Contractors For Kids (CFK) is a non-profit organization, which was founded for the purpose of providing assistance to families in Long Island communities. Their goal is to assist children and their families overcome obstacles that have unfortunately changed or have impacted their lives through the sickness, injury or death of a child. They are committed to this cause and want to give hope and reassurance for the futures of Long Islanders. CFK was founded in 2005 by Kevin Harney and Alan Nahmias of Stalco Construction. Kevin and Alan, both long-time philanthropists, saw the growing need for financial assistance in our communities and knew that something more needed to be done. Through random acts of kindness, they were slowly changing the lives of others, however they thirsted to make more change so they decided to form this non-profit, Contractors For Kids. Their organization runs on donations only and is volunteer based, they have no employees. One family at a time, they make sure that the financial hardship brought on by sickness, injury or death does not destroy an already hurting family. Whether it is to pay a phone bill or a mortgage payment, they want to be there to help. Since 2005, CFK has given out more than 3 MILLION DOLLARS to help local Long Islanders. Here are some of the areas they’ve helped others financially: Rent, Mortgage Payments, Oil Deliveries, Utility Bills, Food, Transportation To & From Hospitals, Co-Payments, Medications & Funeral Expenses. So how do you qualify to get help? It’s quite simple. If you can prove that you are struggling financially because of the sickness, injury or death of a child, you live on Long Island (in Nassau or Suffolk County), and you have
filled out their Application For Assistance, they will get in touch with you to see how they can be of help! Want to help make a difference? You can do so by learning their mission, spreading awareness, referring families to CFK, distributing handouts/ electronic materials and representing CFK at health fairs, open enrollment or employee meetings. Additionally, on June 14th CFK will be holding their 15th Annual Golf Outing at Woodside Club in Muttontown. This will be a COVID-19 compliant event...all local guidelines will be adhered to! There will be boxed breakfast, beverage carts, a silent auction, raffles, prizes, barbeque and of course, golfing. If you would like to attend as an individual player, in a group of 4 players or you would like to sign-up as a sponsor, you can. However, space is limited. What Is The 50-30-20 Approach? Effective financial strategies vary depending on which stage of life a person is in. For example, a recent college graduate working his or her first professional job will not have the same financial strategy as someone on the cusp of retirement. But one financial strategy that people of all ages can look to for guidance is the 50-30-20 approach. Popularized by United States Senator Elizabeth Warren, the 50-30-20 approach to financial planning can be a valuable resource for anyone trying to develop a budget. The approach is simple yet effective. Under the 5030-20 approach, income is allocated based on this breakdown: · 50 percent of money is spent on needs, including housing costs, health insurance, car payments, and groceries · 30 percent of money is spent on wants, including hobbies, dining out and travel · 20 percent of money is allocated to savings Proponents of the 5030-20 approach note that calculations should be based on after-tax income, or what’s often referred to as “take-home pay.” Professionals with steady paychecks can easily determine their 50-3020 breakdowns by saving a month’s worth of pay stubs and establishing their monthly budget based on what’s coming in. The task can be trickier for self-employed or freelance workers, who may benefit from working with financial planners as they seek to create monthly budgets based on the 50-30-20 approach.

A little over a year ago, by orders of the Governor of the State of New York, the Village of Lindenhurst COVID-19 shutdown plan took effect. Everywhere, the pandemic changed things for us all, right down to the details of daily life. Through it all, however, our residents, our community organizations, our municipal partners -- specifically Suffolk County Legislator Kevin McCaffrey, Town of Babylon Supervisor Richard Schaffer, and our NYS Representatives -along with our Lindenhurst School District, our Lindenhurst and North Lindenhurst Fire Departments, and our hard-working, dedicated
Village employees in the Department of Public Works, Village Hall, and Rainbow Center all pulled together to carry on under unheard of circumstances. As a community, we have persevered. As individuals, we all had to figure out what was the newest “normal”, and held ourselves personally responsible to others, and ourselves, by wearing masks, staying at home in the early days, and then keeping the appropriate social distance. As the pandemic progressed, we came together to look after our neighbors, especially our vulnerable neighbors, delivering masks and hand sanitizer to those in need, and patronizing local
business and restaurants. At Village Hall, Zoom public meetings became the normal with limited access in Village Hall. Our family drive-in movie nights and concerts in Village Square Park required all who attended to adhere to social distancing & safety protocols. These Villagesponsored events replaced traditional entertainment venues, such as live theaters, movie theaters, and concert locations that were forced to close down. It should be noted that during a year in which businesses everywhere were closing daily, an unprecedented 12 new businesses opened up in the Village of Lindenhurst.
The Village recently installed a solar panel system on the roof of Village Hall. The newly installed Village Hall PV system will produce 38,000 kWh per year, which represents 73% existing electrical usage of the building. The solar panel system at
Village Hall, along with the construction of the solar carport at the commuter lot, is part of the Village’s Energy Solutions Project in partnership with Johnson Controls. Trustee Pichichero stated, “As a member of the Village Board, I
strongly support the use of solar and other forms of renewable energy in our community. Solar panels on the roof of Lindenhurst Village Hall benefit all of us with a cleaner and greener environment, along with reducing the carbon footprint.”

