Lindenhurst Memorial Day Ceremony Mayor Michael Lavorata has announced that the United War Veterans Council has decided not to hold a Memorial Day Parade this year. However, the Village of Lindenhurst will be holding a Memorial Day Commemoration Ceremony, on Monday, May 31, 2021 at 10:00 a.m. The service will take place in front of Lindenhurst Village Hall, located at 420 South Wellwood Avenue. All are welcome to attend this outdoor service. We ask all who come to adhere to current New York State COVID-19 guidelines.
External Diploma Program The External Diploma Program offers adults 21 and over, the opportunity to receive credit for their life experiences, and earn a high school equivalency diploma without the challenge of taking lengthy timed examinations. EDP, is a competency based program for students who are unable to attend classes or who prefer to work at home. Successful candidates for EDP include former ESL students, students who have been out of school for prolonged periods of time, or students who fare better without the structure of tests. Hope House Ministries (HHM) is a nonprofit organization located in Port Jefferson. They provide compassionate, comprehensive and competent care for the poor, the marginal and the wounded among us. This commitment is woven in the Gospel vision that all life is sacred and every human person is unique and has the right to be respected and protected. They have accomplished much over the 40+ years they have been helping others with minimal financial assistance from federal, state or county agencies. They depend on the generosity of private contributions, fundraising events and corporate donations. Hope House Ministries services people in both Nassau County and Suffolk County, offering services free of charge. Together, their staff and volunteers have created an empowering sense of family and community that are the change agents, helping young people grow in self-discipline, critical thinking, problem solving skills and personal responsibility. All of the services Hope House Ministries offers are FREE! This includes housing, supportive professional services, counseling, healthcare, insurance, transportation, food, clothing and opportunities for education both for both high school, college or trade school. When explained to those new to their agency, few believe it possible. Many question how they are able to stay open. The answer is best left to the words of one of our alumni, “Hope House is truly a miracle. And that miracle is healing.” Simply put, your contributions make this miracle happen. The three most popular programs that HHM runs are their Hope Academy at Little Portion Friary, Montfort Therapeutic Residences and Pax Christi, their Emergency Shelter. See below for more information on each of these programs. Hope Academy at Little Portion Friary: In response to the opioid crisis, HHM
acquired Little Portion Friary in Mount Sinai in 2016 as a means of increasing their ability to serve more young men struggling with opioid addiction. This program assists in the development of a life plan with short and long term goals. It also promotes the development of interpersonal skills. The length of stay varies based on need, averaging 12-18 months. Each person is treated individually by professional clinical staff. Montfort Therapeutic Residences: This is an intensive therapeutic treatment facility for children ages 11-18 who find themselves caught in the family court system. These children come to them at a time of great crisis in their young lives. Montfort Therapeutic provides the young residents with a healthy, stable environment, a school program, individual counseling, group dynamics and educational recreational outings. The program also includes aftercare services for children returning home. Pax Christi: This emergency shelter offers guests who are homeless a safe alternative to the streets. Pax Christi offers case management, drug and alcohol counseling, mental health counseling, linkages to benefits and resources in the community, as well as the basics of food and shelter. Over 50 active volunteers assist with cleaning, making beds, painting, serving meals and providing food and clothing for guests. HHM is truly a selfless and heartwarming non-profit right here on Long Island. The Village of Lindenhurst is pleased to announce that, with modifications for COVID-19, it will again be sponsoring the annual Summer Recreation Camp at the Village Park. Camp begins July 5, 2021 and ends August 13, 2021. Camp hours are from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM Monday through Friday. The camp is open to Lindenhurst children who are eligible to attend the Lindenhurst School District. To be considered, campers must complete kindergarten by June 2021. Campers are grouped by age: 6-7 boys, 6-7 girls, 8-9 boys, 8-9 girls, 1014 boys, and 10-14 girls. We are determined, just as last summer, to follow all recommendations and protocols established by the CDC and Suffolk County Board of Health, as related to the coronavirus. APRAXIA AWARENESS DAY - On May 14, 2021, the Village of Lindenhurst acknowledged “Apraxia Awareness Day.” Childhood Apraxia of Speech (CAS) is an extremely challenging neurological speech disorder that affects 1-in-1,000 children. The disorder causes children to have significant difficulty learning to speak, and is among the most severe speech deficits in children. Pictured here with Mayor Michael Lavorata is the Pope Family, who have two sons diagnosed with CAS, and who have been working to bring about greater awareness of the disorder. Interesting facts about Memorial Day Each year on the last Monday of May, Americans celebrate Memorial Day. Memorial Day is a federal holiday that honors and mourns American military personnel who died while performing their duties in service to the United States Armed Forces. Memorial Day has a rich history and one that’s worth revisiting as the nation prepares to honor the sacrifices made by its military personnel over the centuries. • Freed slaves played a role in the establishment of Memorial Day. The American Civil War is the deadliest military conflict in American history, as the Union and the Confederacy each suffered more than 800,000 casualties by the time the war ended in 1865. According to History.com, as the war drew to a close, hundreds of Union soldiers who were being held as prisoners of war died and were buried in a mass grave in a Confederate prison camp in South Carolina. After the Confederate surrender, more than 1,000 nowfreed slaves honored those recently deceased Union soldiers during a ceremony in which they sang hymns and distributed flowers. The ceremony was
dedicated to the fallen soldiers and served as a precursor to what is now celebrated as Memorial Day. • Confederate soldiers were honored, too. Confederate losses during the Civil War outnumbered Union losses, and those losses were not forgotten by southerners who survived the war. History. com notes that, in 1866, the Georgia-based Ladies Memorial Association, one of many similar organizations to arise in the aftermath of the war, pushed for a day to honor fallen Confederate soldiers. In fact, these efforts are believed to have influenced General John A. Logan. In 1868, General Logan, a Civil War veteran who was then serving as commander-inchief of a group of Union veterans, ordered the decoration of Union graves with flowers on May 30. The day would ultimately be known as “Memorial Day.” • It took a long time for Memorial Day to become a federal holiday. Despite tracing its origins to the immediate aftermath of the Civil War, Memorial Day did not become an official federal holiday until 1971, more than a century after the war ended. This is the same year the holiday was officially designated

