1300 Montauk Highway, Lindenhurst Saturdays, September 11, 18 & 25 from 9:00am-2:00pm Look for the Library tent at the Farmer’s Market, where staff will be available to answer questions, hand out final summer club prizes, make and take craft kits, and give away herbs and veggies organically grown in our community library garden. Need help with your device or phone, or want a quick tutorial on how to use Libby, Flipster or other databases? Stop by and a staff member can assist you! We will have computers for public use, fax and scanning equipment, and a copy machine available, in addition to limited seating and tables. Our new and popular materials will be back and ready for borrowing again, although the majority of our collection will remain in storage as work continues in the library building.

In observance of National Preparedness Month, the Library is partnering with Legislator Kevin McCaffrey’s office to host a “Prepare-a-Thon” to raise awareness of the importance of preparing for disasters and emergencies. Learn how to make an emergency supplies kit and create an emergency plan. Walk through various vendors and informational booths geared towards empowering your entire family to be prepared to act quickly in the face of a weather related or other emergency. Before and after school pick-up and drop-off on Lee Avenue is not advised during construction, as the majority of the Library’s parking lots are closed off and the street is filled with construction vehicles, making sight lines difficult. When the Library reopens, our lot will be very limited with parking for patrons using the library. St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital has been closely monitoring the COVID-19 positivity rates, hospitalizations and projected trends for this September across the country to evaluate the safety of hosting an in-person event this September. We are fully committed to the safety and well-being of our pediatric cancer patient families, volunteers, participants, community and staff. We have made the difficult decision to transition the St. Jude Walk/Run - Long Island, NY to a virtual only event. How To Honor First Responders This fall marks the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. The attacks on September 11, 2001 remain the deadliest terror attacks in world history, claiming more than 2,900 lives and causing countless injuries and long-term health problems for tens of thousands of civilians and first responders. The 20th anniversary of 9/11 will no doubt evoke responses that span the emotional spectrum. Sadness may dominate such responses, but the anniversary of 9/11 also is a great time to reflect on the efforts of first responders. First responders played a vital role on 9/11, and many lost their lives and/or suffered long-term health consequences resulting from their selfless efforts to save innocent victims of the attacks. In the two decades since the 9/11 attacks, first responders have continued to make countless sacrifices to ensure their communities are safe and peaceful places to call home. The 20th anniversary of 9/11 is a great time to recognize the efforts of first responders and honor them for all they do.
Administration, 54 percent of active firefighting personnel are volunteers. Many of those volunteer firefighters work for underfunded departments that are in need of financial support. Donating to such departments is a great way to show first responders how much their efforts are appreciated. Donations may be used to purchase new equipment, upgrade existing facilities, provide vital training, and/or improve response times, the latter of which can increase the likelihood that firefighters make it through calls safe and sound.
• Back legislation to support wounded first responders. Many first responders suffer significant mental and physical injuries while on the job. Various nonprofit organizations help wounded first responders who may need to make modifications to their homes or purchase costly equipment to get through their daily lives. But nonprofit organizations cannot go it alone in support of wounded first responders. Citizens can do their part by promoting and voting for local, state and national legislation that makes it easy for wounded first responders to get the help • Donate to local fire departments. they need, when they need it. such legislation, private citizens can utilize social media to promote proposals and other efforts to support wounded first responders. Many 9/11 first responders are still fighting for government-backed support to treat injuries suffered 20 years ago, and a vocal citizenry can be a strong asset in their fight and the fight of countless others in need of help. • Commit to supporting first responders year-round. The 20th anniversary of 9/11 will call attention to the efforts of first responders on that day 20 years ago as well as the countless times since then that these brave men and women have served their communities. But first responders deserve vocal, year-round support. Make a concerted effort to thank policemen, firefighters, EMTs, nurses, and doctors in your community whenever you interact with them, and urge others to follow suit. First responders play a vital role in communities across the globe. The 20th anniversary of 9/11 can serve as a catalyst for communities to express their support for first responders.
The Flight 93 National Memorial At 10:03 a.m. on September 11, 2001, the last of four planes that were hijacked earlier that morning crashed into a field near the town of Shanksville, Pennsylvania. The people behind the 9/11 attacks later claimed the hijackers who commandeered the plane intended to crash it into the U.S. Capitol Building in Washington, D.C., but passengers and crew stormed the cockpit, prompting the hijackers to crash the plane into the field, which is less than 20 minutes’ flying time to Washington, D.C. The efforts of passengers and crew onboard Flight 93 were nothing short of heroic. Though everyone aboard the flight perished in the crash, the attack on the U.S. Capitol was thwarted, saving untold number of lives. All passengers and crew on board Flight 93 were awarded a Congressional Gold Medal on September 11, 2014. The Flight 93 National Memorial is located in Stonycreek Township in Somerset County, Pennsylvania, roughly two miles north of Shanksville. The memorial was opened to family members of the victims on September 10, 2015, and is now open to the public seven days a week, 365 days a year from sunrise to sunset, though visitors
are urged to contact the Memorial in advance due to potential restrictions or closures related to the COVID-19 pandemic. In September 2005, the Flight 93 Advisory Commission, which included family members of the victims as well as design and art professionals and
community and national leaders, chose a design proposal submitted by Paul Murdoch Architects and Nelson Byrd Woltz Architects from among 1,100 entries. The Flight 93 National Memorial includes the Tower of Voices, a 93-foottall musical instrument that holds 40
wind chimes, one to represent each of the 40 passengers and crew members who perished in the crash. The tower is located on an oval concrete plaza that includes two curved concrete benches facing the opening of the tower. Visitors to the Flight 93 National Memorial also can visit the Memorial Plaza. The Memorial Plaza features the Wall of Names, which is made up of 40 white polished marble stones inscribed with the names of the passengers and crew who were aboard Flight 93 on 9/11. The Memorial Plaza extends onequarter mile alongside the area where Flight 93 crashed. Visitors can walk along the Memorial Plaza and view the impact site, including a grove of eastern hemlock trees that were damaged by the crash. A gap in the tree line is still visible and serves as a lasting “scar” of the crash. One seasonal outreach program that HHRM runs is their The Best First Day backpack event! This event was just recently held August 23-27 at Huntington Assembly. The organization partnered with Huntington Assembly, Family Service League, The Junior Welfare League and The Town of Huntington, along with other many organizations, friends and neighbors that donated new school supplies and new backpacks to make this event a wonderful success! 1639 children received a backpack that was filled with grade-specific new school supplies. 600 Family Hygiene Bags containing soap, shampoo, conditioner, deodorant, toothbrushes, toothpaste, etc. were also given out to those in need in conjunction with the backpacks. “We are grateful for those who brought school items and donated monetarily so that we all could purchase large volumes of needed supplies that we ran short of like plastic pocket folders, dry erase markers, earbuds, pencils, pens, notebook paper and of course backpacks,” said Rev. Kimberly Gaines-Gambino. “We are grateful for over 60 volunteers that helped through the week packing tirelessly and