Also, our Superintendent of Schools, Administrators, School Board Members, teachers, and staff of the Lindenhurst School District accomplished the almost impossible on a daily basis in keeping education going, and safely, throughout the past year. A thank you to Dan Giordano and the Lindenhurst School District – as well as to our students and parents -- for overcoming such overwhelming challenges. With the arrival of vaccines, there is hopeful light at the end of the tunnel; things are gradually changing. Restaurants and businesses have increased their capacity. The President spoke about July 4th as a target date for mandatory re-opening, a much-needed note of hope and optimism. More and more people are being vaccinated. Things are getting better in our Lindenhurst Community. Life is returning to our new normal. However, we are not quite there yet. I cannot emphasize this enough. Especially as the weather warms, it can be tempting to think we can forget about COVID precautions. We cannot. Many of our residents remain unvaccinated. The potential for spreading the virus to those not yet protected is still a real possibility. Please continue to wear a mask, and maintain a safe distance from others when in public. So, as we reflect on all we have experienced and accomplished together as the Lindenhurst Community since March 2020, I hold in my heart all those who have passed on due to the virus, and those whose lives have been forever changed by it. I remain honored to serve as your Mayor.

ST. JOHN’S LUTHERAN CHURCH DEDICATES GARDEN - On Sunday, April 11th, Suffolk County Legislator Kevin McCaffrey attended a ceremony at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Lindenhurst in recognition of the planting of their apple tree by Girl Scouts Gold Award recipient Margaret Tonjes. Margaret planted the tree during her service project in the garden on April 8th, 2017, just as a church member planted an apple tree in the Luthergarten in Wittenberg, Germany in celebration of the 500th anniversary year of the Protestant Reformation. On hand to mark the occasion was Town Supervisor Rich Schaffer, Town Councilman DuWayne Gregory, Village of Lindenhurst Mayor Mike Lavorata, Deputy Mayor Maryann Weckerle, and Kathleen Rinaldi of Troop 382.
LOCAL OFFICIALS EARN SHAMROCK DEGREES - On the evening of April 6th, Suffolk County Legislator Kevin McCaffrey stood with Town of Babylon Councilman Terence McSweeney and New York State Attorney General’s Long Island Director Of Intergovernmental Affairs TJ Hatter as they earned their Shamrock Degrees from the Ancient Order of Hibernians Division 2 in Babylon. Through the Hibernians, they will be sure to build upon the friendship and brotherhood they already share as dedicated public servants and Irish Americans. Following the leadership of now Ex-Chief Craig Santoli is Chief Engineer Michael DeGregorio, 1st Assistant Chief Dave Collins, 2nd Assistant Robert Santos, and the newest member of the Chief’s Office, 3rd Assistant Jonathan Cutulo. Also recognized was Department Treasurer Sarah Callahan and Department Treasurer Charlie Vozzo. Congratulations to all! Serving his tenure as Chief during this unprecedented public
health crisis, Chief Santoli maintained a focus on the public good, and acted to protect the people of the Lindenhurst community by donating countless hours of time, energy, and personal commitment to keeping us safe. Also honored were the men and women of the Lindenhurst Fire Department who, at their own risk, each and every day, have served,
protected, and cared for the Lindenhurst Community during the COVID-19 Pandemic. Mayor Michael Lavorata said, “I am so grateful to Chief Craig Santoli and the selfless men and women of the Lindenhurst Fire Department for their service during this unfamiliar time of COVID-19.

