Those students used their researching skills to create group Google Slide presentations in which they explored their favorite Olympic events in greater depth following a set criteria. Presentations, which included music, video clips and photographs, were researched, designed and presented by each group to their fellow classmates in front of a “panel of judges” (the classroom teachers).

Recruiting New Talent The nationallyrecognized marching band from Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School visited Copiague Middle School student-musicians on March 2nd in effort to pique their interest in joining the band. The marching band, led by band director Eric Dobmeier, showed off

some of their instruments and musical selections to the middle school students. Marching band members spoke about some of their individual experiences. The musicians, along with members of the Color Guard, played part of their routine for the audience of young musicians. They also showed a video of their

performance in Syracuse last year. The band is beginning its recruiting process now before it starts rehearsals in May. The band practices during the summer months and culminates its season with a performance in Syracuse.

The Welcome Friends soup kitchens have provided hot, nutritious meals five days every week for over 27 years. The volunteer staff has increased to more than 200 remarkable members, and the guests typically number between 50 to sometimes more than 70 each night. Welcome Friends operates with a 100% volunteer staffed organization, assuring contributors that their donations are used exclusively for the preparation and serving of meals. The volunteers together form an outstanding team that addresses hunger and works to expand relationships with individual supporters, local food markets, farm stands, religious institutions, community leaders, local village government and other agencies. After almost three decades serving the greater Port Jefferson area, the leaders and volunteers of Port Jefferson’s Soup announced their decision to become an independent notfor-profit corporation named “Welcome Friends.” The operation has become self-sustaining, with a solid foundation of local community support. As the world pauses to reflect on the contributions and accomplishments of women during this International Women’s Day, Suffolk Legislator Kara Hahn is proud to announce that the County is joining a growing number of municipalities that have designated March 19th as “Celebrating Women in Public Office Day.” The designation comes

after the Legislature, on Tuesday, unanimously approved a bill sponsored by Legislator Hahn making the proclamation. That bill, which celebrates this and each successive March 19th as Celebrating Women in Public Office Day, was cosponsored by the entire 18 member legislature. “A women’s place is everyplace and this

day, while symbolic, highlights not only the accomplishments of women elected to office, but also of the increasing awareness that women can and need to be part of the change conservation,” said Legislator Hahn. “I am proud to be alive during an era when the voices of women are no longer allowed to be marginalized and am just as proud to

have the support of my colleagues, regardless of sex, that understand a woman’s perspective is essential to our shared path forward.” According to Retugers University’s Center for American Women and Politics, in 2017 only 19.6% of Congressional and 25.1% of state legislative seats were held by women and six of the fifty governors

(12%) were females despite the 2016 United States Census estimating women make up 50.8% of the national population. The Suffolk County Legislature is slightly more representative of the population it serves with 1/3 of its membership being female. “It is my hope that when we honor the women elected to office, we will

inspire more women and girls to want to be part of our democratic process by not only running for office, but to also be engaged in all parts of governmental administration and society,” concluded Legislator Hahn. Champions Recognized While many cheered on champions representing the United States of America during the 2018 Winter Olympic games in February, Lindenhurst Middle School teachers, parents and administrators

cheered on the students chosen to be honored at the school’s monthly Breakfast for Champions celebrations coordinated by teacher Kathy Curran. Now in its 20th year, the breakfast honors

students who exemplify Lindy Pride at the middle school level. Students are nominated by teachers for a variety of reasons and are recognized publically in front of proud parents, teachers and peers during

the event held at the Lindencrest Diner. With proud parents and teachers looking on, students received their certificates of Merit from Principal Frank Naccarato. During the February

celebration, Principal Linda Domanico of Daniel Street Elementary School informed the students that she and the other elementary school principals knew that they were champions when they

were at the elementary level and encouraged them to continue to be champions at the high school level.

~ Lemony Snicket ~ The above is one of my favorite quotes, penned by American author Lemony Snicket, creator of the famed “Series of Unfortunate Events” books and several other works. A bit tongue in cheek, with a dash of sarcasm, his words have always resonated with me on many levels. Mostly concerning the irony of life as a whole, they offer an undeniable degree of wisdom in between the cynical undertones. I have often been categorized as an unapologetic idealist; which is to say, optimism mixed with a touch of unrealism. Having taken to heart the expression that you can - quite literally - do anything you put your mind to, I see no valid reason why the seemingly

impossible be not, in fact, very possible with the proper balance of dedication and drive. Of course, this concept often involves multiple parties working as one, which is generally where problems come into play. Individually, we can each set our minds to particular goals and aspirations and see through the necessary steps to complete them. As a group, even a small one, it often requires a meeting of the minds, so to speak, a bit of give and take to find an acceptable middle ground. The problem with this is agreeing upon the “happy” medium. As with most favorite quotations, this particular one seems to resonate year after year, albeit applied to different circumstances; but relevant, nonetheless. As much as time marches on, just as many aspects of life remain the same. I will always feel optimism is a preferable quality to embody, farreaching as it may be. If you can’t hope for the best, then what is the
