The Kiwanis Club of Lindenhurst has awarded scholarships to six deserving graduates of Lindenhurst High School from the class of 2022. For over 60 years the club has focused its fundraising efforts largely on its scholarship fund in order to grant students awards over the four years of their college studies. Up to and including the Class of 2021, it has awarded a total of $470,400 to 279 recipients. The William Jubak Memorial and Richard Heuwetter Memorial Key Club Scholarships are awarded to Key Club members to honor William Jubak, the first Key Club advisor at Lindenhurst High School and Richard Heuwetter, a past Lt. Governor of the Suffolk West division.

The Tony Lazio and Larry Troiano Memorial Scholarships are named for early Club members. A new award this year is named in honor of Nives Hoffmann Lozito, who taught at the Daniel St. School in Lindenhurst and is awarded to a student who is planning to study elementary education in preparation for a career as a teacher. This year’s recipients of the Jubak and Heuwetter awards are Key Club members Oleksandra Blyshchak, Jenni McPadden and Alyssa Wronski. Ms. Blyshchak has been president and secretary of the Key Club. She plans to attend Northeastern University in Boston and study business administrationfinance and accounting. Ms. Mc Padden has

been vice president of the Key Club. She wishes to study Zoology and will attend State University of New York at Oswego. Ms. Wronski has also been a Key Club officer. She plans to attend the University of Delaware and major in neuroscience and minor in music. Recipients of the Lazio and Troiano awards are Samuel Ogunwale and Leonardo Ruiz. Samuel plans to attend Georgia Tech in Atlanta and study computer science. Leonardo plans to attend Molloy College and study nursing. Georgia Mazza is the first recipient of the Nives Hoffmann Lozito Memorial Scholarship. She plans to begin her studies at Suffolk County Community College.

A Day Of Art & Music At Nautical Park In Amityville

Babylon Citizens Council on the Arts (BACCA) and the Village of Amityville, NY present Art in the Park, a FREE public one-day event featuring an outdoor art gallery, artist vendors, plein air painting, and live jazz curated by The Jazz Loft of Stony Brook as part of their “Jazz Dispatch” series. Nautical Park is located at 201 Merrick Road, Amityville, NY 11701. This beautiful setting alongside an inlet is the perfect venue to enjoy an afternoon of art, music and nature. Art in the Park will take place on Saturday, June 11, 2022 from noon until 5:00PM., and the rain date is Sunday, June 12th. Parking for the event will be available at Amityville Memorial High School located at 250 Merrick Road. Jazz performances during

the afternoon will be by the Steve Salerno Trio and the Equity Brass Band. There will be plein air painting during the day led by artist Magaly RaveloChong. Town of Babylon Cares, the newly founded conglomerate of the Lindenhurst Community Cares Coalition, Copiague Cares, the Deer Park Drug Prevention Coalition, and the Belmont Lake Civic Association, closed the month of April with a three-day Rally for Recreation and Prevention conference. The Rally held Thursday, April 28th, included a guest appearance by former New York Knick Michael Sweetney, who shared his “inspiring journey of loss, hope, and finding the strength to reach out for help when you need it.” The night also included a great array of prizes, music, and fun for all ages. “Bouy’s Law,” Sponsored By Senator Brooks, Passes Both Houses Of NY Legislature

In a unanimous vote, Senator John E. Brooks was able to pass Senate Bill S.1289-B for the 4th time since he first sponsored it. What makes this time different is the fact that its “same as” bill in the NYS Assembly (A.4978; Englebright) finally passed several days earlier after having been held up in committee during previous legislative sessions. Also known as “Bouy’s Law,” S.1289-B requires veterinarians to provide certain information to animal owners regarding the drugs dispensed to an animal. Such information includes the name and description of the drug, the directions for use, actions to be taken in the event of a missed dose; instructions for proper storage, any common reasonably anticipated adverse effects associated with the use of such drug, and manufacturer precautions and relevant warnings. “For most of us, our pets are members of our families and when they are sick or in pain, we want to know as much as possible about possible treatments and their consequences,” said Senator Brooks. “Since veterinarians are already provided this information, it would seem only common sense to advise pet owners as to all potential side effects of prescribed medications.

