The Charity of The Month for September is:
The West Islip Breast Cancer Coalition
For Long Island, Inc.
The West Islip Breast Cancer Coalition for Long Island, Inc. (WIBCC) is a non-profit grassroots organization that was founded in 1992. They work to eradicate Breast Cancer and gynecological cancers. Their mission is to provide support services to women undergoing treatment and requiring postmastectomy care with their “Lead A Helping Hand” program, and to actively promote cancer and environmental awareness with education, advocacy and outreach throughout the community. To accomplish their mission, they focus on prevention, research, education, services, their Lend a Helping Hand program and awareness. WIBCC has remained open throughout the pandemic and are truly here to serve our community. This coalition serves all of Long Island, not just West Islip.
As like many other non-profit organizations, WIBCC holds various fundraising events throughout the year to gain awareness and collect funds in support of their mission. This September they are part of Stop & Shop’s Community Bag Program. WIBCC will receive a $1 donation every time a $2.50 reusable Community Bag is purchased at 400 Union Blvd in West Islip, unless otherwise directed by the customer through the Giving Tag attached to the bag. Additionally, they are participating in John’s Crazy Socks Giving Back Program, which started September 1st and will run through October 31st. John’s Crazy Socks is a fatherson social enterprise that was inspired by John Lee Cronin, a young man with Down Syndrome and his love of colorful and fun socks, or what he calls his “crazy socks”. John’s Crazy Socks has agreed to donate 10% of their net sales to WIBCC for every pair of socks purchased from their website, www. johnscrazysocks.com, when you enter the
charity code FG-WIBCC20.
Next month they will present Pink Flags of October, a month-long event to honor and remember those affected by Breast Cancer. Hundreds of pink flags will be placed at the entrance of Good Samaritan Hospital. You have the opportunity to purchase a ribbon in honor of or in memory of someone whose life has been affected by Breast Cancer. These ribbons will be tied to the flags and together the flags and ribbons will fly for the entire month of October. On Sunday, September 27 from 12-2PM at The Cancer Institute (111 Beach Drive in West Islip), there will be a ceremony to celebrate this month-long event, which will include health information, light refreshments and more. If you purchase a ribbon, you can attend the event and place the name of whom it is in honor of or in memory of right on the ribbon itself. If you cannot attend, it will be placed for you. If you would simply like to make a donation directly to this coalition, you can securely do so online at www.wibcc.org. Donations are greatly appreciated and are able to be made in memory of or in honor of a loved one. Lastly, if you would like to volunteer, you can! WIBCC relies on the generous support of volunteers in order to fulfill their mission. They are always looking for people to help with programs, raising funds and other tasks. A Generous Donation Restoration Kitchen & Cocktails is one of many new eating establishments which recently set up shop in the Village of Lindenhurst. While their unique blend of scrumptious appetizers, entrees and libations is certainly worthy of regular visits, what truly sets Restoration apart is their commitment to community. When Billy Miller and wife Nicole decided to open a restaurant, they did so with a purpose: to restore faith in humanity, one person at a time. Toward that end, Restoration’s motto - “Be the Good You Want to See in the World” - is accomplished by donating 100% of the net profits to local charities, foundations and families in
need. After learning of the wonderful work that the Kiwanis Club of Lindenhurst does for children in the community, Billy and Nicole met with the club’s board and were convinced that those works and the Kiwanis motto “To Improve the World One Child and One Community at a Time” - was well-suited to Restoration’s purpose. And so in January they selected Lindenhurst Kiwanis as a recipient of their fundraising efforts. Then the world changed. After the shutdown in March due to the coronavirus, Billy, Nicole, and the entire staff at Restoration, worked tirelessly - at first offering
take-out to patrons and then by setting up tables in what was their parking lot so that diners could safely enjoy the Restoration experience. And thankfully, the community responded by supporting Restoration. As a result of and as payback for that support, on Tuesday Billy and Nicole presented the Kiwanis Club of Lindenhurst with a check for $14,262.00 that will be used for years to come to help send children to Kamp Kiwanis in upstate New York for a week of summer fun and adventure. Even in trying times such as these, it’s refreshing to know that we can still “Be the Good You Want to See in the World”.

