance with traffic signal control devices required. A. Any person operating a bicycle shall obey the instructions of official traffic signals, signs and other control devices applicable to vehicles, unless otherwise directed by a police officer. B. Whenever authorized signs are erected that no right or left turns or U-turns are permitted, no person operating a bicycle shall disobey the direction of any such sign, except where such person dismounts from the bicycle to make any such turn, in which event such person shall then obey the regulations applicable to pedestrians. § 37-5. Emerging from alley or driveway. The operator of a bicycle emerging from an alley, driveway or building shall, upon approaching a sidewalk or the sidewalk area extending across any alley or driveway, yield the right-of-way to all pedestrians approaching on such sidewalk area and upon entering the street shall yield the right-of-way to all vehicles approaching on said street.

Community relations specialist for the Long Island Rail Road, Chrisann Fabio, was recently welcomed to speak to students in grades kindergarten through five at Daniel Street Elementary School in the Lindenhurst Union Free School District. Fabio spoke as a representative of the Operation Lifesaver program which provides age-appropriate railroad safety education to students

across Long Island. During her visit, she shared with younger students the rules of railroad safety with the help of the program’s mascots, Sly Fox and Birdie. Older students explored facts about trains as well as the dangers of trespassing and track safety. “Our goal is to educate students on how to remain safe around trains,” said Fabio. “It is important that when they see tracks, they think train

and exhibit caution. We have seen the movies in which characters are safe walking down the tracks into the tunnel, or the cartoons where someone is climbing to the top of the train car. As adults, we know that certain behaviors on or near a train are inappropriate and dangerous. It is imperative that young people recognize those behaviors as well and avoid them.”

The Charity of the Month for October is: The Cemetry of Lost Souls (lostsoulsli.com) Benefitting Melissa’s Wish It’s hard to believe that October is already here and Halloween is quickly approaching! After The Cemetery of Lost Souls, a grassroots organization ran by a family in Massapequa Park, reached out to me and told me their story, I decided to choose them for the Charity of the Month. Sometimes it’s easy to judge a book by it’s cover. For example, when you see the frightening Haunted House that they create each year, you may not be thinking that there is a deep meaning behind why they do it. Once I discovered this, along with the driving force which pushes them to bring this event back year after year, I knew I had to feature them! In 2008 Christopher and Joann (husband and wife) of Massapequa Park started decorating their yard for Halloween with their children. In 2009 they built their first prop, added some smoke, lights and store bought decorations. That same year they became aware of H.O.L.I., an organization on Long Island that compiles a list of the best decorated home “Haunts”. It became their family’s goal to make it onto that list and in 2011 they achieved that goal. In 2012, their children had the idea of using their “special talents” to help others. Their oldest son thought of making their displays more interactive by adding actors to haunt their elaborate sets and setting up a donation box that people could donate to different charities. Their charity event was officially born and every year since it has grown bigger. Each year this organization gears up to create an elaborate Haunted House on their property, located at 350 Broadway in Massapequa Park. Additionally and more importantly, each year they choose a charity to raise funds for. The best part is, they don’t keep a penny for themselves. Every bit of money raised through this event (admission, donations, sponsorships, etc.) is given to charity. They rely heavily on devoted individuals and community support, as the actors and people who put the haunt on are volunteers and most of

the actors are local students. They have raised a lot of money over the years in donations alone and have donated to charities such as Autism Speaks, The Breast Cancer Research Foundation and Long Island Cares. In 2017, Massapequa Park Mayor, Jeff Provato, even showed up to give support and was given the “Key To The Haunt”! This year they are donating to Melissa’s Wish, a non-profit organization founded with the purpose of providing short term, non-medical financial aid in the form of a grant to caregivers who are assisting those afflicated with a serious illness, injury or end of life event. This year they will bring the community a new interactive experience with the second Lost Souls Walk-Thru haunt, new rooms, new scares and new thrills! Stop by on October 12, 18-19, 25-26, 31 and November 1-2 from 7PM-11:30PM to see what it is all about! Additionally, they are still actively looking for volunteers in the following areas: Digital Marketing, Scare Team Members, Security and on their Bake Team.
