Champions Recognized Lindenhurst Middle School students were honored during the recent April Breakfast for Champions celebration coordinated by middle school educator Kathy Curran. Held at the Lindencrest Diner, the breakfast, now in its 20th year, identifies students who exemplify Lindy Pride at the middle school. Students are nominated by teachers for

a variety of reasons and are recognized publically in front of proud parents, teachers and peers. With proud parents and teachers looking on, students received their certificates of merit from Principal Frank Naccarato who told them how they each have a tremendous amount of power. “These are the students that other students strive to be like. We are proud

to recognize them today but even more proud to have them represent the Lindenhurst Middle School and Lindy Pride,” he said. Our Lindenhurst Pride Girls U [Under] 13 Travel Team volunteered many hours towards collecting soccer equipment for children of the Congo in Africa. Father Ignace from Our Lady of Perpetual Help spends most of each year preaching at the Church in the Congo and when he returns to NY it is only for a brief visit. This year the Pride team was able to collect, bag and prepare the following for shipping: • 48 pairs of shoes • 22 sets of shin guards • 17 soccer balls • 3 basketballs • 2 pairs of goalie gloves • 48 pairs of yellow Christina Renna laces This effort was led by Coach Erik Haughn [Coach on right side of the team in the picture], who not only volunteered to coach and train this brand new Lindy Pride Travel team this season but is also a Coach for 7th Grade Girls and a

Special Education Teacher in our Lindenhurst School District. The entire team learned the values of volunteering to help less privileged children. In the Congo, many young people struggle with substance

Anyone for Dessert? and remarked, “Oh yeah, that happens a lot - summer and all.” No offer of a replacement, no sympathy for the ruined meal, no nothing. The customer is always right, indeed. Of course, there are times when the customer seems obliged to seat him/herself, place the order and perhaps even head back into the kitchen to cook it as well, such is the poor quality of service. On the other end of the spectrum, I’ve been witness to a waitress literally sweeping a plate out from under my friend’s poised fork, determining that she was, in fact, finished. As we sat, incredulous over this turn of events, we didn’t know whether to laugh or demand a refund. After about two hours of nursing our drinks and “contemplating” dessert, more appetizers, perhaps a breakfast course… we decided to take the check. Oddly enough, the waitress didn’t seem amused. Fast forward to this past Cinco de Mayo, a “holiday” I have never made a special point to celebrate

aside from perhaps ordering a taco or two at a take-out restaurant. This year, my friend and I (different friend, same Candid Camera tendencies) decided to wait it out to dine in style at a genuine Mexican establishment on the busiest Saturday night of the year. After about an hour, we were seated. We ordered drinks, appetizers and entrees, all of which arrived in quick succession. Having already decided what we wanted for dessert, we patiently waited for the waiter to return. And waited…. And waited… Each time he passed our table, all attempts to make eye contact and flag him down went unnoticed. We were, we determined, completely invisible. Nearly an hour later, a random waitress happened to glance our way. Can we order dessert from you? Certainly. Nearly another 30 minutes elapsed before our own waiter, the one who had seemingly abandoned our table, returned. Dessert? We looked at each other. We had now been in this venue for precisely four hours. Cheers, indeed.

with Jamie Lynn Ryan I have had my fair share of dining adventures through the years, most of which have since been reflected upon with a degree of amusement in hindsight. At the time, however, well let’s just say there are moments when our entire eating experience seemed to be part of a rather lengthy segment of Candid Camera. There was the time, while up in Saratoga Springs one summer years ago, that our meal was interrupted by a rather persistent fly. Upon swatting said flying creature, he began a free-fall into what had been - up to that point - a rather enjoyable pasta entree of my mother’s. As she watched, horrified, the formerly agile winged critter began what appeared to be a slow dog paddle through the sauce. Both my father and I were in complete hysterics by this point. When the waiter stopped by the table to check on whether we were enjoying the meal, my mother pointed to the at this point - motionless fly and replied, “Well, I was enjoying it very much, but…” The waiter, without missing a beat, shrugged

