Just Kids, located at the Kellum Street School, is offering limited scholarships for general education children residing within the Lindenhurst School District to attend their preschool program beginning September 2018. Three-year-old classes will meet either from 8:30-11 a.m. (morning session) or 12-2:30 p.m. (afternoon session). Four-year-old classes will be held during those time periods as well, however, there will also be a full-day 4-year-old program from 8:30 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. Please note that snacks/ lunch will NOT be provided to the students and will be the responsibility of the parents. Parents must also provide transportation. Proof of residency must be provided to Just Kids upon acceptance into the program. Lindy Eagle Scout Suffolk County Legislature Presiding Officer DuWayne Gregory was on hand to congratulate and present a proclamation to Lindenhurst resident Greyson D. Sladic at his Eagle Scout award ceremony, held Friday, April 27th at Our Lady of Grace Church in West Babylon. Greyson is a member of Boy Scout

Troop 284, based in Copiague. Eagle Scout is the highest rank in the Boy Scouts of America scouting program. With this achievement, Greyson is among the small percentage of young men in the Boy Scouts of America who have reached this prestigious level. Since the inception of the Eagle Scout award in 1912,

only about two percent of eligible Scouts have earned this honor. For his Eagle Scout project, Greyson designed and constructed a park bench, pavers, and flower beds at Weckerle Park in Lindenhurst for visitors to have a comfortable place to sit and enjoy the park. The project took 105 working hours to complete.

’Tis time for a bit of this and that, a collection of random thoughts and musings collected over time and compiled for your reading pleasure - or displeasure, as the case may be. But seriously, I do hope you’ll indulge this meandering assortment of musings. How about this weather? After waiting for what has seemed like months for spring to arrive - oh, wait… - it appears the season of growth has finally taken up residence over the shores of Long Island. Some might even go so far as to say time has fast forwarded right into summer; but we can be sure to experience a few more chilly days before it’s safe to put the jackets away for good. ’Til then, best to keep those flip flops on stand-by. There will be plenty of time for bare feet and bathing suits in the months to come. In the meantime, the trees have begun to explode with blossoms, and everyone is busy sprucing up their gardens - or, in my case, balcony - with the latest annuals. Year after year, I am struck by

all the pretty perennials at the nursery, and wind up purchasing far too many tulips, daffodils and hyacinths for someone who has nowhere for them to permanently reside. This year, I “scaled back” the floral collection; but still, as we speak, several tulip plants have already bloomed past their expiration and are in desperate need of a home for the offseason. What can I say? I’m a sucker for spring. I tend to have the same unhealthy obsession when it comes to indoor decor, as I have amassed quite the array of seasonal knick knacks, wreaths and doormats. As soon as the months transition, there I am, back up on the step stool, peering into the infamous “Christmas Closet” for signs of the many spring, summer and autumn accents I have accumulated over the last five years. Back in March, I realized that, with the exception of Easter decorations, I am seriously lacking in anything not resembling a bunny, chick or egg. Were my apartment able to hold one more thing, I’d say it was time

for a small spring shopping spree; but alas, it cannot. Well… maybe just one more thing. Speaking of decor, my little finned friend, Norton von Spudley - “Spud,” “Norty,” “Baby Betta Extraordinaire” - seems to be flourishing in his bowl on my desk at home, nestled under “his” desk lamp and next to a rather striking likeness of himself in the form of a blown glass ornament. Often, I find him staring intently at the little turquoise fish in the hand-painted ball, as if pleading with it to come out and play. Nearly 18 monthsold, my Norty seems to be enjoying his time as my companion, which he expresses daily by trying to devour my finger as I sprinkle crushed pellets into his bowl. Table manners are not a strong point. And that’s the way it stands in this second week of May, hovering on the brink of summer while shaking off the winter doldrums that have engrossed us for the last several months - the happy medium, if you will, of weather. Enjoy it while it lasts. This, too, shall pass.