BABYLON VILLAGE HOSTS SPRING SHOP AND DINE - On Saturday, April 10th, Suffolk County Legislator Kevin McCaffrey joined Village of Babylon Mayor Mary Adams and Mary Carroll’s Owner Conor Hartnett at the Babylon Village Spring Shop and Dine! Sponsored by the Babylon Village Chamber of Commerce and the Village of Babylon, the event closed Deer Park Avenue to vehicle traffic, allowing pedestrians to enjoy the great spring weather and safely visit many Village businesses and restaurants! External Diploma Program The External Diploma Program offers adults 21 and over, the opportunity to receive credit for their life experiences, and earn a high school equivalency diploma without the challenge of taking lengthy timed examinations. EDP, is a competency based
program for students who are unable to attend classes or who prefer to work at home. Successful candidates for EDP include former ESL students, students who have been out of school for prolonged periods of time, or students who fare better without the
structure of tests. This program is an alternative to other programs. Anyone interested should call Western Suffolk BOCES to meet with a counselor. Call 631-667-6000, Ext. 327 to register.
BABYLON CENTRAL FIRE ALARM HONORS LONG TIME DISPATCHER - On the afternoon of Saturday, April 3rd, Suffolk County Legislator Kevin McCaffrey joined Babylon Central Fire Alarm and Rescue Alarm Corporation and other local officials to recognize the achievements of long time Dispatcher Ronnie Kestenbaum. At 3:00pm that afternoon, Ronnie walked out of the Babylon Central office after his regular Saturday tour for the final time, marking the end of his more than 50 years of service to the Town of Babylon, its first responders, and its residents. As one of Babylon Central’s most senior staff members, Ronnie became known as a great teacher and role model for his fellow dispatchers, and is known throughout the Town for his calm demeanor- most notably in disasters such as Hurricane Sandy, several blackouts, and other massive firefighting operations. And as if 50 years behind the console wasn’t enough, Ronnie will continue to serve others with the North Lindenhurst Fire Department, where he volunteers. Congratulations Ronnie on your retirement, and thank you for all you’ve done to keep our citizens and first responders safe and informed! The Kiwanis Club of Lindenhurst officially launched it’s 2021 Hometown Heroes Banner Program in partnership with the Town of Babylon offering residents the opportunity to honor service men and women with a commemorative banner to be displayed in the hamlets of North Babylon, West Babylon, Deer Park, Wheatley Heights, North Amityville, Wyandanch and Copiague. First introduced in the Village of Lindenhurst, the program has now expanded throughout Babylon where banners will be displayed on decorative lamp posts from Memorial Day to Veterans Day.

BACCA on the Arts Serving the Town of Babylon, NY Old Town Hall • 47 West Main Street • Suite 4 • Babylon, NY 11702 www.babylonarts.org •info@babylonarts.org 631-587-3696 The Babylon Citizens Council on the Arts is highlighting the art works of Town of Babylon residents and the stories behind these artists which will be featured regularly in the South Bay’s Neighbor. In commemoration of Memorial Day, it begins its series with the works of Edward Stephenson Bates, a World War II veteran, devoted father, and celebrated painter who lived in Deer Park until his death on January 29th, 2021. The article was written by Jason Jenkins, BACCA Program Coordinator. Edward Bates fully immersed himself into the art world. He began by managing the distribution of fabrics between international textile companies and would also pick up working as an illustrator for women’s wear. Although he displayed an early talent and interest in visual arts as a child, winning Bamberger and Scholastic awards at age 12, it wasn’t until the 1950’s that Bates received a set of oil paints from his uncle and embraced oil painting as his main artistic medium. Bates’ first oil painting, Gaucho, was painted at such a level of artistic maturity and craft comprehension that one would have to question if he did not train with the Renaissance master El Greco himself. In no way was this a mark of beginner’s luck; Bates’s artistic talents were selftaught and consistently nurtured through everything he achieved. For example, his aviation mechanical training surely served as a foundation for his technical precision in portraiture, creating a style that functioned comfortably between realism and the limitless sublime. Whether it was from watching boats sail along the Atlantic City Bay or sailing himself, Bates would inherit the essence of the sea which he instilled within his portraits of historical and cultural figures whose faces would shine with the fluid vitality of the ocean.
Two Girls from Benin, 22 x 24, oil Mr. Bates was truly a communal man and in addition to exhibits at the annual Brooklyn Fulton Street Art Fair, Brooklyn Museum and US Supreme Court, Bates took part in countless others as an active member of the Fulton Street Arts Consortium and the 20th Century Creators. This nationally acclaimed artist would later move to Long Island with his daughter, settling in Deer Park, where he continued to participate in community and arts council activities. He was also a member of the Babylon Citizens Council on the Arts. Bates’ commitment to his craft, culture, and multiple communities found him highly celebrated throughout life, and especially on Long Island – notably in 2013 by the Town of Babylon for his contribution to cultural history, and in 2014
for his one-man career retrospective show at the Conklin House. Edward Stephenson Bates lived his life to such a high degree that every entry of his story can be read as poetic fate. The culmination of his life’s work reaches beyond just historical contribution because his life, being one of boundless love, dedication, and talent, allows him to break through temporal barriers with an eternal reach, inspiring all who encounter his story and work. The Town of Babylon will name a section of Carll’s Path between Tell Ave and Cara Court on June 5th in honor of our local artist and veteran, Edward Bates, on the 96th anniversary of his birth. Sending Messages Of Cheer While the students at the Lindenhurst Union Free School District compiled a list of good deeds done for Kindness Week, others compiled letters of gratitude for members of the community. At Daniel Street Elementary School, students created cards for the local health care workers at Good Samaritan, Southside and Montefiore hospitals. Fifth grade students in Laura Colosa’s class decided to send their messages to essential health care workers directly related to their classmates. This included cards for the
father, aunt and uncle of student Nick Rueb. Their efforts and research are helping to make the world a healthier and safer place for everyone. Third grade students in Stacey Bressi’s class at William Rall Elementary School heard that there was a class of first grade students at the North Ridge Primary School in Commack who were disappointed to learn that their annual Valentine’s Day Party was canceled due to the pandemic. The William Rall students wrote friendly letters to the class in hopes of cheering them up. “We didn’t
want any kids to feel sad, especially on a holiday,” said third grader Amelia Stankiewicz. The idea of spreading joy through writing was also shared by the National Junior Honor Society students at Lindenhurst Middle School who recently started a “letter drive,” in which they, along with other students, aides, and teachers wrote letters to some of the elderly members of the community, who may be feeling alone and down during these difficult times.

