Dawn McGrath Of Over 700 Painted Lady Butterflies Educational Bus Transportation Released Pinelawn Memorial Receives Golden Merit Award From NSTA Park and Arboretum Lindenhurst resident Dawn McGrath, an Operations Manager with Educational Bus Transportation in Copiague, recently received The Golden Merit Award from the National School Transportation Association (NSTA) at its annual meeting and convention in Niagara Falls, New York. Established in 1969, NSTA’s Golden Merit Award recognizes school bus employees for their achievements in safety, driver training, business practice, vehicle maintenance, and superior service to their school district, community, and pupil transportation industry. “Dawn McGrath is a consummate professional who possesses the skills and ability that are

paramount to excellence in student transportation,” stated Chloe Williams, Co-Chair of the NSTA Awards Committee. “It gives me great pleasure to present her with The Golden Merit Award for her many contributions to Educational Bus Transportation and the school districts that benefit from her expertise.” McGrath began her career in 1988 as a school bus driver with Educational Bus Transportation before moving on to dispatcher and eventually serving as Operations Manager. recently released 700 Painted Lady butterflies at its annual Butterfly Release, aimed to educate Long Islanders on the benefits the beloved insects bring to the environment, as well as support the species. Led by Fred Hoffmann, Pinelawn’s Grounds Supervisor, who manages the 500-acre property, over 300 community members gathered on Sunday, July 17 in the park’s vibrant Rose Garden to learn more about how these beautiful pollinators contribute to the park’s landscape. “Beyond the butterflies’ obvious beauty, they also play a pivotal role in supporting the landscape,” said Fred Hoffmann, Grounds Supervisor, Pinelawn Memorial Park and Arboretum. “Butterflies act as important pollinators that allow our many gardens, and those of the surrounding community, to prosper. In return, we make an effort to support the species by providing an optimal environment for them, including milkweed, echinacea (Purple Coneflower), and over 24 acres of natural meadows.” As part of an ongoing program offering free events for Pinelawn families and the Long Island community, the organization recognizes the significance of butterflies among the bereaved. You may also want to check your window wells if you have them. Make sure that the soil is loose and able to absorb water so no flooding can occur. In the two years since the Babylon Industrial Development Agency (IDA) launched its Economic Inclusion Initiative during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, the effort has grown into a model of success for others to follow. Childcare To Become More Affordable For Many Low And Moderate Income Families

Suffolk County residents got a boost in paying for childcare. Beginning August 1, 2022, as part of the 202223 New York State budget, families earning up to 300 percent of the federal poverty level will qualify for assistance. Previously, the income standard set by the State for childcare subsidies was 200 percent. Assistance will be administered locally by the Suffolk and Nassau counties departments of Social Services. “A strong childcare system helps buttress a strong economy,” said Adrian Fassett, C.E.O. of the Economic Opportunity Council of Suffolk, Inc., a Patchogue-based not-forprofit that own and operates Way to Grow Child Care Learning Center in East Patchogue. “The reality is that working people can’t get to their jobs if they don’t have a quality, safe place to send their children. More workers are returning to an office setting following more than two years of working from home and we need to do all we can to ensure they have access to excellent childcare.” According to the Governor’s office, thousands of families will now be eligible for childcare subsidies as part of a $7 billion expansion of childcare funding in New York State. “I know firsthand how a lack of childcare can hurt

your career, your family and your future, as a working mother when I was forced to leave my job to care for my child,” Governor Hochul said. “These historic investments in New York State’s childcare system will allow us to forge a new path forward for parents, especially mothers. It is the right thing to do, the moral thing to do, and will supercharge our economic recovery and support working families. Childcare is an essential service, and in New York, we will continue to do everything in our power to make sure more working families have access to it.” Parents can be eligible if they are employed and earn no more than the 300 percent threshold, are enrolled in an education or training program, in mental

health or substance abuse treatment, or are in an emergency situation of short duration. For example, a family of four can earn up to $83,250 annually and still be eligible for subsidized childcare. North Shore Animal League America has a wide variety of dogs, cats, puppies and kittens to choose from. That special pet is waiting just for you!

Ruth Signorelli of Sayville, NY has volunteered with RMHC at Stony Brook Children’s Hospital for the last two-plus years, pushing the colorful “Hospitality à la Carte” cart, delivering much-needed toiletries, snacks, games, books and toys to parents and children in their hospital room. Always arriving at “just the right time”, the volunteers and treats on the cart give an added boost of joy to the day!

Ruth calls it “the most rewarding work I’ve ever done” - but the program still needs more people like her to keep the love ﬂowing.

“We need more volunteers, plain and simple,” says Matt Campo, CEO of Ronald McDonald House NY Metro, which runs the Ronald McDonald House in New Hyde Park and is working toward enhancing their presence in Suffolk County. “Kids and their families count on the volunteers to help them through some of their hardest days.” “I’m like the stranger on the bus,” says Ruth. “Parents of these kids can just sit with me and talk - just dump all their

emotions out and then I can go get them a cup of coffee or something to eat. We even do their laundry; we have facilities where they can shower. It’s simple but some days it’s what they need most.” Currently, RMHC is looking to ﬁll 100 volunteer positions, in New Hyde Park at Cohen’s Children Hospital and in Stony Brook at the Children’s Hospital there.
