Long Island Educational Leaders Gather to Celebrate SCOPE Long Island’s public school educational leaders congregated at Oakdale’s Bourne Mansion on August 9th for SCOPE Education Service’s 34th annual Dinner Meeting for superintendents and school board members. The event served as a networking opportunity for new and returning superintendents and board of education trustees and other education system professionals. SCOPE provides a vast array of school district services, such as before and after-school child care programs, school enrichment programs and professional development. SCOPE Executive Director George L. Duffy told those in attendance that their work is vital and urged them to utilize and benefit from the many programs and services SCOPE provides. He also introduced all newly installed school

board members and superintendents and wished them success in their new positions. Henry Grishman, president of SCOPE’s board of directors, gave valuable advice to the organization’s new guests. He said, “Leave your school district in far better shape than you found it.” Speakers included Roger Tilles, who serves as Long Island’s representative on the New York State Board of Regents, and New York State Commissioner of Education MaryEllen Elia. Both provided updates on education policy changes, such as state assessments, graduation requirements and teacher evaluations. Regent Tilles said he is examining ways to create opportunities for teacher advancement and noted that while many Long Island districts are receiving national accolades, other districts are struggling. “We have to

remember that those kids are our kids,” Regent Tilles said. “We cannot separate districts doing well from those that aren’t. The equity issue needs to be brought to the forefront.” Commissioner Elia

Acknowledgements I have been putting this off for quite some time. This “final step,” if you will, penning my last column for South Bay.

I told myself I would take my time with this one, write it well in advance of deadline, try to encapsulate everything in one epic, closing chapter. And yet, here I sit – 11:30 p.m. on the eve of my second to last day of work, staring at a mostly blank template as countless thoughts swirl in my brain. While my last three columns have been vignettes of one sort or another – from birthday beginnings and numeric significance, to desktop mementos and the memories associated with them, to a flashback of my origins within the pages of the old Lindy hometown weekly – this one, well, this one leaves me at a bit of a loss for words. My career, this portion of it, has been largely defined by my ability to transcribe a feeling on paper, to relate to readers from all walks of life by telling stories – of my life, of my surroundings and my observations of the people within them. Always, though, the idea was to find a common thread, a unifying theme. Change. It is the one constant. A perfect theme for this transitional transcript, don’t you think? Over the last several weeks, I have received countless letters from fans, family, friends – even a few detractors – most of whom were avid followers of my writing, all of whom wanted to take the opportunity to wish me well on the next phase of my journey. There were even a few phone calls from those

wishing to speak to me, to tell me how much of an impact I had made on their lives, how deeply a particular column had resonated.

Equity First Foundation

Equity First Foundation is a 501c3 nonprofit organization located here on Long Island. Rhonda Klch started this foundation with the mission to offer services, resources and programs to consumers and small businesses that are facing financial distress. Although the details of financial markets may not be necessary for everyone, a good understanding of everyday finances is needed to ensure your home, bank account and additional assets are protected as you go about your life. This nonprofit is guided by a board of experts from the Long Island business community. They strive to educate the community so people can make financial decisions with knowledge and confidence. The mantra of this foundation is “Learn today to choose wisely tomorrow!” This organization holds hands-on workshops, where participants will be given course material, handouts and goals to accomplish. Some people they help through these workshops are those in women’s shelters, homeless shelters, veteran homes, at-risk communities, drug rehabilitation centers, senior centers and more.

As a way to benefit and honor certain individuals, this nonprofit holds many events throughout the year. Some of these events include their Dancing for a Cure event, which raises awareness and research for individuals who have or have had cancer; their Holiday Dream Mission, which assists families in financial distress during the holiday season; their Military Saves Week, which is geared toward assisting military members financially; and their Angel Awards, which honors women of Long Island who have created an impact in the areas of community, volunteer, philanthropy and business development! Equity First Foundation is available to provide educational presentations on an array of topics such as the importance of credit awareness, budgeting and mortgage modification. Businesses, civic groups, community centers and other groups can host seminars or workshops for their employees, members, the communityat-large, etc. If you are interested in scheduling a program, the opportunity is available! Looking to volunteer? Equity First Foundation is in need of volunteers to coordinate events and tradeshows, assist with office work, organize fundraisers and, lastly, to help with grant writing and research. Island members of the 106th that were killed in action, including Major Andreas O’Keeffe, Master Sergeant Christopher Raguso, Technical Sergeant Dashan Briggs, and Major Christopher Zanetis. Additionally, in honor of their memory, County Executive Bellone will be running with active duty members of the 106th Rescue Wing. Members of the 106th will be participating in both the full marathon and the relay race to honor their fallen airmen. This year’s race will also feature a County Executive’s Cup, which is a new trophy that active duty military personnel who participate in the Full Marathon are eligible for. The trophy will be awarded to whichever Military Branch finishes with the top score overall and will have their division name engraved into it. The winners will then be able to take the trophy back to their base until next year’s race. In order to participate, there must be a minimum of five people per branch, and they must be registered for the full marathon. Scoring will be calculated by adding the placement numbers of each runner together, and for each additional runner that crosses the finish line after the first five initial runners, five points will be deducted, with a maximum deduction of 25 points. The team with the lowest score will be awarded the County Executive’s Cup. The trophy has been generously donated by the Ronayne Family.

