the Suffolk County Legislature’s Be Pool Smart Poster Contest! The contest, designed to promote water safety at home and in open water, has been held annually since 2007 and is aimed at drowning prevention. Violet, who is holding

The Center for Science Teaching & Learning’s (CSTL) expanded Dinosaurs! and Animal Adventure exhibit, featuring four new animatronic dinosaurs, is open and welcoming families and groups. New to the exhibit are five animatronic dinosaurs that are located both inside and outside the exhibition hall. New additions include a mother Triceratops and baby, Citipati (CHITT-uh-PUTTee) and Parasaurolophus (Pear-uh-sore-AWL-oh-fus). A grand re-opening and expansion ceremony with state and local elected officials, VIPs and business leaders, was recently held to mark the occasion. Dinosaurs! And Animal Adventure is the only tourist and educational attraction of its kind on Long Island. Over the past two years, even during the pandemic,

the exhibit has become a very popular family friendly attraction. “The expansion of the Dinosaurs! and Animal Adventure marks the latest step in our mission to inspire and educate. We are certain that everyone that visits our expanded exhibit will be impressed and enjoy our new dinosaurs. Our exhibit will continue to bring tourists and economic activity to Rockville Center and Nassau County,” said Dr. Ray Ann Havasy, Executive Director, CSTL. The exhibit focuses on how animals adapt and survive. This is demonstrated through a unique intermixing of dinosaur models and live animals together. It is housed at CSTL’s 35,000 square foot WAC Lighting Hall of Science at its Tanglewood Preserve headquarters located at

1450 Tanglewood Road, in Rockville Centre. School children and families from the New York region and beyond are expected to visit this exhibit annually to experience more than 80 unique displays. As a science and STEM education-focused not-forprofit organization, CSTL is dedicated to providing people of all ages with a place to engage in both formal and informal learning. Located in Southaven County Park in Brookhaven (between exits 57 & 58 off Route 27) is the home of Long Island Live Steamers, a 501(c)3 nonproﬁt organization. They operate for the education and enjoyment of the public, and to preserve the history and wonderment of the glory days of railroading. All of their members are volunteers and very few of them are professional machinists, most of them are hobbyists. The uniting interest for them lies in steam power, railroad and having fun!

Pinelawn Memorial Park and Arboretum, located in Farmingdale, recently hosted a series of butterfly release events as part of its ongoing community education program. The event was designed to teach attendees about the beauty and importance of butterflies within our environment, and offer a quiet, symbolic remembrance for those who have lost a loved one. “Butterflies are such an important part of our ecosystem. They help pollinate plants and simply make people happy,” said Fred Hoffmann, Grounds Supervisor, Pinelawn Memorial Park and Arboretum. “We hope all our Pinelawn families enjoyed the butterflies and were able to take a moment to celebrate their loved ones surrounded in the

beauty of our grounds.” More than 100 people gathered at the Memorial Park and Arboretum for the interactive session. Individuals, couples, children, and grandchildren were able to create a butterfly craft and release Painted Lady butterflies among the park’s colorful, peaceful gardens. Pinelawn Memorial Park and Arboretum also brought the event directly to the residents of Sunrise Senior Living. Residents and their families were invited to take part in two sessions, with one specially designed for memory care residents. These educational events are free of charge and open to the public. BUTTERFLY RELEASE - Pinelawn Memorial Park and Arboretum, located in Farmingdale, recently hosted over 100 families at its annual Butterfly Release where more than 400 Painted Lady Butterflies were set free in the 500-acre park and arboretum to help pollinate its flowering landscape, and offer a quiet, symbolic remembrance for those who have lost a loved one. Pinelawn’s Kristyn Hovanec, Marketing Manager and Fred Hoffmann, Grounds Supervisor, led the afternoon event by educating Long Islanders about the beauty and importance of butterflies. The many children who attended also had a chance to make beautiful paper butterflies.

