Back To School How School Shopping Has Changed In The Pandemic Era Back to school shopping sales have long been indicators that the summer vacation season is coming to a close. Students and their parents may visit area stores or browse online looking for items to make the coming school year a success. Those lists have looked similar for decades, but shopping for school supplies in the pandemic era may prove to be a unique experience.

enrolled in virtual learning. Back to school shoppers may purchase less clothing and focus more on tech items, among others. • Traditional supplies become less necessary: In 2020, Deloitte forecasted that a shift in preferences and intentions would result in parents buying fewer traditional supplies, such as notebooks and office supplies, as they chose to invest in digital resources to supplement children’s education. That shift likely will continue into this school year.

Though hundreds of millions of adults and adolescents have now been vaccinated against COVID-19, there figures to be some lingering effects of the pandemic during the upcoming school year. That could affect which school supplies families buy in the weeks to come. Here’s a look at some of the latest trends. • A shift from physical stores: According to data from IBM’s U.S. Retail Index, the pandemic has accelerated a shift away from physical stores to digital shopping by about five years. It’s likely that school shoppers will turn to the internet for their supplies, which means local brick and mortar shops should increase their web presence and digital shopping capabilities to reach online shoppers. • Reassessment of what’s essential: The pandemic This includes omnichannel fulfillment, such as buy may have changed which items consumers consider online and pickup in store (BOPIS) options. essential. For example, clothing became less significant as a greater number of students were

• Support for local retailers: Community spirit grew in the early days of the pandemic and continues now. Many people prefer to shop in locally owned stores. Eighty percent of customers surveyed feel more or as connected to their communities, according to the business industry consultant company Accenture. • Customers are trying new brands and products: Shoppers are trying new products out of curiosity as well as necessity. Back to school shopping may include novel brands and other items that may not have been readily purchased in years past. Back to school shopping may continue to look a bit different than in previous years, spawning trends that may ultimately become the new normal.

BARRIER BEACH CIVIC HOLDS SUMMER MEETING - On the morning of Saturday July 17th, the Barrier Beach Civic Association held their annual summer meeting and barbecue in Oak Beach. The meeting was the first the Association, led by President Jed Meade, was the first since the winter of 2020. Suffolk County Legislator Kevin McCaffrey joined Town of Babylon Supervisor Rich Schaffer, Deputy Supervisor Antonio Martinez, and representative of State Senator Phil Boyle, Gordon Canary, to discuss a number of concerns of the Association - including water and other utility services, public safety, and the use of the Association’s Community Center. Ronald Kennedy, a NYPD officer and Lindenhurst High School Class of 2013 graduate, was recently celebrated as a hero for his quick thinking which ultimately resulted in a life saved. In early July, Kennedy was responding to a stabbing in Harlem. His experience and previous training as a first responder, fireman, ENT and an NYPD officer taught him that air entering the puncture could have collapsed the victim’s lung. Kennedy called to an onlooker to go into the store behind them and get a bag of potato chips and duct tape, which he promptly used to seal the puncture, stopping the bleeding and allowing enough time for the ambulance to arrive and switch out the seal. The Lindenhurst School District thanks Officer Kennedy for his heroism and for making his community proud.

How To Support Students Interested In The Arts

Schools are diverse communities in which people from all walks of life gather to teach, learn and pursue an assortment of interests and passions. Students are perhaps the best reflection of that diversity, as even small schools are home to young people who excel in sports, music, theatre, and of course, academics. Many young people harbor a strong interest in the arts, which can provide some surprising benefits. For example, the National Endowment for the Arts reports that students with high arts participation and low socioeconomic status have a 4 percent dropout rate. That’s five times lower than their low socioeconomic status peers. In addition, a report from the Rice Kinder Institute for Urban Research found that arts education experiences reduce the proportion of students in school receiving disciplinary infractions by 3.6 percent. Despite the myriad benefits of participation in arts education, which can include improved

performance in the classroom, Americans for the Arts notes that not all students have access to art-based educational experiences. Parents of students who are interested in the arts can try various approaches to nurture those interests. • Support school-based arts education programs. Funding for arts programs is perpetually in jeopardy. Each state and school district is different, but a 2013 report from the National Association of State Boards of Education found that federal funding for arts and humanities programs totaled roughly $250 million a year, while the National Science Foundation received around $5 billion annually. Arts and sciences are both important, and parents can support legislation that directs more federal funding for the arts while urging local legislators to direct more money to arts education. • Make art a part of life at home. Americans for the Arts recommends that parents make the arts part of life at home.

Participating alongside children as they sing, dance, draw, play music or pursue other artsbased interests is a great way to incorporate the arts into home life while showing kids how fun the arts can be.

Ales By The Rails Returns On Saturday, July 24th, the Lindenhurst Chamber of Commerce hosted their annual Ales by the Rails event along Hoffman Avenue. The occasion

highlights the wide array of ales and cocktails that come from local Lindenhurst businesses. Participating locations included Sand City

Brewing Co., Bakuto, Flag Beverage, 27A Brewing Company, Hermanas Kitchen and Cocktails, Belfast Gastropub, and many more!