Obituary Anthony D’Angelo, 83, of Lindenhurst, NY, passed away on April 16, 2021 at home surrounded by his family. Anthony was born in Flushing, Queens NY to Joseph D’Angelo on February 19, 1938. He went to high school at Jamaica High School. He met his wife Janet Lindroth when they were both young teenagers and married in 1960 in Queens NY. BABYLON FIRE DEPARTMENT MOURNS LOSS OF PAST CHIEF - Earlier this month, Suffolk County Fire Rescue suffered the loss of Babylon Fire Department Past Chief and 53 year member Brad Maier. Chief Maier also served as a Deputy Commissioner of the Suffolk County Department of Fire, Rescue, and Emergency Services, and currently served as a County Deputy Fire Coordinator and photographic contributor to FireNews. Is It Safe To Donate Blood During The Pandemic? Donating blood is a selfless act that saves lives. Blood donors may recognize the vital role they play in patient care, but many may wonder if it’s safe to donate blood during
the pandemic. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, it is safe for anyone who is well to donate blood. That even goes for people who are social distancing due
to COVID-19. The CDC has recommended various safety measures to ensure the safety of donors and donation center volunteers and staff members. Such measures include spacing
donor chairs at least six feet apart and encouraging donors to make donation appointments ahead of time. Appointments can ensure donors are not spending more time at the donation
center than is absolutely necessary, reducing the likelihood that they have contact with someone who may have COVID-19 but not know it. The Red Cross notes it has instituted
additional safety protocols, such as laundering blankets used by donors after each use and requiring all donors and staff to wear face coverings or masks during the donation process.

Why does NY State have such restrictive guidelines for animal hospitals?
We enjoy having you there too.
The NY State government has put detailed guidelines in place for all businesses, not just veterinarians. For example, medical facilities are required to screen patients before admitting them into the facility.
However right now we are required to follow guidelines issued by New York State that state “Curbside intake and pickup of animals should be used, wherever practical, to minimize the numbers of clients in waiting areas and exam rooms.”* Although that creates a lot of extra work for our staff, we are committed to complying with the NY State safety guidelines during the COVID-19 crisis, and to protect our client’s health and safety. *Exceptions can be made in situations like euthanasia
Are these still necessary? Restrictions are lifted on other things. By July 2020, restrictions like curbside check-in have helped reduce the number of people diagnosed with COVID-19 in New York State down from over 10,000 a day to below 1,000. At the same time we have seen infections rise dramatically in other states who had fewer restrictions.