Pinelawn Memorial Park and Arboretum, known for its exceptionally beautiful grounds and worldclass arboreta, hosted its first Lantern Lighting Celebration for families to honor deceased loved ones. The celebration, which included two events on Saturday, August 21 and Tuesday, August 24, were held for families to remain connected to loved ones after they have passed. Invited as a guest speaker at the celebration was Reverend Lamonte S. Granby, Pastor of the First Baptist Church in Bronxville. Reverend Granby, who recently spoke at Pinelawn’s Spring Candlelight Remembrance Vigil, shared his thoughts on carrying those we love in our hearts. “It’s very important for families to continue to feel connected with their loved ones, even after they pass,”
said Kristyn Hovanec, Marketing Manager, Pinelawn. “Today, people tend to live very hectic lives, so we are happy to be able to host events so that families can take a pause to reconnect and honor those they’ve lost.” During the events, attended by over 400 people, guests received complimentary floating lanterns which they personalized and decorated, and then released within Pinelawn’s Rose Garden Fountain as their loved one’s name was read aloud under the beauty of string lights and the soothing sounds of a live acoustic guitar and violin duo. Guests were also treated to food and invited to walk among the park’s vibrant rose garden labyrinth. Pinelawn events are offered free of charge to its families and the public.

Performances begin Friday, September 17th for a limited engagement through Sunday afternoon, October 24th at The Argyle Theatre (34 West Main Street, Babylon, Long Island). Cabaret is presented through special arrangement with Concord Theatricals. Directed by Evan Pappas, with choreography by Sara Brians and music direction by Jonathan Brenner, the cast will feature Dana Costello as Sally Bowles, Jon Peterson as The Emcee, and Andy Tighe as Cliff Bradshaw, with Fred Frabotta as Herr Schultz, Brian Owen as Ernst Ludwig, Suzanne Grodner as Fräulein Schneider, and Lilly Tobin as Fräulein Kost, as well as Alexis Semevolos and Conor Stepnowski. Mark and Dylan Perlman, Argyle Managing Partners, shared “We are thrilled to reopen The Argyle’s theatrical season and close out The Argyle’s second season with the multiple Tony award winning classic Cabaret.” They went on to say, “Come join us at the Kit Kat Club in Berlin in 1931 where patrons search for escape while the seeds of intolerance are fomenting. Be captivated in a time and place where nothing is certain except for one’s dreams.” In a Berlin nightclub, as the 1920’s draws to a close, a garish Master of Ceremonies welcomes the audience and assures them they will forget all their troubles at the Cabaret. With the Emcee’s bawdy songs as wry commentary, Cabaret explores the dark, heady, and tumultuous life of Berlin’s natives and expatriates as Germany slowly yields to the emerging Third Reich. Cliff Bradsaw, a young American writer newly arrived in Berlin, is immediately taken by English singer Sally Bowles. Meanwhile, Fräulein Schneider, proprietor of Cliff and Sally’s boarding house, tentatively begins a romance with Herr Schultz, a mild-mannered fruit seller who happens to be Jewish. First presented in 1966, the ground-breaking musical Cabaret won an impressive 8 Tony Awards, including Best Musical, which then culminated into a smashing Oscar Winning film in 1972 winning 8 Oscars. The 9/11 Memorial Among the more indelible images to emerge on September 11, 2001 was the sight of two planes crashing into the North and South Towers of the World Trade Center. Still photos and video footage of those planes flying into the Twin Towers were the first images of the attacks many Americans saw, and no one who watched events unfold that morning will ever forget those images. Though both the North and South Towers fell on that day, today the site where each tower once stood is a serene retreat in the bustling lower Manhattan neighborhood that was shaken to its core on the day of the attacks. The 9/11 Memorial was designed by architect Michael Arad and landscape architect Peter Walker. The 9/11 Memorial and Museum notes that Arad and Walker’s proposal was chosen in a design competition that featured 5,201 submissions from 63 countries. The 9/11 Memorial is located on the western side of the formal