ALES BY THE RALES EVENT - Suffolk County Legislator Kevin McCaffrey joins Lindenhurst Mayor Mike Lavorata, Trustee RJ Renna, and the crew of Sand City Brewing Co. during the Ales by the Rales event hosted by the Lindenhurst Chamber of Commerce.

• Research local performing arts schools. Children who exhibit an especially strong interest in the arts may benefit from enrolling in a school that specializes in performing arts. Such schools may be open to kids as young as five and extend all the way through high school. Some performing arts schools require prospective students to audition or apply. Arts high schools still offer instruction in core academic subjects, but parents should explore each school’s curriculum before deciding if a given school is right for their children. Arts education can have a profound impact on the life of a young person. There are many ways for parents to nurture and encourage their children’s interest in the arts.

Back To School How Volunteering Benefits Students

Volunteering

can

• Volunteering can get a foot in the door. The National Association of Colleges and Employers reports that employers expect to hire 7.2 percent more new college graduates from the class of 2021 than they did from the class of 2020. That’s encouraging news, but recent graduates will still face stiff competition as they look for their first job. Volunteering with an organization in their field can be a great way for current students and recent graduates to get their foot in the door. Even if a volunteering opportunity does not

ultimately lead to a job offer, the experience students gain can help them stand out in a crowded pool of job applicants down the road.

of undergraduates in associate’s and bachelor’s degree programs who had declared majors changed their majors at least once within three years of their initial enrollment. The same report noted that roughly one in 10 changed majors more than once. Those statistics suggest that many students are uncertain about what they want to study at the onset of their college careers. Volunteering before and during college can help students explore their interests and see where their skills are applicable. They can then rely on that experience as they choose • Volunteering can help a major. students find a career • Volunteering expands path. The study found that, when compared to those who did not volunteer, people who had volunteered in the previous 12 months were more satisfied with their lives and gave their overall health higher ratings.

Volunteering is often seen through the lens of how volunteers help to improve their communities. Though there’s no denying the valuable role volunteers play in strengthening their communities, it’s worth noting just how much volunteers can benefit from donating their time and effort to worthy causes.

Back To School Tips For Dorm Room And Campus Safety

Life on a college campus can be exciting, especially for freshmen enjoying their first taste of life away from home. As exciting as campus life can be, it also can be a bit nervewracking for students who have never before had to fend for themselves. Administrators and security personnel work to make school environments as safe as possible, but incidents can happen on any campus. A recent report from Campus Safety and Security, there were 38,100 reported criminal offenses, including burglary and identity theft, on college campuses in the United States in 2017.

stairwells are common places for assailants to target victims. If you ever feel uncomfortable, trust your instincts and err on the side of caution.

• Hide or lock up valuables. You never know what may catch the eye of a thief. Devices and cash are near the top of lists of most commonly stolen possessions, but a desperate student may steal notes or even expensive textbooks if he or she is struggling. Always close doors and lock dorm rooms when leaving. Keep valuables out of sight at school. Consider buying a dorm room safe and lock your locker at all times. • Prepare for emergencies. Research the school’s policies on emergency preparedness. Some have text alert systems for emergency situations like adverse weather conditions, while others have clear guidelines on what students should do

• Install window alarms. Many retailers sell batteryoperated window alarms that can be adhered to windows. The alarms will activate if the window is opened or the glass breaks. These alarms can provide extra security even if your dorm room isn’t on the ground floor.

if they feel threatened in any way. Participate in fire drills and learn the nearest exits and protocols for emergency evacuations.

ride in a safe place, and try to avoid riding alone. • Maintain personal health. Be sure to visit the doctor and stay current on necessary vaccinations, such as the one for meningococcal disease. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says the risk for meningococcal disease in college students is slightly higher than the risk in other teens and young adults who are not attending college. Other communicative diseases can spread more easily on campus as well. Campus and dorm safety is multifaceted. Informed students can reduce their risk of being involved in accidents or being targeted by criminals.

Take Back Day Drive-Up Event! August 31st is International Overdose Awareness Day. After making progress to reduce preventable deaths, overdose rates are climbing again. The only thing worse than a death is a preventable one! Studies show that a majority of misused prescription drugs were obtained from family and friends, often from the home medicine cabinet. Be a part of the solution; help make our neighborhoods safer and more protective. Take Back Day events provide an opportunity for Americans to prevent drug addiction and overdose deaths. BABYLON VILLAGE ARTS COUNCIL RECOGNIZES POETS - On the evening of August 5th, Suffolk County Legislator Kevin McCaffrey met with the Babylon Village Arts Council and Suffolk County Poet Laureate Barbara Southard at the Babylon Gazebo across from Argyle Lake to recognize the winners of the Council’s Poetry Contest. When It’s Time To Call In A Tutor

How Students Can Transition To Life On A College Campus

23

Back To School

Busy schedules, hybrid learning and demanding coursework have affected students’ academic performance over the last year-plus. The months since a pandemic was declared in March of 2020 have been unlike any other, and confronting the academic challenges of the pandemic may have adversely affected some students’ grades.