With the passage of Bouy’s Law we are making this a legal requirement so that more informed decisions can be made and potential tragedies averted.” All for the love of a dog… In 2013, Mary Kate Tischler and her late husband Jimmy took their beloved 3 year old Yellow Labrador Retriever, Bouy, to have routine knee surgery after which he was prescribed a painkiller to aid his recovery. Unbeknownst the Tischlers, the drug was known to have serious sideeffects on some dogs and because they had not been given any prior warning from the veterinarian, they began to administer the drug as per his instructions. As a result, Bouy began to suffer acute kidney failure and was eventually put to sleep. Sadly, this tragedy, like many others affecting pet-owners across New York State,

might have been avoided had there been a requirement to establish informed consent for prescribed medications. “From the moment when Buoy’s tragic fate became clear to us, Jimmy and I began efforts to ensure that Buoy’s short life would have meaning,” said Mary Kate. “The most important thing to us was to raise awareness about the lack of required warnings and to attempt to ensure that no other pet would suffer the way that Buoy did. And, when Jimmy himself suffered an untimely death six years ago, I continued to march on with our fight for the enactment of Buoy’s Law. Today, I am confident that Jimmy and Buoy are smiling down on me, very proud!” Now that Bouy’s Law has passed both the Senate and Assembly it is expected to be signed by Governor Hochul before the end of the year.

On Saturday, May 7th, 2022, the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office Hockey Team took on the New York Cancer Foundation in a charity hockey game at Dix Hills Ice Rink! The charity showdown served as a rematch of the first “Hockey for Hope” game, which was won last August by the Sheriff’s. Executive Director of the New York Cancer Center Tina MacNichollToulon was on hand for the game, which also included Suffolk County Corrections Investigator Meghan Adamo singing a beautiful rendition of our National Anthem, and New York Cancer Foundation Grant Recipient Laura Stempkowski dropping the puck for the ceremonial face-off!

“Sheriff Toulon and his entire Office do a tremendous job in protecting and serving the residents of Suffolk County,” said Presiding Officer Kevin McCaffrey from the bleachers of the ice rink, “and for them to continue to give back beyond their County service through raising funds for charity and encouraging the growth of the sport is truly inspiring.” When the final horn sounded, the New York Cancer Foundation found itself victorious, keeping hold of a four-to-zero shutout and tying the series between the Foundation and the Sheriff’s at one a piece. Little Flower was founded in 1929 by Catholic priest Monsignor Bernard Quinn who came to Wading River, Long Island, looking for a haven for the youth of his parish in Bedford Stuyvesant, Brooklyn, that were excluded from programs and services at the time. Since then, Little Flower has grown and adapted to address the unmet needs of thousands of children, families and individuals with developmental and intellectual disabilities. One of this organization’s oldest and largest programs is its family foster care program, which has served children and families throughout New York City and Long Island since 1952. Little Flower is committed to ﬁnding safe and nurturing homes for children and young adults that are unable to remain home with their families because they believe every child should have guidance, stability and love. Little Flower strives to meet the immediate needs of children entering foster care by partnering with dedicated foster parents who bring experience and skills in supporting children experiencing trauma. Potential foster parents undergo a thorough application and screening process, complete training, and participate in a home study before becoming a foster parent. The Little Flower team provides ongoing support and services to foster parents to ensure they can create the most nurturing environment for the foster children in their care.

Little Flower Children and Family Services of New York (Little Flower) is a human services organization that transforms caring into action to deliver services, programs and direction to improve the lives of children and families in crisis and people with developmental disabilities across New York City and Long Island.

