6 year old Jayden Magliaro, has been supporting the Wounded Warrior Project by hosting a “Lemonade Stand” since 2018. At the age of 3, Jayden met several Wounded Warriors, and they made a lasting impression on him. Since he started fundraising, his goal has always been to give back to those that gave and sacrificed for others. This year Jayden will continue to run his “Lemonade Stand” however, due to the pandemic he will be taking it to a virtual platform with raffles and online

auction the week of July 25, 2020. The auction and fundraising event will run on Facebook https:// www.facebook.com/Events /1966447760155124/ and will conclude on Saturday, July 25th with an opportunity for Jayden to meet and greet all of his supporters (while abiding by social distancing guidelines) at his home 69 East Seacrest Ave Lindenhurst, from 11pm5pm. Rhonda Klch, Executive Director of the Equity First Foundation has taken all necessary steps to get out of her comfort zone and attack COVID with her resources. As a women entrepreneur, she used her relationships, social media and community to power through this current pandemic. Although EFF has switched their programs from in person to virtual, they have been well received. They continue to offer free financial counseling and outreach resources for numerous families on Long Island. The Equity First Foundation has three different types of programs that they offer:

Educational Institution Program This program focuses on k-12, post secondary, and trade schools with student types comprised of all abilities including special needs and developmentally disabled. It is offered as a workshop / assembly that can last for as short as 45 minutes to as long as a full day or mini series. Each program is uniquely designed to fit the educational facility after a comprehensive needs analysis. Some sample topics that can be addressed are:

career options by salary, understanding money management, life skills, healthy financial choices, creating a budget, creating a savings account and more. Community Outreach Program The Community Outreach Program focuses on independent facilities, partnering charities and nonprofits, community centers, libraries, career fairs, guest speakers, events and more for all demographics. These are offered in as short as 45 minutes to as long as a full day or mini series. Some sample topics are: first time home-buyer, understanding student loans, improving your credit, avoiding senior scams, understanding your retirement plan and more. Corporate Awareness Program This program focuses on a lunch and learn structure for 10 or more employees. Some sample topics are: paying off debt, understanding your 401K, saving for vacation, your family on a budget and benefits of good credit. The Town of Babylon Local Development Corporation (LDC) has approved a $100,000 endowment to support the local art community as well as proposals to beautify Babylon. In partnership with Babylon Citizens Council on the Arts, Inc. (BACCA), the first $20,000 of the endowment will focus on projects that renew the beauty of the Town’s downtowns as well as programs that are aimed at bringing the community together. The funding is part of the Town’s Babylon is Back initiative which serves to provide businesses with additional support as they recover from the COVID-19 pandemic. “We have a strong arts community within the Town of Babylon that is eager to get started on many public beautification projects,” said Matthew McDonough, Director of the Babylon is Back Program. “Our partnership with BACCA will not only improve the overall aesthetics of our Town, but the projects that this money will fund will attract visitors to our area and help businesses rebound from the impacts of the COVID-19 shutdown.”

With the LDC’s backing, BACCA will host several art projects across the Town of Babylon over the coming months in partnership with local artists, organizations, and small businesses. These projects include outdoor painting classes, a drive-in concert featuring local musicians, murals and other public art installations to be featured in a “Babylon Together Arts Trail.” One of the first mural efforts will take place at the HRHCare Health Center in Wyandanch and will be facilitated by Saint-Cyr Art Studio. The approximately 12 foot by 90 foot mural will be designed and completed by selected students from the 2020 graduating class of Wyandanch High School and the theme of the mural will focus on improving mental health. “We are extremely appreciative of the LDC’s support of our mission to provide an avenue for residents to safely reconnect and boost morale within the community as we support local artists,” said BACCA Executive Director, Elizabeth Mirarchi. “The affects of the current health crisis have been felt by all, and small businesses as well as

the arts and entertainment sector have encountered unprecedented challenges. This opportunity will allow us to create a lasting impact on our community through the arts.” Each art installation planned under the initiative is part of BACCA’s larger vision to have an art trail throughout the Town of Babylon, giving residents and visitors a new attraction which will also help bring patrons to local businesses within the area. He was also preceded in death by his beloved wife Angelina Trinceri LaRocca; sons, Jimmy and Tony LaRocca; siblings, Beatrice Rizzo, Frank LaRocca, Martin LaRocca, Rosie Palagonia and Edmund LaRocca; and grandson, Thomas LaRocca.

Mr. LaRocca was a Tool and Die maker by trade and later retired from the Town of Babylon. He was a member of St. Matthew Catholic Church in Charlotte, NC. While in New York, he was active and loved to sing. He recorded a song and was invited to sing on the Mary Margaret McBride radio show in his youth. He traded his “singing career” to share his life with his beloved wife Angelina. Vincent was very social and outgoing even in his senior years. He enjoyed attending Town of Indian Trail events and a huge Yankee fan. He was a Grandpa and a friend to all.