The Fire Island Lighthouse Preservation Society will present the following: Plein Air Art Studio Friday and Saturday, May 25th and 26th Artists from Wet Paints Studio Group will be painting on site in the Lighthouse area. All artwork will be on display until June 11th and for sale, with 30% of the proceeds being donated to the Preservation Society by the artist. *** Horseshoe Crab Program Saturday, June 2nd, at 7 p.m. Learn about horseshoe crabs and watch them come ashore to lay their eggs while reveling in the beauty of the evening at the beach. There is a suggested donation of $2 per person. *** Light Keepers Behind the Scenes Tour Saturday, June 9th, at 9 a.m. Follow one of the presentday Lighthouse Keepers on his rounds. This bottom to top tour takes you from the auxiliary generator and the Light Keepers workshop in the basement of the Keeper’s Quarters to the beacon in the lantern room of the lighthouse tower. Includes a tour of the Lens Building, which houses the original first order Fresnel Lens, and the Boat House. Tour takes approximately 2-1/2 hours. May’s Charity of the Month is:

Lisa Gatti is the CEO & Founder of PalO-Mine Equestrian, Inc., a comprehensive therapeutic equine program that uses horses to facilitate growth, learning and healing for individuals with disabilities and for other vulnerable populations. Through persistence, hard work and a passion to serve others, Lisa opened Pal-O-Mine in 1995 as a 501(C)(3) non-profit. Pal-O-Mine grew from having two programs, eight horses and 80 students per week to 11 programs, 25 horses and 400 students per week - and they continue to grow today! This organization sits on eight acres, with a 20-stall barn, handicapped accessible bathrooms, a new 100’ x 120’ indoor arena with state-of- theart footing and a rider hoisting system, and three outdoor riding arenas. They help an unbelievable amount of people, and their work is truly heartwarming. Individuals of all ages are welcome to take part in the programs they offer. They operate with five full-time employees, 35 independent contractors and 80 volunteers a week. Their riding instructors have experience with the following diagnoses: Autism Spectrum Disorders, Anxiety Disorders, Sensory Processing Disorder, Attention Deficit Disorder, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Neurological Disorders, Cerebral Palsy,

Traumatic Brain Injury, Multiple Sclerosis, Down Syndrome, Spina Bifida, Genetic Disorders and Emotional Disturbances. Every day, they have a different school drop off children at their location to benefit from their organization; they also offer group programs, individual lessons, corporate workshops and a program specifically designed for military members. Volunteers are the backbone of PalO-Mine, and there are many different ways to get involved. All volunteers must be at least 16 years of age, attend a volunteer orientation (orientations are held monthly), complete a training program and be available to volunteer a minimum of four hours per week. Some ways you may volunteer are: working directly with children and adults in lessons, working with therapy horses and performing barn chores, fundraising, and helping with property enhancement and landscaping. Pal-O-Mine features a Wish List on their website, which lists items they use every day that you can donate! Flat Stanley Tours Kindergarten students in Caren Steiger’s class at Great Neck Road Elementary School in the Copiague School District had the chance to show off all their favorite parts of their elementary school on May 1st. Flat Stanley, who arrived recently from a school in Moravia, New York, was given a guided

tour of the building by the kindergartners. After connecting with the school in upstate New York, the Great Neck Road students sent their Flat Stanley to their partner school and received the other school’s Flat Stanley in return. Flat Stanley, who is the title character in a series of books, met

and toured the principal’s office, cafeteria, and nurse’s office and even had some fun on the playground. In the upcoming weeks, the class will have a video conference with the partner school and explore the similarities and differences between the schools and communities.

The Wade-Burns Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7279 recently recognized several students from the Lindenhurst Union Free School District for their written contributions to the 2017-2018 VFW Voice of Democracy Essay Contests. The student essays reﬂected the

themes, “America, Our Hope for the Future.” A ceremony was held at the VFW Post in Lindenhurst honoring the students. Local politicians attended the event to applaud the students’ efforts as students were awarded with medals, certificates and monetary awards.

Lindenhurst High School students Jack Burton and Efrain Laguna took second and third place, respectively, for the 2017-2018 Voice of Democracy competition. The district congratulates all of these patriotic students.

O’Connell Copiague High School held its second annual voice to voice empowerment session in the school’s library on April 25th. The mission of the initiative is to motivate and empower one another through teamwork and conversation. It was developed to provide opportunities for young women to gain awareness of their individual and collection skills, experiences and

O’Connell Copiague High School administrative assistant Jeanette Tobar-Garcia. Tobar-Garcia spoke to the students about her upbringing, her struggles