Recognizing the ‘Pride of Lindenhurst’ The Lindenhurst Free School District’s Board of Education recently held the first in-person Community Forum on June 16 since March 18, 2020. It was at that time that several awards and recognitions were presented. Traditionally, the Pride of Lindenhurst and the Harvard and Yale Awards are given out annually, however, as schools were required to close their doors for in-person learning, the district was unable to host the ceremony last year. As such, the recipients for 2020 and 2021 were invited to attend and were recognized during the aforementioned community forum. The Pride of Lindenhurst Award is presented in several categories by the members of the board of education in recognition of an outstanding

contribution that inspires pride in the Lindenhurst Union Free School District. As a thank you, parting gifts were given to all attendees. A major reinvestment was made to renovate this restaurant to best serve the community and its needs. The restaurant has been re-launched; offering a modernized guest experience that will meet the needs of the community. Modern decor and new technology offering table service and self-order kiosks create a modern guest experience. The 24-hour drive-thru offers convenience to customers at all hours of the day, especially for those with small children and the elderly not wishing to get out of their car. A higher emphasis is being placed on hospitality by focusing on greeting customers and ensuring a clean and welcoming environment. The restaurant reopened on June 10th after being closed for 6 weeks. An exciting calendar of events took place to celebrate the Grand Reopening. The “Weekend Bash” started with a WBAB /102.3 van visit on Friday

evening which included games and giveaways. A “Midnight Madness” event followed where 100 Big Mac cards, each valid for 10 complimentary Big Macs, were distributed to the first 100 cars. On Saturday, children and their families were entertained by a magician where balloon animals were given to children. A DJ also entertained with a cast of characters which included Space Jam’s Bugs Bunny. The Lindenhurst Fire Fighter heroes made an appearance on Sunday where customers were able to try on the firefighter gear. Fire Safety information, fire hats, and other giveaways were distributed. For the first time in more than a year, we were feeling some hope, or at least cautious optimism, that the pandemic could be over, and we were moving to our new normal. However, I have been following the news that a new mutation of the COVID-19 virus, called Delta, could bring it back, and it might be even stronger. According to reports in Newsday, there has been an uptick in COVID-19 cases in the past few weeks, which is unsettling at best. The fast-spreading Delta variant is of concern, and, as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has shared, this has

quickly become a pandemic of the unvaccinated. Although it has been disturbing to learn of breakthrough infections, the data shows that the vaccine is highly effective against getting COVID-19, and, most importantly, it is nearly always effective against severe illness and death. Virtually 99% of the recent hospitalizations and deaths of COVID-19 are among those who were not yet fully vaccinated. Getting vaccinated helps protect you, and your family members, especially if they are unable to get vaccinated, like children under 12-years old. Please, also remember

to exercise caution if you are unvaccinated, or suffer from immunerelated health conditions, by wearing a mask when at indoor venues, or in large, outdoor crowds. As well, let us all continue to exercise basic public health measures, such as hand washing, social distancing, and following up with a physician if you feel any symptoms. burns. UPMC HealthBeat notes that thermal burns typically occur when a person touches flames or fire or hot molten liquid or steam. Thermal burns also can result when touching a hot object, such as cooking pans, irons or heated appliances. WebMD

advises burn sufferers to call 911 immediately if the burn penetrates all layers of the skin; if the skin appears leathery or charred, with white, brown or black patches; or if the hands, feet, face, or genitals are burned. In addition, call 911 immediately if infants or

seniors suffer any burns, even if the burn does not appear severe. Treatment will depend on the severity and location of the burn. In the immediate aftermath of a thermal burn, Stanford Children’s Health advises cooling the affected area with cold water or a cold

compress until the pain is reduced or alleviated. Avoid breaking any blisters that form, and protect the burn with a dry, sterile gauze bandage or with a clean bed sheet or cloth. Do not attempt to remove clothing that is stuck to the burned area. In such

instances, cut around the clothing and leave the burn intact. Resist any temptation to apply ointments, oils or sprays to the burned area, as these should only be applied when prescribed by a doctor.

Well, unless something goes horribly wrong, there will be no crawling on my part next month. There will be new listings, closings, and happy clients...but no crawling backwards.