Additionally, Little Flower partners with foster parents and children’s families to support the children while their family receives the support and services they need to safely parent upon the child’s return from foster care. They also work with extended family to ﬁnd relatives or other permanent homes for children who cannot safely return to their parents. This

Foster Care program is committed to supporting children experiencing trauma and strengthening families. For children requiring specialized care, Little Flower offers a Therapeutic Foster Boarding Home (TFBH) program based on their Wading River campus that works with children placed in foster care through Nassau or Suffolk County. Therapeutic foster parents are provided with additional training and certiﬁcation to best care for the specialized needs of the foster children in their home. In addition to providing temporary care for children in a safe and nurturing environment, foster parents work closely with the organization’s social work team and the child’s parents in support of family reuniﬁcation or permanency planning and ensure children are available to attend family visits. Foster parents model positive behavior, provide guidance and positive experiences, as well as support educational, dental, medical, and mental health needs of the child. Little Flower is proud to partner with such compassionate individuals willing to help children in need thrive and reach their full potential. Vivian M., a foster parent with Little Flower for more than 13 years, shared that she became a foster parent because she “loves children and wanted to make a difference.”

Heather Catron and Joseph Flohr’s students from the 10:1:1 Life Skills class at the Lindenhurst Middle School recently worked on a recipe unit. The class worked together to choose a recipe for pizza biscuits. Students

then created a budget and shopped for the best deals. The students followed the recipe and prepared the meal. They really enjoyed the fruits of their labor and gave them a 5-star rating. Students are now selecting their own

recipes, creating a budget and shopping for the best deals. The class plans to make all the recipes and then, using Book Creator, the students will create a class recipe book to share.

Lindenhurst UFSD Hosts Successful Dual-Language Family Night The Lindenhurst Union Free School District held a successful dual-language family event on April 26 at Albany Avenue Elementary School. There were more than 120 participants from the K-2 program and parents continued to be very supportive of the programs’ growth.

Students and their families participated in three spring themed stations, including a Yoga at which students learned different poses and techniques; a planting station where they were able to decorate a pot and plant a small seedling and a craft station where they

made their own bug jar and bug mask. The Lindenhurst Public Library was in attendance and students ended the night with some educational games that were raffled off while everyone enjoyed light refreshments and snacks.

New York State Park Lifeguard Opportunity On Long Island The New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation (State Parks) is hiring new lifeguards for the summer season with no prior certification required. There are positions available at Montauk/Hither Hills, Wildwood, Orient, Jones Beach, Robert Moses, Heckscher & Sunken Meadow State Parks. New York State Park lifeguards must meet certain eligibility criteria, which includes successfully completing the qualifying procedure, before being hired. Candidates must be 17 years of age to take the exam and valid photo ID is required at check in. Applicants must have 20/70 uncorrected vision in both eyes. Contact lenses or glasses are not permitted. VALID CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer and first aid certification is preferred but not necessary at time of hiring. *All certifications must be completed by the end of rookie training in order to graduate. Lifeguards will be hired at $18.15 an hour.

The qualifying procedure will be held on Sunday June 12th promptly at 7:30AM at Suffolk Community College, Grant Campus, Brentwood, NY. The final event of the new hire procedure will take place at the West Bathhouse Ocean front at Jones Beach. Lifeguard candidates must provide their own transportation from Suffolk Community College to Jones Beach. On-site registration opens at 7am & the test will start at 7:30am. The exam consists of 100-yard timed swim, 50 yard cross chest carry, ¾ mile run and 350-400-yard timed ocean swim. You must bring sneakers! All components are timed and scored based on your finished time. Results of Sunday mornings exams will be announced, and a rookie draft will take place over zoom on Monday, June 13th, 2022 9am. A link will be emailed to all candidates who successfully completed both portions of Sunday morning’s exam. Those candidates who successful accept positions

on Sunday, will be required to attend 5 paid days/40 hours of Jones Beach Lifeguard Rookie Training beginning on Saturday, June 18 through Wednesday, June 22nd. The parking lot at Costello’s Ace Hardware of Copiague was jam-packed on the Sunday of Memorial Day Weekend for the KiDS NEED MoRE Charity Drive-In Movie featuring ENCANTO. Folks were able to attend for a donation of any amount. All proceeds benefit local kids coping with cancer and other lifethreatening illnesses. Executive Director and Co-Founder of KiDS NEED MoRE, Melissa Firmes explained, “we initially launched our monthly drive-in movie series at Ace in Copiague when COVID hit so that we could give folks in the community a free night outside that was safe, comfortable, and fun.
