Town of Babylon Supervisor Rich Schaffer, Deputy Supervisor Tony Martinez and Clerk Gerry Compitello recently attended the street renaming ceremony for John J. Zaffuto, a World War II Veteran who was injured twice while serving our country. Catskill Avenue in Copiague is now ceremoniously known

as John J. Zaffuto Avenue between 29th and 30th Streets. Brendan Cunningham, a representative from New York State Assemblywoman Kimberly Jean-Pierre’s Office, was also in attendance. Zaffuto, 97, has been a resident of Copiague since 1956. During his time of service in the European Theater, Zaffuto

landed on Omaha Beach before making his way to Germany. Zaffuto completed his tour despite twice being injured in combat. At the ceremony, Schaffer, Martinez and Compitello thanked Zaffuto for his service and congratulated him for the honor he received.

The Fresh Air Fund’s Suffolk and Nassau Counties’ Volunteer Committees held their annual “Day in the Friendly Towns” on Wednesday, July 11th. Sponsored and hosted by White Post Farms, Fresh Air children, their host families, and The

Suffolk County Legislature Presiding Officer DuWayne Gregory celebrated the inaugural year of his Distinguished Youth Awards Program by presenting awards to 35 young adults who participated in four areas to earn Bronze, Silver and Gold medals. The event was held at the William H. Rogers Legislature Building in Hauppauge where the students gathered with their parents to be recognized by Presiding Officer Gregory and the Legislator representing the district in which they live. Students, 12 of whom earned the Bronze Award, Nine who worked to earn a Silver Award and 14 earning a Gold, completed requirements that included 200 hours of Volunteer Service, 100 hours of Personal Development,

Pink Aid, based on Long Island and Connecticut, presented a grant to the Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program to assist their bilingual social workers to provide counseling, patient navigation and support services to underserved women. Pink Aid’s mission is

to help underserved local women survive breast cancer treatment with support and dignity, to provide screening to women in financial need and to empower breast cancer survivors to heal by helping and inspiring others. Metamorphosis “We delight in the beauty of the butterﬂy, but rarely admit the changes it has gone through to achieve that beauty.” ~ Maya Angelou We all have a path, a journey we take through life. Some are relatively direct, with few bumps and curves along the way; others prove far more winding and full of detours. In the end, though, I believe we all reach the destination we are meant to. Eventually. Last week, I touched on some of the ways I go about my craft, and how my writing has evolved through the years. In speaking to the next generation of potential journalists, the best experience I can draw upon is my own. There was a time when I was in their shoes, sitting in high school classrooms and then college lecture halls, wondering where exactly this path I had chosen would lead. It was during those formative years that I looked to my own sources of inspiration in the writing field for guidance, absorbing their styles and studying their techniques for

some hint of how I could apply these skills to my own drafts and create a unique voice. Just today, in fact, I found myself perusing the archives of past “In Step” columns, searching for a tribute I had written following the passing of Ed Lowe, master storyteller, and one mentor I had the extreme good fortune to work with during my time here at South Bay. Seldom do we have the opportunity to meet our idols, let alone share in our mutual love of a particular craft. No matter the difference in age, or how vast the generational gap, there is simply no substitute for the wisdom of someone who has experienced those things you only dare to dream. If you had asked me back in my formative years where I saw myself in ten, fifteen years time, I probably would have shrugged and said, “Hopefully reporting from the clubhouse of the New York Yankees” or “traveling across the country ala Almost Famous, searching for the next big story to be featured in Rolling Stone Magazine.” Realistic? Perhaps

not entirely. But these were the people, and the positions, I admired from afar and wished to emulate. Maybe it was the sense of prestige I found attractive, the celebrity aspect. Fast forward into the real world of adulthood, and it wasn’t long before I discovered that, if you truly have a love for writing - or any particular skill - it truly doesn’t matter where you do it, what the topics entail or how much notoriety you gain in the process. The fact is, you can make a significant difference on any level, even within the confines of the local community you grew up in, surrounded by the family, friends and local followers you may be fortunate to gain along the way. And that is exactly what has happened, from this desk in Farmingdale, as I put fingertips to keyboard each week, drawing from my own life experiences and those who have inspired me. The path may not always be clear, but the passion has never wavered. That, above all else, is what makes the journey worthwhile.

