Properly cleaning up after animals is another simple way to reduce the risk of diseases being transmitted by pets. The CDC advises cat owners to scoop cat litter daily and change it at least twice per week. Pregnant women should never clean cat litter. Dog waste should be promptly removed from private and public spaces. When cleaning cages, habitat and pet supplies, do so outside the home to avoid contaminating interior surfaces. Equity First Foundation (EFF) is a 501c3 nonprofit organization located here on Long Island. Rhonda Klch started this foundation with the mission to offer services, resources and programs to consumers and small businesses that are facing financial distress. Although the details of financial markets may not be necessary for everyone, a good understanding of everyday finances is needed to ensure your home, bank account and additional assets are protected as you go about your life. This nonprofit is guided by a board of experts from the Long Island business community. They strive to educate the community so people can make financial decisions with knowledge and confidence. EFF provides financial education, literacy and best practices at low or no cost to individuals and groups from primary school through retirement and including life events. Rhonda Klch, Executive Director of the Equity First Foundation has taken all necessary steps to get out of her comfort zone and attack COVID with her resources. As a women entrepreneur, she used her relationships, social media and community to power through this current pandemic. Although EFF has switched their programs from in person to virtual, they have been well received. They continue to offer free financial counseling and outreach resources for numerous families on Long Island. The Equity First Foundation has three different types of programs that they offer: Educational Institution Program This program focuses on k-12, post secondary, and trade schools with student types comprised of all abilities including special needs and developmentally disabled. It is offered as a workshop / assembly that can last for as short as 45 minutes to as long as a full day or mini series. Each program is uniquely designed to fit the educational facility after a comprehensive needs analysis. Some sample topics that can be addressed are: career options by salary, understanding
EquityFirstFoundation
money management, life skills, healthy financial choices, creating a budget, creating a savings account and more. Community Outreach Program The Community Outreach Program focuses on independent facilities, partnering charities and nonprofits, community centers, libraries, career fairs, guest speakers, events and more for all demographics. These are offered in as short as 45 minutes to as long as a full day or mini series. Some sample topics are: first time home-buyer, understanding student loans, improving your credit, avoiding senior scams, understanding your retirement plan and more. Corporate Awareness Program This program focuses on a lunch and learn structure for 10 or more employees. Some sample topics are: paying off debt, understanding your 401K, saving for vacation, your family on a budget and benefits of good credit. EFF has been on the front line of helping families in need with food and assisting with a health care PPE program. This pandemic has opened our community up to more financial hardships then imagined. This organization is asking for your help in becoming an advocate for their food drop initiative to help families like yours or your neighbors. Hunger does not discriminate in a time like this. VILLAGE OF LINDENHURST NOTICE OF PUBLIC HEARING
be given as to the regulation of 24 hour business operations and other retail businesses that operate between the hours of 1:00 a.m. and 5:00 a.m., excluding bars, taverns, and restaurants that are otherwise regulated by special permit from the Village Board of Appeals. The Board of Trustees enacts this moratorium so that it might have sufficient opportunity to evaluate the permitted uses in the Business District and their hours of operation and determine whether the hours of operation of permitted uses in the Business District should be statutorily amended, altered, modified, expanded or repealed as part and parcel of a plan to continue to revitalize the area without negatively impacting its residential neighbors. A moratorium would also permit the Board of Trustees to consider whether buffer zones or distance restrictions are appropriate. This moratorium will provide an opportunity for the Village Board of Trustees to evaluate the Code changes needed without the possibility of new businesses opening that might conflict with the plan being developed. The Village Board has, therefore, determined that a moratorium be established prohibiting any new permitted uses which operate between the hours of 1:00 a.m. and 5:00 a.m. in the Business District. This moratorium shall be geographically limited in application to all properties within the Business District zoning classification. In establishing this moratorium the Board has also considered:

NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that a public hearing will be held Via Zoom Conferencing on the 11th day of August 2020 at 2:30 p.m. or as soon thereafter as can be heard, on the question of the enactment of Local Law #3-2020, as follows: LOCAL LAW #3-2020 A Moratorium on 24 Hour Business Uses Section 1. Purpose. The purpose of this local law is to promote and protect the public health, safety and welfare of the Village of Lindenhurst, by enacting a local law which establishes a moratorium on certain uses in the Business District between the hours of 1:00 a.m. and 5:00 a.m. The Village of Lindenhurst has put forth a significant effort to support and revitalize the Business District. As part of these efforts the Village has completed numerous infrastructure improvements to attract business and enhance the appearance of the downtown, including the addition of brick pavers, road reconstruction, drainage, parking, decorative street lighting, planters, and recreational and cultural opportunities. Numerous new projects have enhanced the appearance and character of the Business District Village wide. The Board of Trustees has also enacted certain zoning amendments to create a more desirable and attractive Business District including the addition of multiple family residences. The Board of Trustees finds that careful consideration is also required to ensure the compatibility of Business District with the surrounding residential community. The competitive local business environment is spawning more and more businesses remaining open continuously for 24 hours. The Board is concerned that given the Business District’s close proximity to residential areas that certain businesses of this nature are of such a character that they will detrimentally impact the quality of life of the surrounding residents between the hours of 1:00 a.m. and 5:00 a.m. The Board finds that such 24 hour continuous uses are often the source of quality of life complaints from residential neighbors concerning noise, littering, traffic, lighting, and privacy. These complaints negatively impact a community. As such, particular consideration must

