Hi there readers! This is Norton von Spudley, flitting in for my mommy, Miss Jamie Lynn Ryan, famed columnist and editor extraordinaire {she made me write that}. You may recall my name being mentioned from time to time in a handful of articles, but I’ve never been given the opportunity to put fin to keyboard and “step in” for In Step - until today. From what I hear, my predecessor, the beloved Buddy the Betta, was quite the regular contributor, even having his name grace the staff box as a guest columnist for a period of time. While I’m certainly no Buddy, I’d like to think I have my own unique charm to bring to the paper. Still a baby by betta fish standards, I’ve resided with my human for nearly two years already, and still going strong! Our story began back in November of 2016, following the passing of Buddy just a few days prior to Thanksgiving. As I darted to and fro in my tiny

betta bowl at the local pet store, a mere speck of a fish, I spotted the girl who would come to adopt me. As she peered through the plastic, fascinated by my deep blue hue and pointy nose, I waved my sheer fins ecstatically and stared intently into her face. It was love at first sight. Fast forward approximately one year, eight months, one week and four days later {fish keep impeccable time}, and our lives have been enriched by each other’s company - well, on the rare occasions she’s actually home of course. Most days have been spent examining my minithermometer {still waiting on a replacement for that, by the way}, combing the gravel for rogue bits of food and lunging out of the water at any who dare peer too closely into my bowl. And then there’s bath time, the dreaded uprooting of my dear plant and redecorating of my abode. As soon as I see the big yellow scoop come out, I flatten myself against the side of the container and refuse

to budge. Feeding times are another nuisance, as my human still insists on crushing my pellets into bits, forcing me to chase my tail for crumbs before they settle on the bottom, never to be seen again. But alas, I’m just a tiny curmudgeon of a ﬁsh, always looking for something to gripe about. Truth is, we are a match made in heaven, both preferring our solitude and possessing a bit of that OCD need to clean up our surroundings constantly. At the end of the day, she waves goodnight and turns off my desk lamp, and we part as friends . . . until the morning comes, and sleepyhead decides to hit snooze a few too many times, delaying my breakfast. Ah, the life of a ﬁsh. Eat, sleep, swim laps. Repeat. And on Fridays in August when my mommy dearest is drained of ideas for her column, I write. Pleasure to make your acquaintance, dear readers. Suffolk Transportation Service, Inc. These scholarship awards go to the school districts’ general scholarship fund and if one of the district’s sports team wins a Suffolk County championship,

The school districts receiving additional scholarships as a result of the achievements of their sports teams are: Connetquot, Hauppauge, Lindenhurst, Longwood, Port Jefferson, Sayville, Smithtown, and Three Village. “For the past seven years, Suffolk Transportation Service has not only provided safe, reliable transportation for our students, but during their tenure they have awarded many scholarships to deserving graduates,” said Fred Koelbel, Director of Facilities and Transportation for the Port Jefferson UFSD. “We would like to express our sincerest appreciation for Suffolk Transportation’s ongoing support and generosity.” With the enthusiastic participation of the vast majority of company employees, Suffolk Transportation Service actively supports well over 50 community organizations and charities.

Scanlon’s Traveling Salon is run by Eileen Scanlon, a fellow New Yorker and Licensed Cosmetologist, whose mission is to cultivate a community based on kindness, respect and equality. With its catchy slogan, Where Style Comes to You, Scanlon’s Traveling Salon serves an abundance of people across Long Island.

As a licensed hair professional, Eileen has a following of paying customers, but her real passion lies with helping those who are not able to afford a haircut or hair process. Some of the communities that Eileen serves are: the home confined and vulnerable, hospice, group homes, sober houses, assisted living communities and those who are differently abled. She always travels to her customers so they can enjoy her services in the comfort of their home or living space and she incorporates her love of social justice and advocacy into her business practice by using only vegan products. I have written extensively about cremation over the years. I have discussed the difference between direct cremation and a traditional funeral with cremation instead of burial. I have previously discussed the relationship of the Catholic Church and cremation. On March 21, 1997, the Congregation of Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments granted the indult requested by the American Bishops to permit the Diocesan Bishop to allow the presence of the cremated remains of the body at the Funeral Liturgy in the Dioceses of the United States. The new ritual adaptations became mandatory on November 2, 1997 in the Diocese of the United States.

Canonical prohibition against cremation was lifted in 1963 on the eve of the Second Vatical Council by the authority of the Sacred Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith (then the Holy Office). Since 1963, cremation of the deceased has become an acceptable alternative to interment PROVIDING cremation was not chosen for reasons which are contrary to Christian teachings. Permission for cremation would be denied only when it is based on secretariat spirit, hatred of the Catholic religion or the Church, or a denial of Christian Doctrine. However, “The Church earnestly recommends that the pious custom of burying the bodies of the dead be observed.” The reason interment of the deceased is preferred over cremation is fundamentally one of pastoral care. Spruce up all around the home. Keep lawn and shrubbery trimmed and free of bicycles and other clutter. Keep the garden beds weeded and mulched. Put a flowering pot on the front step and keep it watered and trimmed. Fill potholes in your driveway and tidy up walkways. Clean off your outdoor furniture; remove any rust (or toss out the rusted item). Clear out the garage of everything but cars. If yours has become a twocar attic, throw out the excess. Straighten gutters, the mailbox, the fence - and other things that sag. Fix doorbells, tighten loose door-knobs, and oil squeaking hinges. Repair broken windows and shutters.

13. Unless you’re a skilled artist, scale down your personal art work (portraits, landscapes), posters, signs, and family photos, especially in teenagers’ rooms. Create a feeling of spaciousness. 14. Keep shades and draperies open, to admit as much light as possible, but screen out unappealing views. 15. Let your kitchen look warm and welcoming, not a hectic workplace. Keep your sink shining and free of dirty dishes at all times. 16. Organize cupboards. 17. Clean the refrigerator. 18. Keep bathrooms scrubbed, tidy and equipped with fresh soap and neatlyhung towels (matching, if possible). 22. Get rid of all stains and install new washers and dripping faucets. 23. Feature (with lighting or furniture arrangement) your home’s best characteristics (a fireplace, a picture window, a balcony, ceiling beams, a kitchen eating area, etc.). 24. If you’ve repainted (preferably in safe neutral tones), add bold splashes of color with your brightest throw pillows, crockery, pictures. 25. Place plants in strategic spots in any room - the bigger the more glamorous, if space permits. 26. Light the whole home, especially dark corners and hallways. 27. Hang mirrors where they will reflect outdoor light - as well as make a room look larger.