The Board of Trustees agreed to adopt a proposal to close the library for the months of July and August. The closure prioritizes patron and staff safety while maximizing construction progress. Now is the time to look over your reading and viewing list! Come in and fill a complimentary tote bag with items, or request curbside pickup for your LML selections. You will have all summer to relax and read, because your items won’t be due back until after Labor Day! But hurry ~ you will want to reserve and check out items before June 15, when staff begins packing up the collection of more than 120,000 items for storage. Although the building will be physically closed, don’t worry, you will find familiar staff faces in some unexpected places throughout the community! The Library partnered with the Lindenhurst Kiwanis Club to place flags on the graves of local veterans interred at Breslau Cemetery. Our “Windows on Wellwood” stained glass is a lasting memorial to our local military personnel. 232 blue and 15 engraved gold stars honor living or deceased veterans. The gold stars, dedicated to those killed in action, are mounted directly on the windows. A special oak cabinet was constructed to house the blue stars. The cabinet, located under three small stained glass windows, is engraved with the motto, “For Those Who Served”.

Legislative Intent. §174-2. Definitions. §174-3. Permit Required. §174-4. Permit Application. §174-5. Standard of Review §174-6. Fees. §174-7. Penalties for offenses. §174-8. Severability.
LEGALS §174-1. Legislative Intent. The Board of Trustees has determined that it is necessary to regulate the distribution and sale of food vendors who operate on a temporary basis at a fixed location that are not otherwise regulated by Chapter 129. Issuance of a permit for persons or organizations engaged in the above-mentioned activities is required for the protection and maintenance of the health, safety and welfare of the inhabitants of the Village. The Board of Trustees finds that this new section is reasonably aimed at achieving this goal and that the governance of the Village will be enhanced by enactment of the regulations set forth in this section. §174-2. Definitions. When used in this Article, the following shall mean: EVENT A single event or activity where food or food samples are distributed to the public, with or without charge, that operates for a period of time not to exceed three (3) consecutive days and not more than twelve (12) days in any particular month. Such event shall be scheduled to occur at a single specified location, where access is controlled by the event’s sponsor, and may be held indoors or outdoors, in public or privately owned or leased premises, and shall include but not be limited to: (1) A street activity, regardless of whether the event requires a permit issued in accordance with the rules of the Village; (2) A business, advertising or media promotion or convention; (3) A celebration; a street or other fair; or (4) A sporting event, carnival, flea market, circus, public exhibition, festival, religious or fraternal organization function, parade or other similar gathering. No permit may exceed a period of one (1) year. The strict application of these conditions may be waived by approval of the Village Board in the case of exceptional circumstances. OPERATOR The permittee or person who owns, operates, manages, controls or is otherwise in charge of a temporary food service establishment providing food services at an event, and who has been issued a permit by the Village Administrator or his designee. SPONSOR The person or organization that organizes, controls and manages the event at which a temporary food service

TEMPORARY FOOD SERVICE ESTABLISHMENT An individual food service establishment operating from a booth, stand, vehicle, or cart, in a fixed public or private, indoor or outdoor location, at an event, where foods are stored, prepared or held for service to the public. A temporary food service establishment shall also mean a person who vends, dispenses or distributes pre-packaged or other nonpotentially hazardous foods from a container or other equipment approved by the Village Administrator or his designee that is carried upon his or her person at an event.