The need to attract retail business of such a character as to encourage, foster and promote the revitalization of the Business District while at the same time mitigating any detrimental impact on surrounding residential properties. 3. The need to ensure adequate parking and lessen congestion while balancing the need for business growth. 4. To provide adequate light and air. 5. To ensure physical compatibility with surrounding uses. 6. The need to reduce noise, litter, traffic and lighting which detrimentally impacts residential areas adjoining Business District property. 7. To encourage historic preservation. Section 2. Prohibitions. Any

This local law shall not apply to bars, taverns or restaurants which are otherwise regulated by the special permit authority or existing businesses uses in operation at the effective date of this local law to the extent such uses are not in compliance herewith and otherwise legally permitted. Section 4. Moratorium.

For a period of one year from and after the effective date of this law, no application for the construction, erection, maintenance, or change of use to a use which is prohibited herein may be filed, accepted, or processed. For the purpose of this law, an application shall be deemed to mean any request for official action by the Board of Trustees, or other boards, departments, or agencies of the Village of Lindenhurst. No use which is prohibited herein and not otherwise exempt from the application of this local law may be maintained. b. The Board of Trustees of the Incorporated Village of Lindenhurst shall have the power to vary or modify the application of the provisions hereof after public hearing by resolution of the Village Board, in its absolute and sole discretion, provided that such variance, or modification is consistent with the Village zoning plan, and with the health, safety, morals and general welfare of the Village. Section 5. Validity. If any section, sentence, clause or phrase of this law is held to be invalid or unconstitutional by any court of competent jurisdiction, then said holding shall in no way affect the validity of the remaining portions of this law. Five Northwell Nurses Answer Governor Cuomo’s Call In response to Governor Andrew Cuomo’s appeal for health care workers to provide assistance to other cities and states currently battling an uptick in coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) cases, five Northwell Health nurses answered the call and travelled to Houston to lend a hand.
Speaking via Zoom, the five nurses (four from North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset and one from Long Island Jewish Medical Center in New Hyde Park) were in unanimous agreement that pitching in at the two Texas church testing sites was “the Northwell way.” Each nurse echoed the belief that it was
a “no-brainer” to volunteer for this assignment where their work would take place in largely minority neighborhoods. Andrew Roberts, the project manager for emergency deployment at Northwell, said the deployed nurses have been tasked with setting up satellite testing sites in underserved
communities as well as registering and swabbing those who come for testing. “Most importantly, they are providing education about the importance of wearing masks, quarantining if symptomatic or testing positive, proper hand hygiene and maintaining social distancing,” Mr. Roberts said. “When Governor Cuomo asked if we could lend support to other states, we were proud that Northwell stepped up to get involved,” said Mr. Roberts. “These five people left their homes, their families, and their friends… we are so grateful to them and so proud.” The five nurses who volunteered to travel to Houston are: • Kristine Chan, RN, North Shore University Hospital; • Lauren Ann Henry, RN, Long Island Jewish Medical Center; • Anjanette Rosario, RN, North Shore University
Hospital; • Shiney Paul, RN, North Shore University Hospital; and • Timothy Verhey, RN, North Shore University Hospital. Perhaps Nurse Paul expressed the feelings of the group best, when she said, “We came down here together as a team. Back in New York, we were hit very hard by COVID-19 at the beginning. Now, we felt it was our time to give back to the communities that are going through this now. Creating A Personal Funeral Service: Part Four Throughout our lives whenever we or someone close to us has a major event, i.e. birth, first birthday, Holy Communion, Graduation, Bar Mitzvah, Wedding, 25th Anniversary, holidays, etc. to commemorate such events we celebrate with a ceremony. Some of the ceremonies are elaborate affairs that take months if not years to plan, some are simple family only affairs but there is always a ceremony. For some reason, many have come to think the death of an individual does not call for any ceremony to commemorate or celebrate the life of the deceased. All too often I hear people say “I do not wish to be a burden or bother anyone just cremate me and spend my ashes in the ocean” or I hear the family come in and say “he was a simple person who did not want anything just a cremation and bury the ashes in the garden.” Although these procedures are expedient, in my opinion it is not the right thing to do for the survivors or the deceased. I am not saying that you must have a traditional funeral with a viewing and a funeral mass but I am saying some type of ceremony should take place to commemorate and celebrate the life of the deceased. I have helped families coordinate funeral services and catering for over 300 people in attendance. I have also provided information for the family to do their own personal ceremony without anyone else present. Virtual Meditation Workshops
During the July 15 organizational meeting, the Lindenhurst Union Free School District Board of Education installed its officers for the 2020-2021 school year. The meeting was held virtually, with the exception of some members of the board, two administrators and the district clerk who physically met and distanced themselves from one another in the auditorium of the Lindenhurst High School. Incumbent trustee Michael DiGiuseppe and newly elected trustee Gabrielle Anzalone were sworn in inperson at the meeting, along with District Clerk Donna Milone and Superintendent of Schools Daniel E. Giordano. Trustee Josephine Martino was sworn in prior to the meeting, as she attended the meeting virtually. Donna Hochman and Edward Langone were reinstalled as president and vice president of the board, respectively.
