Long Island Fight for Charity will reveal the courageous men and women volunteer boxers who will enter training to prepare to box in the organization’s 15th Main Event this fall. The “2018 Boxer Announcement Reception” will be held on Tuesday, June 26th, from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at the Heritage Club at Bethpage, 99 Quaker Meeting House Road, Farmingdale. The Association for Mental Health & Wellness

The Association for Mental Health and Wellness (MHAW) is a non-profit behavioral healthcare organization on Long Island. They serve more than 3,000 clients each year among 33 diverse communities throughout Suffolk County at four sites. Two of these sites are based in Ronkonkoma, one is based in Riverhead and the last is based in Yaphank. This Association was formed in 2014 with the merger of three successful organizations in Suffolk County. Those organizations are the Mental Health Association in Suffolk County, Clubhouse of Suffolk and Suffolk County United Veterans. The Association for Mental Health and Wellness works vigorously to provide a comprehensive range of personcentered recovery and wellness-driven programming for adults who are affected by psychiatric disabilities, trauma and complex health conditions. They run the following programs and services: The NYS-Funded Personalized RecoveryOriented Services, Health Home Care Management Services for Children and Adults, Peer Recovery Oriented Services, Supported Housing for Those Diagnosed with a Mental Illness, Mental Health Helpline, Community Health Education, Support Groups, and Behavioral Health Home and Community Based Services. They also operate an organic garden and multiple food pantries. If you or someone you know

MHAW is very excited about its 6th annual Kick Stands Up event, which will take place on Sunday, July 22nd at the Amphitheater at Bald Hill in Farmingville. Lasting from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., this motorcycle, poker run and car show will benefit at-risk and homeless veterans of the Suffolk County United Veterans Project. All who attend will receive breakfast and the chance to win prizes throughout the day. The entry fee for motorcycles and cars is $20; for walk-ins, it is $5 and for children under 12, it is free. The Lindenhurst High School Student Council dramatized the consequences of drinking and driving with “Shattered Dreams,” a program that promotes responsible decision-making by high school students regarding drinking and driving. The event included a mock accident scene in which several students were seriously, and in one case fatally, injured as a result of a student’s decision to drive home while intoxicated after a party.

The junior and senior classes looked on as various community entities, including local fire and police responded to the mock scene behind the high school. They watched as police officers tested and “arrested” their classmate whose decision to drive impacted the lives of so many others. On the second day of the event, the students watched Student Council members re-enact a memorial service for their fellow classmate emphasizing the gravity of

situation and reinforcing the message that even one drink can destroy lives. As a culmination to the program, Certified Speaking Professional, Bobby Petrocelli, spoke with students and shared his experience with a drunk driver. The experience claimed the life of his young wife and changed him forever. He explored with students the power of each decision they make. He also encouraged them to recognize all of the ways in which they matter.

POETRY SLAM DUNK - Students in Anastasia Kourtis’ class poetry slam class at Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School spent the year learning about different poets and writing their own poetry. Valedictorians Honored

Bossert, SCSSA presidentelect and Elwood School District superintendent of schools, and Roger Tilles, New York State Education Department Board of Regents member. During her keynote address, New York State Commissioner of Education and University of the State of New York President MaryEllen Elia encouraged the valedictorians to ask questions about what it took to get here today and how they can, in turn, support and champion public education tomorrow. “We all benefit from public education, which needs to be supported,” Elia said. “You can give back to support the work that was given to you.” Each valedictorian was called to the stage to receive a certificate and gift of recognition.

During their individual acknowledgements, the universities they plan to attend and their intended majors were announced. The impressive and prestigious list of schools included Boston College, Cornell University, Dartmouth College, Harvard University, Princeton University, Purdue University, Stony Brook University, Tufts University and Yale University. The SCSSA and its corporate sponsors also awarded 12 scholarships to graduates planning to pursue a career in education or social services. In his closing remarks, Dr. Bossert thanked the valedictorians for giving school district administrators and parents a reason to be proud. “It’s the work you do that makes the work we do rewarding,” he told the students.

Class Visits Town of Babylon Clerk Gerry Compitello and members of other departments at Town Hall recently welcomed a Western Suffolk County BOCES class for a tour and information session

about the workings of local government. The tour, led by Compitello and a representative from the Supervisor’s Office, allowed the group to visit each office in Town Hall to learn

their different functions. At the conclusion, the students, ages 14-20, were able to sit at the dais in the town boardroom and received special certificates for their visit.