World Trade Center where the Twin Towers once stood. Two enormous reflecting pools are part of the Memorial Plaza, which is where the North and South Towers once stood. The pools feature the two largest man-made waterfalls in North America. Around the edges of the pools, the names of people who were killed in the 9/11 attacks in New York, the Pentagon, on Flight 93, and in the 1993 bombing at the World Trade Center are etched in bronze. In recognition of the crash sites, 400 swamp white oak trees were selected from nurseries located in New York, Pennsylvania and near Washington, D.C. These trees are located throughout the Memorial Plaza, providing a peaceful respite separate from the surrounding city. The Memorial Plaza also includes one Callery pear tree. That tree was discovered at Ground Zero weeks after the attacks and it was severely damaged. The tree, now known as the Survivor Tree, was nursed back to health by members of the New York City Parks and Recreation Department and returned to the World Trade Center site in 2010, where it still stands as an enduring symbol of resilience and perseverance. The Pentagon Memorial
At 9:37 a.m. on September 11, 2001, five hijackers crashed American Airlines Flight 77 into the Pentagon in Arlington County, Virginia. All 53 passengers and six crew members perished in the crash, and an additional 125 military and civilian personnel on the ground were killed in the fire caused by the crash. The hijacking of Flight 77 was part of the broader attack on 9/11, which remains the deadliest terrorist attack in world history. The Pentagon Memorial was created to honor the 184 people whose lives were lost at the Pentagon on 9/11, as well as their families and all those who sacrifice to protect and preserve the freedom of Americans. The design of the Pentagon Memorial was developed by architects Julie Beckman and Keith Kaseman. Their
design was chosen from 1,100 submissions. The Pentagon Memorial sits on two acres of land just outside where Flight 77 struck the building. The memorial includes 184 benches that are dedicated to each of the victims. The benches are organized in a timeline of their ages, stretching from the youngest victim, 3-yearDana Falkenberg, to the oldest, 71-year-old John Yamnicky. Each bench is engraved with a victim’s name and arches over a shallow reflecting pool of water, lit from below. The benches for the passengers who were aboard the plane at the time of the crash are positioned so visitors will face the sky when reading the victim’s name. The benches dedicated to the victims who were inside the building are positioned so their names and the Pentagon are in the
same view. A curved wall known as the Age Wall also is a significant part of the memorial. The wall increases in height from 3 inches to 71 inches to represent the ages of the victims. Eighty-five paperbark maple trees were clustered throughout the memorial, and these trees feature foliage that changes to orange and red each fall. The trees will eventually grow to 30 feet, providing a canopy of shade over the memorial. The Pentagon Memorial is free and open seven days a week year-round, though visitors are urged to contact the Memorial in advance due to potential restrictions or closures related to the COVID-19 pandemic. Donating Blood Donating blood is a selfless act that saves lives. Blood donors may recognize the vital role they play in patient care, but many may wonder if it’s safe to donate blood during the pandemic. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, it is safe for anyone who is well to donate blood. That even goes for people who are social distancing due to COVID-19. The CDC has recommended various safety measures to ensure the safety of donors and donation center volunteers and staff members. Such measures include spacing
donor chairs at least six feet apart and encouraging donors to make donation appointments ahead of time. Appointments can ensure donors are not spending more time at the donation center than is absolutely necessary, reducing the likelihood that they have contact with someone who may have COVID-19 but not know it. The Red Cross notes it has instituted additional safety protocols, such as laundering blankets used by donors after each use and requiring all donors and staff to wear face coverings or masks during the donation process.

