income. Tina juggled work, school and raising two boys along with many other life responsibilities during her years with New Ground. She attended an Associate Degree program part time and finished in three years. She then immediately started a Bachelor Degree program, which she completed in three years. Following each accomplishment, she secured better paying employment and used her extra earnings to reach her financial goals. Upon completing the New Ground program and moving into a market rent apartment, she continued her education plan. This May she graduated with her Master Degree in Social Work and this summer she will become a homeowner! Tina stated, “I feel awesome, I feel accomplished. It has been a long journey. I’m just happy and overwhelmed. I love working with people and there is a big need for people to care for other people now. It’s what New Ground did for me, helping me to get where I am. Now it’s my turn to help someone else.” As you can see, New Ground is a huge help to the homeless community on Long Island and is there for those in need. They are currently in need of volunteers to help out in various areas of their organization. If you have a background in Education and wish to help tutor individuals out of their Levittown Main Office, the opportunity is available. You can also get involved with one of their Event Committees to help coordinate one of their upcoming special events, or with their Program Committee, which meets quarterly to review overall programs and services. New Ground is a non-profit organization that helps break the cycle of homelessness right here in Nassau and Suffolk counties by dealing with it’s underlying causes, rather than merely treating symptoms. New Ground empowers children, parents and Veterans to achieve their goals so that they can secure a brighter future for generations to come! This organization provides a portfolio of programming delivered by professionals, so that a set of services is customized in a unique way for each Veteran and family they serve. This way they can solve all of the underlying causes of their situation at the same time. They truly believe that this is how you break the cycle of homelessness! Since opening their doors in 1991, New Ground has seen over 80% of the families they have served “graduate” from their programs self sufficient and in permanent stable housing. This week I would like to share yet another success story. Please note: The name of the individual mentioned in this story has been changed for confidentiality purposes. A Long Island resident, Tina, found New Ground when she was facing eviction from her apartment and had nowhere to go with her two young sons. She had fallen behind on rent because of a significant decrease in her paycheck and she did not have the means to pay off this debt or to afford a new apartment. She moved into the Long Term Housing Program with New Ground, where she paid an affordable rent based on her income and began to receive all the intensive social work and education services necessary to help her turn things around. While in the program, Tina paid off significant debts on her credit report, increased her score by over 200 points, created a savings and secured better paying stable employment. However, her real focus was education. She agreed with New Ground that the way out of her cycle of poverty was a higher degree to ensure greater

11th ANNUAL ALUMNI BASKETBALL GAME - On May 31, 2019, the Copiague High School Boys’ Basketball Program and Copiague Booster Club hosted it’s 11th Annual Alumni Basketball game in the Walter G. O’Connell/Copiague High School Gymnasium which was run by the Boys’ Varsity Basketball Coach - Steve Rebholz. Graduates from as far back as 1969 and early as 2018 joined together to make two teams filled with Copiague pride and talent. All who attended were treated to a competitive contest filled with Copiague spirit which rivaled a professional game A halftime break included a very exciting 3 point shoot-out along with raffles so generously donated: Splish Splash, Adventureland, Ducks Tickets, and Red Lobster. It was a fantastic evening which brought friends, family, school, and the community together.

§ 193-181. Prior construction regulations. Nothing herein contained shall require any change in the plans, construction or designated use of a building, the construction of which shall have been started before the date of the passage of this Article and the ground-story framework of which, including the second tier of beams, shall have been completed within six months of the date of such starting, and which entire building shall have been completed, according to such plans as have been filed, within one year from the date of the passage of this Article.

§ 193-179. Board of Review. There is established a Board of Review to hear applications by property owners claiming legal nonconforming use. This Board shall consist of three members. The Village Board, the Village Attorney and the Zoning Inspector of the Village of Lindenhurst shall each designate one representative to be the members of this Board. § 193-180. Nonconforming uses. The lawful use of a building existing on the effective date of this Article may be continued, although such use does not conform to the provisions of this Article. A. Extension. A nonconforming use shall not be extended, expanded, enlarged, reconstructed, structurally altered or restored by any means or in any respect whatsoever, nor shall any external evidence of a nonconforming use be increased unless in accordance with §193-160. B. Changes. No nonconforming building, structure or use shall be changed to another nonconforming use. C. Whenever a nonconforming use of a building has been substantially discontinued for more than six months, such nonconforming use shall thereafter be determined to be illegal and in violation of this Article. Whenever a nonconforming use of a building has been changed to a higher classification or to a conforming use, such higher or conforming use shall not thereafter be changed to a use of lower classification. D. No building which has been damaged by fire or other causes to the extent of more than 50% of physical structure, as determined by the Buildling Inspector, or his designee, exclusive of foundations, shall be repaired, rebuilt or used except in conformity with provisions of this ordinance. E. Prior Use. Nothing herein contained shall be deemed to affect any legally existing use of a building at the time of the adoption of this Article and not conforming to the regulations of the district in which it is maintained.