The United Veterans Council of Lindenhurst will hold a parade on May 28th. All units will assemble at 8 a.m. at Breslau Cemetery and march in the cemetery, where services will be held. The parade will continue on Newark Street to North Delaware Avenue, then turn south to Hartford Street and proceed west to Firemen’s Park. There, the Lindenhurst Fire Department will join in the parade. At North Wellwood Avenue, the procession will turn left and proceed south to the Village Plaza where the WWI monument stands. The group at Gary and Freeman Street will join, along with the scouts and other organizations. At the Plaza, a memorial service will be held, followed by a continuation along South Wellwood Avenue to the Village Hall, where there will be a reviewing platform. There, several guest speakers will be present and services will be concluded. Please note: All veterans can join the parade at any point and fit in with the procession. In the event of inclement weather, all services at the cemetery, plaza and village hall will be cancelled, except for the wreath and flag details, which will perform their assigned duties at their respective stations. All units will assemble at the Lindenhurst Middle School at 10 a.m. Memorial services will then be conducted in the auditorium. Community Crisis Workshop On Wednesday, May 16th, the Lindenhurst Union Free School District invites members of the community to a crisis preparedness workshop, hosted by Detective Clifford Lent of Homeland Security and Criminal Intelligence Bureau. The Lindenhurst Union Free School District’s department of fine and performing arts recently presented its annual AllLindy Concert at the Lindenhurst High School auditorium. To kick off the evening, teacher Andrew Kuftack directed the All-Lindy Jazz Band as they performed Duke Ellington and Irving Mills’ “It Don’t Mean a Thing,” Dean Sorenson’s “Please Don’t Climb on the Iguana” and “Tunes From ‘Toons” arranged by Roy Phillippe. Paul Cronin then led the All-Lindy Orchestra, as they performed Elliot del Borgo’s “Country Cookin,” Bracket and Harman’s “Simple Gifts” and Neal Hefti’ “Batman Theme” arranged by Bob Cerulli. The All-Lindy chorus was led by director Philip Ricciardi and accompanied by Yen Yen Haas. The group serenaded the crowd with several entertaining selections including the “Revolting Children” from Matilda the Musical written by Tim Minchin. The All-Lindy band, under the direction of Samantha Stainkamp, took to the stage with performances of “Imperium” by Michael Sweeney and “As the Eagle Flies” by James Swearingen among others that left the audiences wanting more..

Lisa Gatti is the CEO & Founder of PalO-Mine Equestrian, Inc., a comprehensive therapeutic equine program that uses horses to facilitate growth, learning and healing for individuals with disabilities and for other vulnerable populations. Through persistence, hard work and a passion to serve others, Lisa opened Pal-O-Mine in 1995 as a 501(C)(3) non-profit. Pal-O-Mine grew from having two programs, eight horses and 80 students per week to 11 programs, 25 horses and 400 students per week - and they continue to grow today! This organization sits on eight acres, with a 20-stall barn, handicapped accessible bathrooms, a new 100’ x 120’ indoor arena with state-of- theart footing and a rider hoisting system, and three outdoor riding arenas. They help an unbelievable amount of people, and their work is truly heartwarming. Individuals of all ages are welcome to take part in the programs they offer. They operate with five full-time employees, 35 independent contractors and 80 volunteers a week. Their riding instructors have experience with the following diagnoses: Autism Spectrum Disorders, Anxiety Disorders, Sensory Processing Disorder, Attention Deficit Disorder, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Neurological Disorders, Cerebral Palsy, Traumatic Brain Injury, Multiple Sclerosis, Down Syndrome, Spina Bifida, Genetic Disorders and Emotional Disturbances. Every day, they have a different school

drop off children at their location to benefit from their organization; they also offer group programs, individual lessons, corporate workshops and a program specifically designed for military members. Volunteers are the backbone of PalO-Mine, and there are many different ways to get involved. Some ways you may volunteer are: working directly with children and adults in lessons, working with therapy horses and performing barn chores, fundraising, and helping with property enhancement and landscaping. Pal-O-Mine has two major fundraising events that are coming up in June. One is their 16th annual “Day at the Races,” which will be on June 8th at Belmont Racetrack. This is held the day before the Belmont Stakes and is a wonderful outing, offering lunch, a premium open bar and door prizes. Their 10th annual Golf Outing, “Par Fore the Horse,” will be held on June 25th at Southward Ho Country Club in Bay Shore. This will include golfing, brunch, course refreshments, an open bar, cocktail hour, dinner, gifts and prizes. www.GOTRLongIsland.org Girls on the Run is an empowerment program for girls in third through eighth grade that inspires them to be joyful, healthy and confident, while using a fun, interactive curriculum that creatively integrates running. Meeting twice a week in small teams for the 10-week season, volunteer coaches teach girls life skills through engaging lessons and fun movement activities. At each season’s conclusion, all girls from teams across Long Island meet up for a celebratory 5K running event. Their Spring 5K will take place on June 2nd at Hofstra University. They are in need of volunteer coaches (no running experience is required) who have a desire to make an impact on the lives of young girls. All training is provided. They also need volunteers to help out at their upcoming 5K in the areas of: registration, hospitality, pre-run fun and course cheer. Required Qualifications and Skills: • Experience in alarm systems, security products, locking products, access control or video. • Some experience in help desk, technical support, customer service or telephone support is desirable. • Good computer literacy, including MS Windows-based systems and basic networking experience (i.e. understanding of routers, switches, TCP/IP, etc.) • Extremely detail oriented, possess a high sense of urgency and demonstrate world class follow through skills. • Customer service oriented, ‘people person’ with great communication skills (verbal and written). • ‘Team Player’ with ability to work both individually and collaboratively. • Able to work on site within the hours of 8:30 AM to 8:00 PM, Monday through Friday (full 8.5 hour shifts). • Fluency in Spanish is a plus, although not required.