All four races begin and end in vibrant downtown Patchogue. The marathon course travels through numerous other scenic downtowns on the south shore as well, which are Blue Point, Bayport, Sayville, Oakdale, and Great River. The full marathon course will turn around in Heckscher State Park before entering the scenic Bayard Cutting Arboretum in Great River. The half marathon turns around on the former St. John’s University campus (now Amity Education Group campus). After turning around in their respective locations, both the full and half marathons travel back down Montauk Highway to their starting point in Patchogue. The 5K will travel on Montauk Highway to Blue Point before turning around. In addition to the races being held, the FreedomFest will begin at 9:00 a.m., shortly after the first 5k runners finish and just before the first Half Marathoners will finish. The event will feature three stages of live musical entertainment and include more than 40 vendors that will highlight local craft breweries, award winning wines, and local food and produce. The street festival will include many familyfriendly events, including pumpkin painting, lawn games and other fun activities. Suffolk County Legislator Susan A. Berland said, “The Suffolk County Marathon has become a fixture in our community. The passion exhibited by those who run and those

who sponsor runners is emblematic of the wide spread support for our County’s most brave and selfless, our veterans. As chair of the Legislature’s Veterans Committee, I participated in the review and awarding of the grants from the proceeds of the marathon. The benefits our Suffolk County veterans will receive from these proceeds will go a long way to serve their needs. Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone today announced several exciting changes ahead of the Catholic Health Services 4th Annual Suffolk County Marathon, Half Marathon, 5K and Relay Race, which will be held on Sunday, October 28th, 2018 in Patchogue. The changes for this year’s marathon include the event being dedicated to the members of the Air National Guard’s 106th Rescue Wing and the addition of the County Executive’s Cup. “Every year, the Suffolk County Marathon allows us to raise money to help the tens of thousands of veterans who call Suffolk County home,” said Suffolk County Executive Bellone. “This year we were able to add new features for our runners, including dedicating the race to the 106th Rescue Wing, who faced a tremendous loss earlier this year. I encourage everyone to come out to the races, whether you are running or enjoying FreedomFest, to show your support for our veterans.” In March, seven members of the 106th Rescue Wing of the New York Air National Guard in Westhampton Beach were killed when a U.S. helicopter crashed in Iraq; four of whom were from Long Island. In honor of the service members that were lost, this year’s race will be dedicated to the brave members of the Air National Guard’s 106th Rescue Wing. At the Copiague School District’s August 14th Board of Education meeting, the board appointed two new elementary school assistant principals, effective Auguse 20th. Jean Ann Crespo will split her time as assistant principal of Great Neck Road and Deauville Gardens East elementary schools. She is replacing Janine Proulx who will serve as assistant principal of Susan E. Wiley Elementary School. Nicole Waring will serve the dual role of assistant principal at Deauville Gardens West Elementary and district-

Brook University. A member of the Copiague School District since 2003, Proulx most recently worked as the assistant principal of Deauville Gardens East and Great Neck Road elementary schools. She holds a bachelor’s degree in elementary education

Copiague School District welcomed thirty-one new faculty members and introduced them to the district and community during a two-day orientation on August 27th and 28th in the Copiague Middle School library. Copiague Board of Education President Laura Gavey urged new staff members to work together with administrators and colleagues to help provide the best education for the district’s students. Deauville Gardens East Elementary School. Kelly Urraro, director of technology, presented an overview of technology tools available in the district. During presentations on the second day, new staff members heard from district principals on setting the stage for success. They also learned about the culture of the Copiague School District and how to create a learning environment for English language learners. At the conclusion of the orientation, staff members spent time with classroom teachers discussing best practices at their respective buildings.

Babylon Beach Blast Town of Babylon Supervisor Rich Schaffer, Deputy Supervisor Tony Martinez and the rest of the Town Board invited residents to Overlook Beach on Saturday, August 20th for the Town’s annual Beach Blast. The event featured live music, raffles for charity, rides, games and even an ice creameating contest.

Beachgoers lined Overlook for a latesummer visit to the ocean and pitched tents, stuck umbrellas in the sand and of course took a swim in the water. The Town of Babylon lifeguard staff helped keep everyone safe while enjoying the waves. Over twenty children competed in this year’s ice-cream eating contest

as they were cheered on by friends, family and other residents. Winners were awarded by age group. After dark, the festivities concluded with a fireworks display, a staple of the Beach Blast. Residents looked up and enjoyed the colorful display, which served as a proper sendoff to the 2018 summer season.

The USDA reported that men and women who drank black tea for three weeks reduced their total and bad

cholesterol (LDL) levels by an average of 7.5 percent. Researchers concluded that drinking tea may reduce the

risk of coronary heart disease. Antioxidants called flavonoids, found in both green and black teas, are thought to

be potent weapons in the fight against heart disease. That news may be especially important

for women, given that heart disease kills more women than all forms of cancer combined including breast cancer.

About the Suffolk County Veterans Service Agency The Suffolk County Veterans Service Agency is dedicated to ensuring that all veterans, both peacetime and wartime, receive the maximum amount of support, services and benefits they are due in the shortest amount of time. The Suffolk County VSA handles claims for benefits; compensation, health care, pension, housing, employment, education, burial benefits and a variety of other services.
