Stamp Out Hunger Island Harvest Food Bank is once again teaming up with the National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) and the United States Postal Service (USPS) for the 26th annual Stamp Out Hunger campaign on Saturday, May 12th. As the nation’s largest single-day food 9.875 drive, x postal 5.437carriers across the country will collect nonperishable food items donated by generous postal customers. On Long Island, all food collected

will help Island Harvest Food Bank to provide supplemental food support to more than 300,000 Long Islanders who are at risk of hunger and food insecurity. “Participating in Stamp Out Hunger is easy,” says Randi Shubin Dresner, president and CEO of Island Harvest Food Bank. “Simply leave nonperishable food items in a bag next to your mailbox before your regularly scheduled mail

delivery on Saturday, May 12th, and your USPS letter carrier will do the rest.” Nonperishable food items needed include canned goods, cereal, pasta, rice, boxed juices and shelf-stable milk (please, no glass items). All food donated on Long Island will help replenish Island Harvest Food Bank’s network of food pantries, soup kitchens and other emergency feeding programs in Nassau and Suffolk counties.

“Every donation, no matter how small, helps our neighbors who are struggling to put food on their tables,” said Randi Shubin Dresner. “The National Association of Letter Carriers is pleased to partner with Island Harvest Food Bank and support its efforts in addressing the problem of hunger on Long Island,” said Walter Barton, president, NALC Branch 6000. “Our Letter Carriers often see the

need for food assistance firsthand as part of their daily rounds, and we’re happy to help give back to the community, and provide much-needed food support for the thousands of families affected by hunger here in our local communities.” Since its inception in 1993, Stamp Out Hunger has collected more than 1.5 billion pounds of food nationally to help address the issue of hunger in America. Last year, Stamp

Out Hunger netted 71 million pounds of food in 10,000 cities and towns, and in all 50 states plus the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, Guam and the U.S. Virgin Islands. In 2017, Long Islanders donated 268,582 pounds of food to Stamp Out Hunger, which supplemented 223,818 meals. Big Bird The largest living bird is the ostrich, which can weigh 330 pounds.

Sheriff Appointed Suffolk County Sheriff Errol D. Toulon, Jr. has been appointed as the Executive Director of the Suffolk County Criminal Justice Coordinating Council (CJCC) by County Executive Steve Bellone. In this role, Sheriff Toulon will help direct the County’s criminal justice policy and work to enhance collaboration among government, law enforcement and nonprofit agency partners. Since taking Office in January, Sheriff Toulon has focused significant attention on better utilizing data and analysis to improve the internal operations of the Sheriff’s Office and to enhance intelligence resources aimed at fighting the opioid epidemic and dismantling criminal gang networks. He has also pledged to enhance prevention programs designed to break the “school to prison pipeline.”

ART PROJECT ROCKS - Great Neck Road Elementary School in the Copiague School District is coming together for a schoolwide recycled art project. During the first weeks in April, students are painting a rock to resemble a fish during their respective art classes. Inspired by the book “Only One You” by Linda Kranz, Great Neck Road art teacher Meghan Haughney tasked each of the students with creating their own fish-look rocks. Lindenhurst Union Free School District faculty and staff hit the courts in an effort to raise money for pediatric cancer. During the fourth annual “Battle of the Schools, Teachers Spiking out Cancer” volleyball tournament organized by middle school reading specialist Kelly Bardak and held at the Lindenhurst High School, teachers,

administrators and staff competed against each other, much to the enjoyment of the community of spectators. The annual event benefits the Christina Renna Foundation. Christina Renna was a young Lindenhurst student who, sadly, lost her battle with cancer. Christina was a member of the girls varsity track

team when Bardak was the assistant coach. This year, the fundraiser generated $2,870. This was the first year to include a team comprised of Lindenhurst alumni. That team competed against the middle school team to earn the title of champion. The final score was 25-19.

