The day was not only the start of a new academic year, but for many in the district, it was the start of a new chapter of their lives. Kindergarten students entered classrooms for the first time, leaving behind the security of their parents. Incoming ninth graders to the Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School caught up with classmates and toured their new building during orientation day. Students gathered in the auditorium and were welcomed by Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School Principal Joseph Agosta during the open house. He spoke about some of the requirements to move to the next grade level each year and encouraged them to take advantage of the total high school experience. Agosta also introduced members of the administration team and class advisers. Afterward, the freshmen received their schedules and were given time to tour the building, find their lockers and reconnect with friends.

The foundation has a committee that meets on a monthly basis to review new applications and they determine the eligibility of the applicants and wish requests. If approved, the foundation will grant the wish as funding and resources become available (if they are not already available). Jackie, a local Long Islander, was nominated to be a wish recipient by her friend at work. Jackie works at Walmart and would walk to work and assist residents at her local nursing home while she wasn’t working. Her friends wanted to make it easier for her to get around. After the wish was received, James Ciervo and Barbara Ransom of the Greater Port Jefferson Chamber of Commerce helped get Jackie a beautiful bicycle. They brought the bicycle to her workplace and the smile on her face was ear to ear! This foundation is presently looking for more wish applicants in the Long Island area. The Twilight Wish Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization whose mission is to honor and enrich the lives of seniors through intergenerational Twilight Wish celebrations. Since the foundation’s founding in 2003, their goal has been to make the world a nicer place to age, one Twilight Wish at a time. When a Twilight Wish is granted, a senior is recognized for all that they have done throughout their lives and is shown that they are appreciated and valued. This organization truly makes a difference in the lives of seniors nationwide. Often the elderly gets overlooked or they simply can’t seem to achieve their goals on their own. This is where Twilight Wish steps in. Although their headquarters are located in Pennsylvania, the foundation has chapters located around the nation. James Ciervo, who devoted much of his life to helping seniors, created their Long Island Chapter 15 years ago. His career was in the senior health care industry for many years and he continues to help seniors through the Twilight Wish Foundation today. The process of applying to be a wish recipient is fairly simple. You can visit their website at www.twilightwish.org and click on the “Wishes” tab followed by “Request A Twilight Wish”. From here you can start the process. Applications can be submitted for yourself or on behalf of someone else. With their backpacks filled to the brim, students spent the first day getting acquainted with their new teachers, rooms and classmates. As other elementary grades settled into their new classes, kindergarten students explored their new buildings for the first time as they toured the school and were introduced to their new teachers.