Failing grades are not necessarily the most notable indicator that students can benefit from the services of a tutor. The Princeton Review says 25 percent of high school students say homework is their biggest source of stress, and homework progress can help parents determine if it’s time to call in a tutor. Students who find their homework is taking too long, particularly double or triple the amount of time it once required, may need some extra help. Here are some additional indicators that a tutor may be needed.

• Declining test scores: Some students are simply poor test takers, but a gradual or sudden decline in test scores may indicate students are having trouble mastering material. Teachers can pinpoint if certain concepts are overly challenging to students and notify parents if there are any problem areas.

community. The Health, Counseling and Disability Access Services at the University of MissouriSt. Louis urges students to take advantage of opportunities to engage in their new communities as early as possible. The HCDAS notes that firstyear experiences are designed to help students connect with their new life on campus and make new friends. All incoming freshmen are facing the same set of unique circumstances as the 202122 school year begins. That includes the adjustment from remote learning with limited social contact with peers to a return to more traditional academic and social settings. Navigating that transition alongside Some students may other incoming freshmen be a little anxious as can make it a little easier they prepare to return to handle. to campus this fall. The shift to remote learning and shortened school days was difficult for many families, forcing students to adapt to virtual school on the fly as their parents adjusted to working from home full-time while doing their best to keep kids engaged in their studies and occupied when school let out each day. Given those challenges, it’s no wonder so many families are looking forward to what figures to be a more normal school year in 2021-22, but that return will pose its own unique challenges as well.

on campus. Parents also can look into on-campus resources designed to help students readjust to being back among their peers. Knowing where to go for help should students need it can ensure any issues that arise are addressed promptly. • Encourage students to share their concerns. Opening up about any concerns they may have can help students as they emerge from the pandemic. Many parents were concerned about returning to the office in person, and they can share those concerns and the ultimate outcomes of their returns with students concerned about moving onto a college campus. Parents are urged to periodically check in with college students about any anxieties they may have about being on campus. Returning to full-time, in-person learning after the pandemic may be especially challenging for incoming college freshmen. A recent report from the Fairfax County Public Schools Office of Research and Strategic Improvement in Virginia found the number of middle and high school students with two or more failing marks increased by 83 percent in the first quarter of the 2020-2021 school year compared to the year prior, but students’ grades may slide or they may find certain school work overly challenging even in normal years. Since many parents have not seen a periodic table or had to solve high school math problems in decades, tutors may be just what students need to regain their academic footing.

Known As One Of The Greatest And Safest Defenders Of Plant Life, Community Releases Over 100,000 Ladybugs Into The Environment! Pinelawn Memorial Park and Arboretum, known for its exceptionally beautiful grounds and world-class arboreta, hosted its 4th Annual Ladybug Release for hundreds of Long Island community residents. The three events, which took place on Saturday, August 7 and Sunday, August 8, were designed to teach Long Islanders of all ages about the great value of Ladybugs to the environment. “One of the most beloved insects known for their beauty and as a bearer of good fortune, ladybugs are also one of nature’s greatest defenders of plant life,” said Fred Hoffmann, Pinelawn’s Grounds Supervisor. “Pinelawn’s 500-acre property, which includes countless flowering gardens, botanicals, plants and arboreta, notably benefit from our annual Ladybug Release, which provides a much safer option to our environment than using pesticides,” continued Hoffmann. The many families who attended the events

learned how Aphids, a common pest, can cause harm to a variety of plant life. Lady Beetle’s, also known as Ladybugs, which are a natural predator to Aphids, help control their population. Quick fact: Ladybugs can eat up to 5,000 aphids in their lifetime! The hands-on events included welcoming 60 Suffolk County Girls Scouts, ages 5 through 14, and their parents, from Northport, East Northport, South Huntington, Kings Park and Dix Hills. “We are honored to be an educator to the community and are always looking to be good stewards to the environment,” said Kristyn Hovanec, Marketing Manager, Pinelawn. “All of our events book up and sell out almost immediately after they’re announced. Each is special and unique and imparts valuable information to the public while also providing quiet moments of remembrance for families.” Pinelawn Memorial Park and Arboretum also brought the event directly

to the residents of Sunrise Senior Living. 40 residents and their families were invited to take part in two sessions, with one specially designed for memory care residents. These educational events are free of charge and open to the public. Pinelawn Memorial Park and Arboretum, located in Farmingdale, New York, is a non-sectarian cemetery prided on creating and maintaining a beautiful and serene environment where families can find tranquility and comfort. Its open and expansive landscape features hundreds of acres of manicured grounds, unique architecture, flowing bronze fountains and flower-lined walks. Its beautiful memorial gardens offer all who visit, scenic beauty where they can reflect upon their loved ones in peace. For more information on Pinelawn Memorial Park and HELPING TO RELEASE LADYBUGS - Girl Scouts Brinleigh Ingwersen and Brooke Arboretum, or to schedule Greening from Troop 215 in Northport and East Northport help release ladybugs at a tour of the property, visit Pinelawn’s annual Ladybug Release. www.pinelawn.com or call 631-249-6100.