§174-3. Permit Required. It shall be necessary for any individual or organization that wishes to operate as a temporary food establishment to acquire a permit from the Village Administrator or his designee approved by resolution of the Village Board. §174-4. Permit Application. A. Applicants for a license under this chapter shall file an application with the Village Clerk in the form of a sworn affidavit, in duplicate, on a form to be supplied by the Village Clerk, which application shall furnish the following information: (1) The name, address and telephone number of the applicant. (2) The applicant’s place of residence for the past five years. (3) The applicant’s business or employer for the past five years. (4) Two full-face photographs of the applicant taken within 30 days of application and measuring 1 1/2 inches by 1 1/2 inches. (5) Whether or not the applicant has ever been convicted of a felony, misdemeanor or violation of any municipal ordinance, except traffic violations, and, if so, the date, court, ordinance and sentence of the court. (6) Whether the applicant has been previously licensed in any occupation and, if so, when, where and for what period and, if such previous license was ever revoked, the date of revocation and the reason therefor. (7) The name and address of the person, firm or corporation

(14) In the event that any other license or permit shall be required by any other governmental agency in connection with the applicant’s business, the same shall be produced by the applicant, and the Village Clerk shall duly note the same. (15) Any additional information as the Village Clerk shall deem necessary for the purpose of administering the provisions of this chapter. (16) Proof of insurance for a minimum sum of $100,000 for personal injury and property damage suffered by any person as a result of the peddler’s doing business pursuant to a license issued under this chapter. §174-5. Standard of Review. On all applications to the Village Administrator for permits in addition to other specific requirements, the Village Administrator or his designee shall consider the health, safety, convenience and general welfare of the Village. The standards to be considered by the Village Administrator or his designee in making its determination of any matter under this chapter are whether the granting of the permit will be in harmony with the general purpose and intent of the chapter, in accordance with the comprehensive plan

Student Council Sends Sunshine To Seniors

O’Connell Copiague High School Student Council members and leaders, along with adviser Cheryl Feldman, painted and decorated flowerpots and filled them with a variety of spring seed packets as a way to remind local senior citizens they are never forgotten. “We wanted to share some springtime sunshine with loving members of our schools community,”
Ms. Feldman said. “The students purchased their own supplies and used their own artistic expression to make a spring flowerpot adorned with inspirational words and springtime painted pictures. We knew so many of our elderly community members were feeling isolated and alone due to restrictions enforced during the pandemic. As a student council, we felt it was important to show our
seniors that they are never forgotten.” The flowerpots were delivered to The Dominican Village Assisted Living Facility in North Amityville and will be distributed to the residents who live there. Student council members are happy to serve the community in creative ways and eager to bring joy to the lives of others.

Lindenhurst Senior Commits To Serve Students Connecting During ‘Class Wars’ Lindenhurst High School senior Eric Gollinge has recently been appointed to the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point. USMMA is one of the five federal service academies. Graduates of the academy are leaders of exemplary character who are committed to serve the national security, marine transportation, and economic needs of the United States as licensed Merchant Marine Officers and commissioned officers in the Armed Forces. In order to be considered for appointment to the academy, a candidate must receive a nomination from a New York State Senator, in addition to being academically and physically qualified and demonstrate good moral character. New York Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand provided Eric with the personal nomination he needed to be considered for appointments. Throughout his tenure at Lindenhurst, Eric has maintained a high grade-point-average, challenging himself with Advanced Placement and College Level courses, in addition to participating in numerous extra-curricular activities. Eric has worked extremely hard to get to this point and is ready to represent Lindenhurst during this next phase of his life at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy as a member of the Class of 2025. The district congratulates him on this achievement.

each group. The students design T-shirts to be worn during these competitions. This year, in an effort to bring the students together, seniors Patrick Williams and Ava Savinetti created an interactive shirt for the
members of the senior class to wear. The shirt contained the Spotify logo and a scan code that led to a Spotify playlist of songs that represent various moments of their high school experience.
