Gershow Recycling Grants Scholarships To Graduating High School Seniors Despite the coronavirus pandemic and its impact on local businesses, Gershow Recycling continued to provide financial assistance to graduating high school seniors from Long Island and the New York metropolitan area with its Environmental C o n s e r v a t i o n Scholarship. Now in its 12th year, this one-time, $1,000 scholarship is given to a student who intends to continue their studies in either engineering or environmental science after graduation. Most high schools also had to adapt to the pandemic as they transitioned to virtual scholarship ceremonies. This allowed local Gershow managers to record congratulatory

6 year old Jayden Magliaro, has been supporting the Wounded Warrior Project by hosting a “Lemonade Stand” since 2018. At the age of 3, Jayden met several Wounded Warriors, and they made a lasting impression on him. Since he started fundraising, his goal has always been to give back to those that gave and sacrificed for others. This year Jayden will continue to run his “Lemonade Stand” however, due to the pandemic he will be taking it to a virtual platform with rafﬂes and online auction

Creating A Personal Funeral Service: Part Two Last week we asked you to think about developing an idea that would contribute to a personal funeral service - which would have the greatest meaning to you and your family for your loved one. We stated that it did not matter whether you were planning a traditional funeral with a wake and church service or whether you were planning a direct cremation or direct burial with a memorial service at a later date. We feel, from all our experiences, those who take the time to think about a funeral service which recalls the joy and comfort the deceased brought forth into you and your family’s lives begin the mourning process with a much better focus. Pictures of times gone by are a wonderful reminder of a person’s contributions to joy and happiness. Letters written by friends co-workers and family also remind you of the joy the deceased brought into your hearts. Although flowers contribute beauty and are an integral part of the funeral process - instead of flowers you may wish to ask friends and family members to contribute pictures or a written story to the funeral service. Some of you reading this article may also wish to consider bringing pictures or a written story to a funeral instead of sending flowers, the family would greatly appreciate your efforts. You may wish to have one or several people deliver a eulogy. With consultation with the clergy/minister the eulogy can be delivered at the church, during the funeral, or at the memorial service. It can also be delivered at the funeral home the night before the funeral. Because of the difference in the funeral mass and funeral service, it is preferred that the eulogy for Catholics be delivered in the funeral home the night before for several reasons, the most important being the length of the eulogy. It is extremely rare that a Protestant church would have more than one funeral service on any given day. Whereas, Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church often has two, three or up to four funeral Masses in one day, not including the three scheduled masses everyday. The sheer numbers and the desire to accommodate all the families in the parish preclude lengthy eulogies. You would not want to postpone your funeral because another family took 45 minutes to eulogize a member of their family. Think about it, come talk to us and we will help you.

National Grid is warning customers to beware of a new phone scam where imposters are demanding immediate bill payment and threatening service disconnection. This latest scam, which is targeting customers already facing hardships due to COVID-19, involves callers who pretend to be National Grid representatives. They tell customers that unless payment is made within 30 minutes, their power will be shut off. The customer is then directed to call “the direct billing department to make a payment and avoid power disconnection.” The scammers use sophisticated phone systems that display National Grid on the customer’s caller ID. Additionally, the phone number customers are instructed to call closely resembles the company’s recorded messaging and phone prompt directions. These elements make it difficult to differentiate an actual National Grid call from an imposter’s call.