As a licensed hair professional, Eileen has a following of paying customers, but her real passion lies with helping those who are not able to afford a haircut or hair process. Sometimes, something as simple as gaining a new look can help a person feel better about him or herself and gain confidence again. Eileen generously and freely gives people that opportunity. CREMATION AND THE CATHOLIC FUNERAL RITES Part Four For the past several weeks I have been discussing the changes in the Catholic Funeral Rites as they pertain to cremation. It is important for all to understand the Catholic Church views the cremated remains of a person the same as it views the body of a person. Therefor, the cremated remains are to be treated with the same reverence and respect as the body which houses the person’s spirit. Another problem arising from cremation is many people think all cremations are “direct cremations” without any services or mass. A cremation can and often does take place after a wake and a funeral mass. A direct cremation does not allow for any pastoral care which is recognized by the Church as an integral part of the grieving process. It has long been a Christian and Catholic tradition for family and friends to gather before the funeral mass to offers support to the bereaved, as well as offering of prayers for the deceased with family and friends present, as opposed to the Jewish tradition when the family sits Shiva only after the funeral service and interment. Vito Giannola is the Vice President and Treasurer North America for Luxottica Group, a world leader in the design, manufacture and distribution of fashion, luxury, sports and performance eyewear, has been named Chairman of the American Heart Association’s 2018 Long Island Heart Walk. This year’s walk will be taking place on Sunday, September 16th at Jones Beach in Wantagh. In his current position, Vito leads the North American Corporate Treasury function, managing Luxottica’s portfolio of investments, risk and liquidity. In addition to his role as Treasurer, over his 32 years at Luxottica Vito has held many Director and Executive level roles. In the early part of his career he managed the finance, operations and

distribution divisions of the wholesale business, and was instrumental in developing the processes and policies necessary to address a business tripling in size. During this time, he was routinely called on to present earnings results to Luxottica’s largest global investors. Later on, Vito managed the M&A activities critical to Luxottica’s growth in North America. In 1995 there was the $1.5 billion acquisition of The US Shoe Corporation, the parent company of Lenscrafters. Four years later, an asset purchase of the eyewear business of Bausch and Lomb, brought the iconic Ray-Ban brand to the Luxottica portfolio; and in 2001, Luxottica concluded the stock purchase of Sunglass Hut. Vito also led the many spin-off transactions that resulted from these acquisitions. “I am honored to serve

Suffolk Federal’s Vice President of Information Technology and extreme distance marathon runner Eva Casale heightened awareness for our veterans and raised almost $30,000 in support of Hope for the Warriors. Eva completed seven marathons, with extra stops amounting to more than 194 miles, over the course of seven days. Each day’s marathon focused on honoring local servicemen killed in action and was linked to the communities they called home. The team delivered over 184 ﬂowers at Points of Honor during the 7-day program and the public was also able to participate in the final 3.1 mile leg of her journey at the end of each day. “This was a heartfelt running tour of over 194 miles which enabled me to utilize my passion for running to bring Long Islanders together to support programs and services for veterans and to acknowledge how much ‘Every Veteran is Appreciated,’” explained Casale. “I created Team E.V.A. which stands for ‘Every Veteran Appreciated,’ to honor those who have made the ultimate sacrifice to defend our country.”

Grant Received Community Housing Innovations (CHI), a nonprofit housing organization, is looking for first-time homebuyers on Long Island who need down payment assistance. The New York State Affordable Housing Corporation recently awarded $1,000,000 to the agency to provide onetime down payment and rehabilitation assistance grants to qualified homebuyers who wish to buy a home in Nassau or Suffolk County.

“We are grateful to New York State Affordable Housing Corporation for providing CHI with this grant which will allow 40 families to purchase their first homes this year,” said Alexander H. Roberts, Executive Director of CHI. Since 1997, CHI has been operating its Renters into Owners program, which administers New York State grants averaging $25,000 each for down payment and home improvements to income-eligible first-time homebuyers. Through this

program, CHI has provided over $11 million in down payment assistance grants and free counseling to over 750 families and individuals. To be eligible, homebuyers must meet the definition of a firsttime homebuyer and have at least 3% of their own savings to contribute toward the purchase. For a family of four, income must not exceed $104,563. Other income requirements may be found on CHI’s