Town of Babylon Supervisor Rich Schaffer, Deputy Supervisor Tony Martinez and the rest of the Town Board join the Town of Babylon Fire Chiefs Association to welcome other elected officials, first responders and residents to the town’s hometown 9/11 memorial to mark the 19th anniversary of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 that claimed the lives of 48 town residents.
The hometown memorial is located at Overlook Beach, which allowed the town to hold a sociallydistanced service in light of the COVID-19 outbreak. Attendees wore face coverings for the entirety of the event. The service was also live-streamed to the town’s Facebook page for those who could not attend in-person. Supervisor Schaffer spoke about the importance

With regard to home repairs, homeowners may be able to delay some projects until the weather permits or they find room in their budgets. But other areas, including the roof, may demand immediate action. Few homeowners give the roofs of their homes much thought until a problem arises. But learning to recognize potential indicators of roof trouble can help homeowners prevent potentially drastic situations down the road. • Light: Homeowners with attics in their homes can inspect the ceilings inside the attic for signs of holes or leaks. Light peering through the top of the house indicates a hole or leak, as does stains or streaks on the ceiling. • Worn shingles: Shingles should lie flat against the roof, so any
that appear to be buckling or turning up are damaged and in need of repair. A single damaged shingle does not require a full roof replacement, but inspect all the shingles nonetheless. Another indicator of shingle problems can be found when cleaning downspouts or gutters. If the gutters and downspouts contain lots of shingle granules, the roof may soon need to be replaced. • Moss: Moss on a rooftop may give a home character, but that added character is costly. Shady areas of a roof can be susceptible to the growth of moss and fungi because moisture can be trapped in such areas. If possible, remove moss or fungi from a roof with a stiff brush or hire a professional to do the job instead. Moss may come back even after brushing it off, so homeowners should
keep an eye on areas of their roofs that get little sunlight. In addition, trapped moisture can be very harmful to a roof, so it may be wise to exercise caution and have roofs with mold or fungi growths inspected. • Age: Another indicator of roof trouble may be the age of the roof. Even if there are no visible signs of damage, homeowners whose roofs have some years under their belt may want to consider replacing them. Asphalt shingle roofs typically have life expectancies of 20 to 25 years, while roofs installed over existing layers of shingles may need to be replaced after 20 years. Recognizing minor roof damage before it escalates into a larger problem can save homeowners substantial amounts of money.

Setting The Stage To Sell
Your home will sell.There’s no question about that - In today’s market or tomorrow’s, good or bad. However, if you put your home on the market without preparing it for sale, you may have a long wait for an offer or you may not realize your homes Top value. You don’t have to turn your pockets inside out to get it ready to sell. Some outlay may be necessary for painting, for replacing worn woodwork, carpeting. cabinet doors, or for repairing broken fixtures or appliances. There are, however many fix-ups that cost absolutely nothing except a little time and elbow grease. These fix-ups will make all the difference in whether or not your home makes the most of itself. Here are a few tips for getting your home ready to show itself off to your pocketbook’s best advantage:

Spruce up all around the home. Keep lawn and shrubbery trimmed and free of bicycles and other clutter. Keep the garden beds weeded and mulched. Put a flowering pot on the front step and keep it watered and trimmed. Fill potholes in your driveway and tidy up walkways. Clean off your outdoor furniture; remove any rust (or toss out the rusted item). Clear out the garage of everything but cars. If yours has become a twocar attic, throw out the excess. Straighten gutters, the mailbox, the fence - and other things that sag. Fix doorbells, tighten loose door-knobs, and oil squeaking hinges. Repair broken windows and shutters.

If you’ve repainted (preferably in safe neutral tones), add bold splashes of color with your brightest throw pillows, crockery, pictures. 25. Place plants in strategic spots in any room - the bigger the more glamorous, if space permits. 26. Light the whole home, especially dark corners and hallways. 27. Hang mirrors where they will reflect outdoor light - as well as make a room look larger.