§ 193-182. Existing uses in buildings. Any use legally existing in any buildings at the time of the passage of this Article and not conforming to the regulations of the use district in which it is maintained may be continued therein. A nonconforming building shall not be structurally altered to accommodate another nonconforming use. § 193-183. Application for certificate of occupancy for a nonconforming use. A. There shall be submitted to said Board by every applicant four copies of a current survey of the property, a letter from the Building Department of the Village of Lindenhurst stating that the building existed prior to whatever zoning the uses predates and an affidavit or affidavits from parties other than individuals related to the applicant/owner stating the evidentiary facts which claim to establish such use as a legal nonconforming use. B. The applicant shall submit a professionally prepared radius map detailing all properties and listing all property owners within a two-hundred-fifty foot radius of the subject property. Stated on the radius map or upon an attached paper shall be a listing of the affected property owners and such additional information as shall identify each property owner to the premises which he or she may own. C. The applicant will give notice to all property owners located within the twohundred-fifty-foot radius of the nonconforming application. The notice will state the purpose of the applicant and the date, time and location of the public hearing. Such notice shall be on a form prescribed by the Board of Review and shall be mailed to such property owners by certified mail, return receipt requested, not less than 17 days in advance of the date upon which this Board shall hear and consider the application. Prior to such hearing, the applicant shall file with the Board of Review all of the return receipts, together with a radius map, in two copies, depicting the affected premises and all premises situated within 250

An applicant, in applying to the Nonconforming Use Board, shall pay to the Village of Lindenhurst a review, filing and advertisement fee established by resolution of the Village Board of Trustees. § 193-184. Hearing. A. The Board of Review shall hold a public hearing at which the applicant and persons who have submitted affidavits shall appear before this Board. The burden of proof shall be upon the applicant to show that such use existed before the applicable zoning ordinance and that such use has not lapsed. B. Upon the evidence submitted, the Board of Review shall make a determination, in writing, confirming or denying that such use is a legal nonconforming use and shall further state those facts which this Board finds has established such use. § 193-185. Issuance of certificate of occupancy. A. Upon confirmation by the Board of Review of any legal nonconforming use pursuant to this Article, a Building Inspector or other persons charged with the issuance of certificates of occupancy and/ or certificates of compliance shall issue to the applicant a certificate of occupancy with an endorsement thereon specifying the legal nonconforming use found by the Board of Review, and such certificate shall constitute presumptive evidence that such use is a legal nonconforming use in any action or proceeding brought to enforce this Article. B. Decisions by the Board of Review shall not be subject to further administrative review. § 193-186. Severability. If any clause, sentence, paragraph, section or part of this article shall be adjudged by any court of competent jurisdiction to be invalid, such judgment shall not affect, impair or invalidate the remainder thereof but shall be confined in its operation to the clause, sentence, paragraph, section or part thereof directly involved in said judgment. Honoring The American Flag

Many of the students throughout the Lindenhurst Union Free School District recognized Flag Day on June 14. Donning red, white and blue, the students of Daniel Street Elementary School honored their flag with a special ceremony in which they sang patriotic songs including “America the Beautiful,” “The StarSpangled Banner” and

“Grand Old Flag.” Members of the Boy Scouts assisted in raising the American flag and members of the Girl Scouts and the fourth grade class shared their original Flag Day poetry. Principal Linda Domanico described the history of the flag to students and gave a description of its meaning and symbolism. There were musical performances from

the school’s band under the guidance of teachers Phil Riccardi and Kelly Hayes. The ceremony concluded with students Alana Ferguson, Jamie Laier, Sydney Scuola and Alexandra Wysocki performing a special and patriotic song for the audience of proud students and staff.

CONSERVATION SCHOLARSHIP - Pictured are Alyssa Rosenberger (left), a member of Patchogue-Medford High School’s Class of 2019, and Tanya Pottinger (right), Human Resources Generalist, Gershow Recycling. Ms. Rosenberger was awarded a one-time scholarship in the amount of $1,000 from Gershow Recycling. As a leading environmental recycling company, Gershow awards the competitive scholarship to graduating seniors who have displayed exemplary efforts in the fields of environmental science or engineering while in high school and plan to continue to pursue higher education degrees in either of these areas of study.