September 11, 2001, was a tragic day in American history. On that day, nearly 3,000 innocent lives were lost due to the terrorist attacks in New York City and Washington, D.C. as well as in rural Pennsylvania, where another plane en route for more destruction crash-landed. The indelible images of the World Trade Center collapsing in flames with crowds running for safety, as well as the ensuing visions of heroes and citizens working together, have created a lasting impression. While buildings have been repaired and new sites erected in the wake of the attacks, there are many ways to continue to honor the fallen. Patriot Day, which takes place each year on September 11 to honor those who lost their lives in the 9-11 attacks, is one such example. The following are a handful of ways that people can honor 9-11 victims and their families.

The terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 were perpetrated on American soil and in American airspace, but the tragedy that unfolded on 9/11 affected countries across the globe. The attacks on 9/11 claimed the lives of citizens of 78 countries. People around the world mourned those who perished in the attacks, and various world leaders made comments that reflected the global impact of the senseless acts of violence that were perpetrated on 9/11. The comments from then-German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder reflect how shaken the world was in the aftermath of the attacks. “They were not only attacks on the people in the United States, our friends in America,” Schroeder said, “but also against the entire civilized world, against our own freedom, against our own values, values which we share with the American people.”

The Village of Lindenhurst joined members of the Holy Family Ukrainian Catholic Church on August 24th to celebrate the 30th Anniversary of Ukraine’s declaration of independence from the
Soviet Union. Members of the church, dressed in traditional Ukrainian clothing, gathered in front of Village Hall to sing songs and raise the Ukraine national flag alongside the U.S. flag. Trustee Joan M. Masterson
presented Reverend Olvian N. Popovici with a proclamation affirming Lindenhurst’s commitment to Ukraine’s rightful role in the world community for free nations.

Each September 11, communities across the United States commemorate the lives lost during the 2001 terrorist attacks that took place on American soil. On September 11, 2001, four commercial airplanes were hijacked and sent to various targets in the United States. Two planes crashed into the towers of the World Trade Center in New York City, one plane crashed into the U.S. Pentagon Building near Washington, D.C., and a fourth plane was intercepted from the hijackers and crash-landed in rural Pennsylvania. In the immediate aftermath of the attacks, President George W. Bush declared Friday, September 14, 2001 as a National Day of Prayer and Remembrance for the Victims of the terrorist attacks. But many people felt there should be an annual event dedicated to preserving the memory of the victims and the heroism of the first responders. A bill to make September 11 a national day of mourning was introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives on October 25, 2001. The bill passed the Senate unanimously. On September 11, 2002, the country recognized the first Patriot Day. On this day, the U.S. flag is flown at half-mast. In addition, a moment of silence beginning at 8:46 a.m. is observed to correspond with the attacks. While not a federal holiday — schools and businesses remain open — memorial ceremonies are held for the 2,977 victims, including an annual reading of names of the people who lost their lives.
