Hold On To That Balloon! PSEG Long Island cautions that metallic balloons can be hazardous

PSEG Long Island is reminding customers that balloons released into the air can become entangled in overhead electric equipment and cause a host of problems. “Safety is PSEG Long Island’s No. 1 priority. That’s why we’re cautioning customers to please hold onto their metallic balloons,” said John O’Connell, PSEG Long Island’s vice president of Transmission and Distribution Operations.

“Though they’re festive, fun and look nice, we want the public to be aware that metallic balloons also conduct electricity. A Message From Lindenhurst Mayor Michael Lavorata In recent years, the number of trees planted in the Village of Lindenhurst has been far less than the number of trees removed. Many trees have been lost due to nor’easters, hurricanes, and wind storms over the past several years. The Village has also had to take down trees that were causing uprooted sidewalks, dangerous conditions, and, in some cases, diseased trees. As the Mayor of our Village, I am announcing that the on-going removal of trees, without replanting new ones, is going to stop. The Village’s new policy will be that, for every tree taken down or removed, a new tree will be planted. There are many benefits to having trees planted in our Village. It is no secret that our air quality is not what it used to be. Harmful greenhouse gases have been building up in the atmosphere, creating a dangerous bubble. The majority of greenhouse gas is made up of carbon dioxide. The benefits of planting trees to absorb these gases is truly a nobrainer. Trees provide cleaner air by adding oxygen, and soaking up

carbon dioxide, creating cleaner, healthier air for us to breathe. Trees are our biggest tool in the struggle to lower atmosphere carbon, and mitigate climate change. Many residents ask the question, how do I know if my street tree should be removed? Residents can call the Department of Public Works (631-9577520), and a Foreman will make an inspection of the tree to determine if it meets the Village criteria for tree removal. Trees will be removed if they are determined to be dead, dying, diseased, or dangerous. If the tree does not meet these criteria, the tree will not be removed. As your Mayor, I cannot emphasize this enough – planting, preserving, and caring for trees will again become a top priority for

the Village of Lindenhurst. Tree preservation will complement our overall green initiative, which has included the installation of a solar car port at the LIRR commuter parking lot, solar panels at the Rainbow Community Center & Village Hall, and the conversion of Village street and ball-field lights to energy-efficient LED lighting, Reducing the carbon footprint is one of the greatest challenges of our generation, and trees are here to fight with us. Let us build a greener future together! I remain proud to serve as your Mayor. Let us continue to work to ensure Lindenhurst will be a great place to live, work, and play, for many generations to come.

Annual Commencement Celebrates Lindenhurst High School Class Of 2022 Smiles and cheers from family and friends welcomed a distinguished group of graduating seniors on June 24 to a sun-covered field for the Lindenhurst High School commencement ceremony honoring the Class of 2022 and celebrating their collective accomplishments. As “Pomp and Circumstance” carried through the air, the excited graduates took the Edward F. Kienle Memorial Field for the last time as students of the Lindenhurst Union Free School District. The commencement exercises then began with the national anthem performed by the senior music students under the direction of Charles Pramnieks. Valedictorian Atahan Yetimoglu then took the stage and reﬂected on what his fellow classmates have overcome and the great things they will achieve next in life. “Together we

will persevere through all of the obstacles that life has in store for us because I know the Class of 2022, and I know that we are all destined for greatness. I am proud of what we have accomplished in such unprecedented times, and I am proud of us for what we will achieve in the future.” Continuing the ceremony, Salutatorian Randy Ramsuchit delivered an insightful speech, sharing the importance of being present and appreciating the moment. He wished his classmates well as they move on to their next steps in life. “We, the Class of 2022, are capable of accomplishing anything we put our minds to,” he said. “Our journey as high schoolers ends here, but a new, unique path will be shaped for each one of us. Hungry Caterpillar” by Eric Carle. “You are about to break out of the cocoon of high school and become, what will you become?” she asked. “The answer is, whatever you want to be. I know enough about you to know that is the truth. You have perseverance, grit,

tenacity, strength, heart and knowledge. All of these years and all of that hunger made that true. Out of that cocoon will ﬂy doctors, urban planners, teachers, construction workers, auto mechanics, fashion designers, you name it. They are sitting before us.” Members of the Board of

Ronald McDonald House Charities® New York Metro www. rmhcnym.org Families can travel hours for lifesaving treatments. Families without accommodation near a hospital can endure long drives, lost jobs, worried siblings left at home and for some, no place to sleep. They’re far from family and friends who give them support. However, Ronald McDonald House Charities® (RMHC) New York Metro, a 501c3 non-proﬁt organization, keeps families seeking medical treatment for their sick children near the care they need and the families they love. The mission of RMHC New York Metro is to build a community of compassionate care by creating and supporting programs that directly improve the health and well-being of sick children and their families. “Since its inception in 1986, the Ronald McDonald House has served an average of 1,000 families per year,” said Matt Campo, CEO, RMHC NY Metro. “We’ve given back 27,000 hours to the families to spend with their child that might have otherwise been wasted driving back and forth to hotels, to eat meals, or to do laundry. Everything a family needs for long term accommodation can be found in our house.” RMHC New York Metro runs a variety of programs, dating back to 1986 when the 42-bedroom Ronald McDonald House in New Hyde Park opened. Located immediately adjacent to the Cohen Children’s Hospital, providing the comforts of a home and compassionate care that meet the unique needs of families with sick children. The organization also operates a Family Room at Stony Brook Children’s Hospital, which gives temporary respite to families who would otherwise spend hours and even days at their children’s bedside. The corresponding Hospitality Cart, staffed by volunteers, brings refreshments and joy to the hospital rooms of children receiving hospital

care. RMHC New York Metro thrives on the participation of its volunteers from across Long Island to help families focus on what is most important: the health and well-being of their children. These children and families rely on the support of volunteers to make their days easier, and volunteers contribute to a variety of meaningful and important activities every day. Volunteers also bring joy to families through the Family Room program, opened in 2013 and serving 3,500 families every year, as well as their Meals from the Heart and Treats from the Heart Programs, which invites individuals into the kitchen at the Ronald McDonald House to cook a homemade meal and delicious desserts for families. Throughout this month, you will learn about more about RMHC New York Metro, including proﬁles of some of their volunteers, the grassroots leadership coming from Long Island Communities that helps support the organization and the aggressive expansion plans for Suffolk County to help families there that are in need. Pictured here, with Coaches Rob Moore and Mike Canobbio, are (left to right) Chris Carson, Thomas Walker, Brandon Reybok, and Thomas Charlwood. Chris Carson, a Junior, has already verbally

committed to accept a baseball scholarship to Stony Brook University – Division 1, and was named All County. He struck out 68 batters in 42 innings pitched! Thomas Walker was named the team MVP, and was voted MVP of the highly competitive League 2. He had an amazing 38 hits for the Bulldogs! A Junior, Thomas was a finalist for the prestigious

Carl Yastrzemski Award. Brandon Reybok, who will play at SUNY Purchase, was named All League for the second straight year, with an ERA of 0.92. Thomas Charlwood, a Junior, was named All League. He had 16 RBIs, and struck out 34 batters in 32 innings pitched. The Bulldogs Baseball team ended the season with 14 wins – good work team!
