The Charity of The Month for May is: Guardians of Rescue

A lot of these veterans suffered for many years, all of which now have lifelong disabilities due to their service to our country. Paws of War feels that at the very least they can bring them pet food to give them a helping hand during these tough times. Additionally, Paws of War has partnered with Cambridge Catering, who is providing hot cooked meals free of charge to our veterans. Hank, a Smithtown resident and veteran, was someone that Paws of War helped. When they arrived at his home, they noticed a his two very proud flags were destroyed. They handed off the pet food and trays of hot food that Cambridge Catering has provided, but they didn’t stop there. They then went to the hardware store and purchased everything to fix and replace his flags. Guardians of Rescue and Paws of War can both use your support so they can continue to help others. However, Paws of War will at times arrive at their homes with no warning, knock on their door and tell them that they have some items to drop off for them. “You always see that tear in their eye” says Robert. “That someone actually cares enough to come to their home and bring them something is very special.”

Guardians of Rescue is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. Their mission is to facilitate and foster programs and activities that further the unique benefits of interaction between people and animals. We are all aware of the toll that this pandemic is having on people, yet the impacts are being felt beyond humans. Animals are also being impacted in numerous ways by this situation. Guardians of Rescue has been dealing with the Covid Crisis in many different ways, such as helping people feed their pets and taking on the responsibility to care for homeless animals. They have even stepped out of their realm of helping animals to assist seniors during these trying times. They are overwhelmed by the amount of assistance needed and their phones are ringing non-stop. So many people have had their employment impacted by the virus, therefore donations have been down. This makes it difficult for them to continue feeding the animals, building doghouses, taking in new rescues and trying to cover all their expenses. “The pandemic has created a host of problem for the animals,” says Robert Misseri, President of this organization. “I hope that we can make it through this difficult time, so that we can continue to help the animals in need.” Robert is also the President of Paws of War, another non-profit right here on Long Island. This organization trains and places shelter dogs to serve and provide independence to our U.S. military veterans that suffer from the emotional effects of war. In turn, each veteran can experience the therapeutic and unconditional love only a companion animal can bring. Throughout this pandemic, they have been tending to the most at risk veterans. They find that their older senior veterans typically are very prideful and refuse to ask for any handouts. Many live alone and

• On June 14, 1777, the Second Continental Congress proposed and passed the Flag Act of 1777. This resolution was designed to facilitate the creation of an official flag for a nation that was aiming to earn its independence from Great Britain. The flag was to have thirteen stripes, alternating red and white, with thirteen white stars on a blue field. The thirteen stars signified the original members of the Union.

We will continue to follow the lead of the Executive Orders of our Governor. As I write this, Newsday reports that there are now 571 people in Lindenhurst Village with the Coronavirus. I continue to pray for each and every one of them for a speedy recovery, as well as for those mourning loved ones; family and friends who have been taken from us too soon from this virus. The curve continues to flatten, but it is still so important to remain vigilant. On a sad note, this year’s Lindenhurst Memorial Day

Parade, sponsored by the United Veterans Council, has been cancelled. Although we will miss the pomp and pageantry of the parade, there are still many ways that our Lindenhurst Community can show our respect and support for the veterans and fallen heroes of our country. I suggest you hang an American flag, or raise one out on your lawn. You can make signs that say a word of thanks for our veterans, and place them in your window or post them on your lawn. On another regretful note, based on an abundance of caution, the Village Board has decided to cancel this year’s Summer Youth Recreation Program at Village Park. With recent revelations concerning the Coronavirus showing up in children, I would be heartbroken if any of our

Lindenhurst youth got sick while attending the camp. During this uncertain and stressful time, please remember to slow down and remain positive. We will get back to some sort of normalcy very soon. We have come a long way, but we still have a little more to go. A new day is dawning. In the meantime, not only practice self-care, but please remember to be kind to one another. Small acts of kindness are big acts of love for those in need. Please look out for your neighbors, especially those who are most vulnerable. Many of our neighbors need emotional support and love. We are blessed to live in our caring, connected Lindenhurst Community. We are Lindenhurst Strong. We will get through this together. Stay safe and be well.

We Salute Our Hometown Heroes The Kiwanis Club of Lindenhurst is launching its Hometown Heroes Banner program this Memorial Day to honor veterans from our community. The program is a grass roots opportunity for the community to honor service men and women with a banner showing their picture, years and branch of service, name and rank. Banners will be displayed along Wellwood Ave., Lindenhurst Village’s main street. A portion of the proceeds will go to one of three veterans’ organizations of the families’ choosing.

Tom Baumann, who served in the Marine Corps and whose business, Turtle Graphx is a club member, is printing the banners from his Lindenhurst shop. “It’s been a lot of work but I feel really good about doing it because being a veteran myself I know how much this means to somebody who has served,” he said. Members of the club recently installed its first Hometown Heroes banner in front of Lindenhurst Village Hall honoring Capt. Arthur M. Cromarty who served with distinction in the U.S. Army Air Corps

during World War II and is also a founding member of the Kiwanis Club of Lindenhurst, former Lindenhurst Village Attorney, Babylon Town Supervisor and one of New York’s longest serving Supreme Court Justices after whom the court complex in Riverhead is named. And he is Lindenhurst Kiwanis CoPresident Alice Cromarty’s dad! Over 150 banners will be hung along Wellwood Avenue in time for Memorial Day.