13 Triskaidekaphobia: fear of the number 13 I’ve known many people with an aversion to this perceived “unlucky” number, whether serving as a date of particular significance or - the more common superstition - when it should happen to fall on a Friday, of all days. Personally, I’ve taken special care to note any particularly negative occurrences on these infrequent juxtapositions of day and date, with thankfully few to report. Just another day, as they say. And with that, today - May 2nd - I commemorate the 13th anniversary of my start date here at South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers. Over one dozen years ago, I began my journey into the world of journalism, straight from college. At the time, thirteen years would have certainly seemed like an eternity to spend in any one establishment. Think about

it - even school, which often seems like an infinite chunk of time, is divided into segments of elementary, junior high and senior high. College, if it follows, is usually segmented into four-year intervals. Thirteen years… well that’s an entirely different level of commitment, is it not? And yet, even in the workforce, time tends to separate into stages. It begins with the formative years of finding your footing in a particular field, still unsure of what the job entails and what your responsibilities will include. Everything is new and exciting as you realize - hey, I’m really doing this! These are followed by the years of transition, when positions may be altered, new projects will come and go, and you begin to discover your particular strengths and weaknesses en route to finding your true passion. Thirteen years in, and I

am still in the process of realizing those aspects of the vast field of journalism which really inspire me. I am open to learn, eager to explore and always looking to improve upon those skills I originally honed all those decades ago. I believe this process is never complete; those who have worked in a particular field for twice as long as I have can surely attest to this fact. Who’s to say that anyone has to stay with one particular venture for a lifetime anyway? The world is constantly evolving, as are we; and the nature of most careers tends to necessitate a versatility that didn’t always exist prior. We all have untapped skills to be utilized, curiosities to indulge and talents to cultivate. So, here’s to 13, a number like any other, if you ask me. May it signify all the experience gained thus far, and the adventures yet to unfold.

It all started with a good book... As I sat down with Lisa Gatti, CEO & Founder of Pal-O-Mine Equestrian, Inc., I had the privilege to learn about what her organization does to help those in need, as well as how it all began. PalO-Mine Equestrian is a comprehensive therapeutic equine program that uses horses to facilitate growth, learning and healing for individuals with disabilities and for other vulnerable populations. Lisa’s mother was a special education teacher and her father worked for a book publishing company. She was greatly influenced by both of their professions. Lisa grew up knowing she loved horses, but she really wanted to become a teacher and work with children in need. Her father would often send her books while she was away at college, and one day she received a book titled Palomino, by Danielle Steel. As she read through the pages, she became inspired by what was written about: a ranch that was formed to help people through equine therapy. From that point on, she was certain that was exactly what she wanted to do with her life. Through persistence, hard work and a passion to serve others, Lisa Gatti opened Pal-O-Mine in 1995 as a 501(C)(3) non-profit. Pal-O-Mine grew from having two programs, eight horses and 80 students per week to 11 programs, 25 horses and 400 students per week - and they continue to grow today! This organization sits on eight acres, with a 20-stall barn, handicapped accessible bathrooms, a new 100’ x 120’ indoor arena with state-ofthe-art footing and a rider hoisting system, and three outdoor riding arenas. They help an unbelievable amount of people, and their work is truly heartwarming. Individuals of all ages are welcome to take part in the programs they offer. They operate with five full-time employees, 35 independent contractors and 80 volunteers a week. Their riding instructors have experience with the following diagnoses: Autism Spectrum Disorders, Anxiety Disorders, Sensory Processing Disorder, Attention Deficit Disorder, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Neurological Disorders, Cerebral Palsy,

Traumatic Brain Injury, Multiple Sclerosis, Down Syndrome, Spina Bifida, Genetic Disorders and Emotional Disturbances. Every day, they have a different school drop off children at their location to benefit from their organization; they also offer group programs, individual lessons, corporate workshops and a program specifically designed for military members. If you are someone who faces any sort of disability or an emotional or vulnerable problem, please visit their website to learn more about how they can help you - and don’t hesitate to get help! Volunteers are the backbone of PalO-Mine, and there are many different ways to get involved. All volunteers must be at least 16 years of age, attend a volunteer orientation (orientations are held monthly), complete a training program and be available to volunteer a minimum of four hours per week. Some ways you may volunteer are: working directly with children and adults in lessons, working with therapy horses and performing barn chores, fundraising, and helping with property enhancement and landscaping. Pal-O-Mine has two major fundraising events that are coming up in June. One is their 16th annual Day at the Races, which will be on June 8th at the Belmont Race Track. This is held the day before the Belmont Stakes and is a wonderful outing, offering lunch, a premium open bar and door prizes. Their 10th annual Golf Outing, Par Fore the Horse, will be held on June 25th at Southward Ho Country Club in Bay Shore. This will include golfing, brunch, course refreshments, an open bar, a cocktail hour, dinner, gifts and prizes. Both of these events have sponsorship opportunities and are open to the public (tickets must be purchased). Lastly, Pal-O-Mine features a Wish List on their website, which lists items they use every day that you can donate! The Wade-Burns Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7279 recently recognized several students from the Lindenhurst Union Free School District for their written contributions to the 2017-2018 VFW Voice of Democracy Essay Contests. The student essays reflected the

themes, “America, Our Hope for the Future.” A ceremony was held at the VFW Post in Lindenhurst honoring the students. Local politicians attended the event to applaud the students’ efforts as students were awarded with medals, certificates and monetary awards.

