The Lindenhurst Union Free School District is proud to report that it has established a stable, positive financial position, enabling the Moody’s Investors Service to grant the district an Aa2 Moody’s rating, raising the district’s credit score. “The benefit of this upgrade is that Lindenhurst will now be able to secure any required financing, such as Tax Anticipation Notes (TANs), at more favorable (e.g. lower) rates and can also issue bonds at lower coupon rates resulting in a decrease in interest charges,” said Assistant Superintendent for Business, Dr. Grace Chan. According to Moody’s, the Aa2 rating “is driven by the Lindenhurst UFSD’s strong operating performance and multi-year trend of positive tax base growth, which have collectively strengthened the district’s credit profile to a level sufficient for the higher rating category.”

There are three primary purposes for this notice. First, to provide the public an opportunity to express their concerns and

An NYSDEC permit will be obtained for disturbance of tidal wetlands, excavation and fill in navigable waters, and discharge into the navigable waters. No long -term disturbance of tidal wetlands would occur, and the benefits and functional values of these areas would be preserved.
The Village of Lindenhurst proposes to design and implement storm resiliency improvements and public access improvements at the southern end of Shore Road Park, in the Village of Lindenhurst, Town of Babylon, Suffolk County, NY. The entire project area lies within the 100year Special Flood Hazard Area (SFHA), as indicated on the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Flood Insurance Rate Map (FIRM) Community Panel Number 36103C0861H, dated September 25, 2009. The Proposed Activity project would involve the southern 1.2 acres of the 10.2-acre Park and would include; construction of two rock sills along the shore placed at the low and high tide lines to provide protection during wave action at either tide cycle, a concrete sitting wall as part of the high tide rock sill, a gravel road with a gated entry at the southern end of S. Bay Street, living shoreline landscaping, a rain garden, extension of drainage outlets, removal of the top of the existing bulkheads along the shore of the eastern portion of the site (former private residential parcels), and placement of clean fill and riprap where needed.

John Walters, LPN, Nurse Supervisor at Dominican Village in Amityville, has been named the 2019 Assisted Living Nurse of the Year by the National Center for Assisted Living (NCAL). The NCAL Awards Program recognizes exemplary assisted living caregivers and programs. The award winners represent the best of the assisted living profession, a sector of long-term care that fosters choice, dignity and independence. As a nurse supervisor, Walters oversees the clinical needs of the 65 residents at Dominican Village, a 2019 recipient of the Silver—Achievement in Quality Award through the AHCA/NCAL National Quality Award Program. Walters seeks to improve the quality of care residents receive at this Long Island assisted living community by working closely with case managers to develop care plans, setting goals for
his Wellness Department team, and serving as a strong team leader. He is known for going above and beyond the call of duty, often working overtime or checking in on residents, especially those on hospice. His knowledge of and passion for quality, end-of-life care means he is frequently consulted and readily offers additional education and support. Additionally, Walters facilitates a support group for families and caregivers, discussing ways to handle stress, among other topics. John also received the NYSCAL Nurse of the Year award this year from the New York State Center for Assisted Living. “The common element among this year’s recipients is that they all go out of their way to ensure assisted living residents receive the best care,” said NCAL Executive Director Scott Tittle. “Whether supporting
their team members, offering their personal time, or connecting with family members, they inspire those around them. The Social Brain is a brand new 501(c)(3) non profit in the state of New York. They are on the brink of breaking through as one of the most unique and helpful organizations that serves those suffering from a brain injury. Their mission is to provide brain injury survivors the opportunity to build friendships through socialization and reduced isolation. This organization began in January 2019 when a group of individuals, families and professionals joined together to brainstorm ideas of how they can help brain injury survivors socialize and partake in various hobbies together. Many survivors spend much of their lives in and out of rehab and home feeling isolated, but The Social Brain formed to change that. After hosting various events for survivors such as a day at Sweetbriar Nature Center, a Bowling Event, a Library Day and an afternoon at Four Star Ranch, it was obvious that they were reaching a population in need. Just last month, The Social Brain was granted 501(c)(3) status in the state of New York and they have just started working out of a community center located at 202 Middle Country Road in Middle Island. The Social Brain operates solely on volunteers and their outreach comes not only from word of mouth, but from help through their recent partnerships with local hospitals, school districts, neurology departments, Peconic Speech Services in Riverhead and St. Joseph’s College. Survivors from all over Long Island are welcome to get involved with The Social Brain. On average, each event they host has about 30-40 participates and there is no age restrictions.
Recently a 4-week session hosted by The Social Brain and Peconic Speech Services in Riverhead started to help survivors learn social skills, build friendships, find cues from others and interact with peers. The first session was on August 6th and the following 2 sessions will be on August 20th and 27th. Age groups are broken down from ages 5-7, 8-12, teens and adults. Additionally, in only two days (on August 16th), The Social Brain will host a “Basket Night Fundraiser” at the Sound Beach Property Owners Association at 6:30PM! If you bring school supplies to be donated, you will receive a single raffle ticket for each item you donate. Many people choose to be cremated nowadays because of personal preference, or because it is less expensive, or for other personal or family reasons. These are all acceptable reasons, and the only reason cremation would not be permissible for a Catholic would be if it were being done as a way of making a public statement about not believing in the resurrection of the body, which is one of the tenets of our faith. However, although cremation is permitted, the Church does have the clear preference that, whenever possible, the cremation is to take place after the Funeral Mass, so that the body of the deceased can be at the Mass. This is important because a human being is a body-soul unity, and therefore the body is an integral part of our personhood. It is the physical body that encounters grace through the physical signs of the sacraments: the body that was washed in Baptism, anointed in Confirmation, and nourished in the Eucharist should be present for the Funeral Mass. Nevertheless, if for some reason creamation does occur before the Funeral Mass, it is permissible to bring the cremated remains into church and have them at the Mass. Notice the term that is used: “cremated remains”. The Church asks that we use this term instead of the term “cremains,” as the Church feels that “cremated remains” is more dignified as a reference to the mortal remains of the Christian body.
Please keep this teaching of the Church in mind if you are considering cremation for yourself or for loved ones, and please feel free to conact one of the priests if you have further questions about it. November 4, 2012

An aspect of cremation that is often misunderstood is that the final disposition of the cremated remains must be exactly the same as for a body. Cremated remains must be buried in the ground in a cemetery, be entombed in a niche in a mausoleum or some other appropriate structure in a cemetery, or be buried at sea. It is not permissible for Catholics to keep the cremated remains at home, nor is it permissible to sprinkle the ashes (in the ocean or over a field, for example), nor may the ashes be divided up and placed into jewelry (I’m not kidding about that... it’s actually an option in the funeral industry). The Catholic Church teaches that the same reverence and dignity that is given to a dead body must also be given to the cremated remains. Thus, just as one would not keep a body at home, nor divide up a body into pieces, so too with the cremated remains in an urn - there must be proper final disposition for those remains.

GETTING ARTSY THIS SUMMER - During their arts and crafts lessons this summer, students in the Copiague School District elementary summer program made crafts that tied into their lessons in the classroom. Incoming kindergarten students and kindergarten students practiced using primary colors to make a beautiful rainbow. During the second week, students made jellyfish using tissue paper, ribbon and googly
eyes. During the third week, the class read “The Very Hungry Caterpillar” and students had fun making their own hungry caterpillars. They used paper plates, markers, googly eyes, pipe cleaners and rhinestones to create their caterpillars. Students in grades 1-3 used different materials to create fun and crafty projects. During the first week, students made