As the temperatures continue to rise across Long Island, many are heading in the pool to cool off. But, 2020 is no normal year. In the midst of the COVID pandemic, is it safe to take a dip in the pool? Stony Brook Medicine experts have what you need to know. Sharon Nachman, MD, Chief of Pediatric Infectious Diseases at Stony Brook Children’s Hospital, says pool safety requires a different mindset this year. Dr. Nachman shares why children and families should be able to enjoy swimming this summer season: The most important issue is not transmission of COVID-19 while swimming in a pool, but rather the time gathering around a pool. If people gather around too closely and in large groups, that is an added risk for transmission of this dangerous virus. A good rule of thumb is to stretch one’s arms out from your body. If someone is within that length of you sitting or standing around a pool, it’s too close. Take precaution and physically distance from each other. The risk of contracting COVID-19 from someone in a pool is small mainly because pools are chlorinated, which kills the virus. Plus, the volume of water dilutes the virus, therefore water splashing would not likely carry COVID-19 in a chlorinated pool. Saltwater pools are also safe, as saltwater kills the virus too. When it comes to public pools, follow these guidelines: If you are feeling sick or a child is not feeling well do not go to a public pool. Sit and hang around with your family members who you know do not have COVID-19. Do not gather closely with strangers. Pay attention to town and municipality rules. Some towns may limit the number of people who can be at the pool location or have certain

social distancing policies for reasons of safety. Dr. Nachman adds that safety against infections and disease is not just about COVID-19 and applies for any year. While contracting COVID-19 remains a threat in societal settings with large groups of people or those in close contact, she says please remember there are other infectious disease threats in summer pool settings. Outside food brought to a pool party: Food can get contaminated or spoil if left out in the heat or sun. Other viruses: Viruses including coxsackie (hand, foot and mouth disease) are typically seen in the summer months. Mosquitoes: Don’t discount the dangers of mosquitoes that feed at dusk. Families are advised to think about what they are wearing at dusk on a hot summer day. COVID-19 is not the only thing families should keep in mind as they hit the pool. According to the CDC, about ten people die from unintentional drowning each day. Of those, two are children aged 14 or younger. Kristi L. Ladowski, MPH, Injury Prevention & Outreach Coordinator for the Stony Brook Medicine Trauma Center has some overlooked pool dangers to watch out for at any age: Knowing how to swim does not mean someone is drown-proof. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission

found that nearly 60% of children under 5 years old were not expected to be in or around the pool when they drowned. The presence of adults is not the same as someone actively supervising children in and around pools. Drowning is silent and can happen in seconds. When it’s time to swim, Ladowski says to designate a Water Watcher. It is common for a group of adults to be around, but no one is actively supervising the pool. Water Watchers should: Be one specific person at a time Only watch the pool; do not socialize, read, or use electronic devices Switch off with other adults for breaks, designate Water Watchers for shifts (such as 15 minutes) Have a cell phone nearby only for use in case of an emergency Stay sober Toddlers and children up to 4 years old are at the greatest risk of drowning both indoors and outdoors. It only takes an inch of water for a young child to drown. Here are a few extra tips for this age group: Use “touch supervision” in and around pools and bathtubs; always staying within arm’s reach If you need to leave the pool area or bathroom, take your toddler with you Empty all containers after use; buckets, wading pools, coolers with melted ice Remove all floats and toys from the pool so children are not tempted Prevent children from going outside unnoticed using locks and safety gates Make sure adults and older children know to always close doors so toddlers can’t get outside Lastly, Ladowski urges those spending time by the pool to remember the importance of learning CPR in case an emergency does arise.

Economic Opportunity Council Of Suffolk, Inc. Receives Federal Funding To Help Low Income Suffolk Residents The Economic Opportunity Council of Suffolk, Inc. (EOC of Suffolk) has received $1.7 million in federal funds to provide financial assistance to individuals and families facing economic hardships arising from COVID-19related disruptions. The funds are being made available to eligible Suffolk County residents

who have either lost their jobs, became temporarily unemployed, or faced financial difficulties because of the pandemic. The funds originate from the federal Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act – commonly known as the CARES Act – which is providing $41 billion in funding to supplement the nationwide

Community Services Block Grant (CSBG) program. Signed into law on March 27, the relief program aims to address the consequences of increased unemployment and economic disruption resulting from the COVID-19 virus. “The Coronavirus pandemic has triggered the most damaging economic crisis America has faced

in some 80 years,” said Adrian Fassett, CEO of EOC of Suffolk. “During this difficult period, these federal funds will help our organization fulfill our mission of promoting the economic self-sufficiency of Suffolk County residents.” An applicant’s eligible expenses can include food, funeral costs, rental expenses, broker fees,

utility expenses, medical expenses, retraining expenses, clothing, bedding, toiletries, and other expenses. Household income cannot exceed 200 percent of poverty guidelines. The determination of financial eligibility for CARES assistance does not factor in an applicant’s supplemental

Creating A Personal Funeral Service: Part Three For several weeks we have been discussing how to create a more meaningful funeral service by making it more personal. I am talking about the entire funeral process not just the actual funeral service. You can personalize the music during the wake if you so desire. I knew one family which at the beginning and end of each visitation for about five minutes played Frank Sinatra singing “I Did It My Way” loud enough for everyone to hear and by the end of the second visitation everyone sang along. The deceased was a life-long fan of Sinatra and endured and conquered many hardships by doing things her way. Another family redecorated my chapel with deceased’s artwork. I have also assisted families in arranging personal memorial services in their own home or restaurants where friends gathered to reflect and share memories. My point in that a funeral should reflect the life of your loved one. Whether the service is a tradional funeral with a wake, funeral mass and an interment or the service is a memorial mass or memorial funeral service which takes place after the cremation or interment. The funeral is for you and your family and friends to come together to offer support, love and share memories which help you get through a most diffcult time. If you have a question call us.