Lindenhurst High School students Jack Burton and Efrain Laguna took second and third place, respectively, for the 2017-2018 Voice of Democracy competition. The district congratulates all of these patriotic students.

POPs Concert Showcasing songs throughout the decades, Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School presented its annual POPs concert in the auditorium on April 18th. The Madrigal Singers, lead by choral director Gina Occhiogrosso, kicked off the show with an evolution of music through the years. Jonah Ramdas performed “September” by Earth, Wind and Fire and was followed by the duo of Kyree Scott and Kaitlyn Besse showcasing Elton John’s “Don’t Go Breaking My Heart.” Ladrea Buffaloe and Kayla Urban took to the stage for Sia’s rendition of “You’re Never Fully Dressed Without a Smile.” Darley Senat sang Demi Lovato’s “Tell Me You Love Me” and was followed by

Jamila Jackson with Kevin Gates’ “Satellites.” “Walking on Sunshine” by Katrina & The Waves got the audience on their feet, performed by Jessica Chochorek, Liana Daubel, Aryana Arias, Ariano Tirino and Shannon Greenlee. Nicholas Favichia gave a heartfelt performance of Gavin DeGraw’s “Not Over You,” followed by Kayla Dixon’s soulful version of “Praying” by Kesha. Closing out the first half of the show was Montell Jordan’s “This Is How We Do It” performed by James Holland. Elenys Diaz and Yaderson Espinal showcased their musical talent with Ben E. King’s “Stand By Me,” and Kyree Scott again took the stage for “Love Me Now” by John Legend. Samantha

Sloane performed the 21 Pilots version of “Can’t Help Falling in Love” and Jillian Payne belted out Florence and the Machine’s “Dog Days Are Over.” Nicholas Favichia, Kyree Scott, Oktay Yildiz, Kevin Buffalino and Jonah Ramdas showcased Billy Joel’s “The Longest Time.” Solo performances included Jonathan Angel with DJ Snake’s “Let Me Love You;” Taylor SharpeAdams with Sam Smith’s “The Writing’s on the Wall;” Andrew Szabo with Frank Sinatra’s “That’s Life;” and Elenys Diaz with James Brown’s “This Is a Man’s World.” The Madrigal Singers and chorus closed the show with a powerful version of Michael Jackson’s “Man in the Mirror.”

Designated Agent Form

The designated agent form is one of the most important pieces of paperwork in the funeral process. This form is filled out before the deceased has passed away, designating one person to take care of the funeral arrangements. Most people believe that documents such as health care proxy or power of attorney take care of these measures and give the named person power to make funeral arrangements. This is a common misconception. These documents are null and void when the deceased person has passed on. The right of funeral arrangements would then pass to the closest next of kin, and in the case of multiple children gets evenly distributed. The designated agent form resolves this issue by signifying one person (kin or not) to take care of the arrangements. This is most helpful in situations with cremation, where a person passes away having multiple children spread across the country. In cremation, signatures are needed from all children in order to have the process completed. If one person objects, cremation cannot be done. With the designated agent form, only one signature is needed from the designated person. This makes the arrangement process go much smoother. To some parents it is worse than the discussion about the “birds and the bees” they had with their children 40 years ago. An open discussion with our children about your wishes after you pass away is a tremendous benefit to you and your children. A family discussion will avert the tragic situation that happened when Ted Williams died several months ago. My philosophy has been, the funeral is more for the survivors than for the deceased. I recently spoke with a woman who did not want her children to be bothered when she died. She wanted to pay for a direct cremation without any services or viewing and she did not want to discuss it with her children. She wanted to make sure that she would be cremated before her children could get here from out of state. I suggested she first discuss this matter with her children. She said it was only her decision. I then asked her what she would do if heaven forbid one of her children died and if they were cremated before she could say good-bye. She simply said she would never talk to her daughter or son in laws again. She then looked at me, picked up the papers, put them in her pocketbook and said I will be back after I discuss this matter with all my children. Some people do not ever wish to see the person after they die. They want to remember the person alive. Some people need the opportunity for closure and need to view their loved one before interment or cremation. Whatever your wishes are, I simply ask you discuss the matter with those who will suffer most after you are gone. Remember the funeral is more for them than it is for you.
