The Charity of the Month for March is
YES Community Counseling Center www.yesccc.org by Zoom or at the YES Community Counseling Center office. The mission of the BRIDGES program is to engage, support and empower young adults and their families, identify needs, overcome barriers to get help and mobilize community recovery support services.
The organization was formed in 1977 as a result of funding obtained from the Town of Oyster Bay, which enabled them to provide street outreach and job placement for youth. Shortly after, they expanded upon their services for youth and have grow to provide a multitude of programs for children, adults, and families through Federal, State, County and private funding streams.
The BRIDGES program also includes on site recovery support groups, drop-in hours and wellness/self-care workshops and it provides prevention programs and self-care workshops to staff, students and young adults at high schools, colleges and other organizations.
BRIDGES services are provided by a team of professionals with a wide range of expertise, including Licensed Social Workers, Licensed Mental Health YES Community Counseling Center Counselors, Clinical Psychologist/ was honored as one of 17 recipients Grant Coordinator, Direct Service nationally to be awarded funding Facilitator and Medical Staff to by SAMHSA (Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration) oversee Medication Assisted Treatment Maintenance, medical screenings, to support youth ages 17-25 years of and psychiatric services. On Saturday afternoon, Suffolk County Legislator Kevin McCaffrey joined the Lindenhurst Knights of Columbus and Lindenhurst Chamber of Commerce for their first annual “Chamber
Knight Out” benefitting the American Wheelchair Mission! Nearly a dozen of Lindenhurst’s finest bars and restaurants played host to the event by offering participants
great discounts on their signature food and drink items. In doing so, they managed to bring a great amount of foot traffic to the Lindenhurst Downtown, even in the face of an evening snow squall!

Lindenhurst High School Paw Patrol Supports Shelters
Lindenhurst High School Paw Patrol club members recently made and sold homemade dog and cat treats using natural ingredients such as pumpkin, egg, bacon,
milk and whole wheat flour and raised $130 for local animal shelters. Club President and 11th grader Jamila Rodriguez said, “We are always looking for ways to connect
with the animals and take care of them because they can’t speak for themselves and there is so many little things we can do to help.”

Lindenhurst HS Symphonic Band Learns From ‘The President’s Own’
Lindenhurst High School symphonic band, under the direction of teacher Kevin Pike, recently took part in a virtual clinic led by Staff Sgt. Tyler Hsieh, clarinetist in “The President’s Own” Marine Band. Throughout the interactive session, Hsieh explored various practicing
techniques to assist the students’ performances and help them to avoid boredom while practicing. He emphasized the importance of setting goals and mastering the fundamentals of the instrument by performing scales, practicing long tones and articulation exercises.
Additionally, he shared with the students some of his personal experience performing with the “President’s Own,” America’s oldest continuously active professional musical organization, including his performance during the presidential inauguration of 2020.

On the morning of Friday, February 18th, Presiding Officer of the Suffolk County Legislature Kevin McCaffrey joined Congressman Andrew Garbarino as the Congressman announced his newest piece of legislation, “The Veterans Service Organizations (VSO) Support Act of 2022,” at a press conference at Baylon’s own American
Legion Post 94. The Act will create a Small Business Administrationlike grant program to address the needs of VSO’s as they fight to keep their facilities open. Over the last two years, our VSO’sincluding our American Legion Posts, VFW Halls, Disabled American Veterans Chapters, were ineligible for financial assistance provided by the Small Business
Administration, such as the Paycheck Protection Plan and Economic Injury Disaster Loan. Specifically, the bill will establish a $25 million grant program through the VA that allows VSOs to apply for grants of up to $50,000 to keep their facilities open and operational for the community.

Thriving communities for businesses to flourish: Thriving communities are good for business. According to the investment plan laid out by NY Renews, in addition to funding renewable energy investments, the $15 billion fund will also go towards improving public transit, public housing, and public schools, all necessary infrastructure for communities to succeed. Additional funding will go towards community-based organizations in neighborhoods most impacted by pollution and the climate crisis to fund local projects that increase our renewable energy supply, make homes and buildings more efficient, and increase resilience to climate change. A significant portion of this funding will go to low-income communities of color, which have received historically inadequate investments from the state and are most vulnerable to pollution and climate change. All of these investments will help New York communities thrive.

In recent years, however, we’ve become concerned that the CLCPA has not been funded. It’s clear that New York needs significant and consistent funding allocations to meet the goals of the CLCPA and realize the benefits of the law for New Yorkers. By allowing the law to remain an unfunded mandate, Albany will create an unstable situation for businesses and leave significant economic benefits on the table. This is why we strongly encourage you to allocate, at minimum, $15 billion in climate, jobs, and justice funding in this year’s New York State budget. These funds will benefit businesses and the communities which we serve in a multitude of ways: Creating jobs and increasing spending power: Investing $15 billion yearly in climate, jobs, and justice will create and sustain 150,000 good-paying jobs over the next decade. Creating stable jobs in renewable energy, building efficiency, public transit, and supportive industries will grow New York’s economy and increase spending power. This is good for New Yorkers, and it’s good for business. New York has the opportunity to be a business leader in renewable energy specifically, creating these jobs here in our state rather than allowing other states to overtake us in this critical and growing market. All jobs created — in renewable energy and otherwise — are good news for New York.
It’s clear that this $15 billion investment makes good business sense for New York. We strongly encourage the governor and legislature to include this funding in this year’s New York State budget.

Stable investments in building a renewable energy economy: Under the CLCPA, New York must run on 100% renewable electricity by 2040, and our entire economy must be carbon-neutral by 2050. We have made pitiful progress: just 31% of our electric generation comes from renewable sources, and since 2019, we have reduced our economy-wide emissions by only 6%. Moreover, New York currently sends over $30 billion out of state every year to purchase fossil fuels. PSEG Long Island is reminding customers that balloons released into the air can become entangled in overhead electric equipment and cause a host of problems. “Safety is PSEG Long Island’s No. 1 priority. That’s why we’re cautioning customers to please hold onto their metallic balloons,” said John O’Connell, PSEG Long Island’s vice president of Transmission and Distribution Operations. “Though they’re festive, fun and look nice, we want the public to be aware that metallic balloons also conduct electricity. If they get loose and come into contact with a power line or other electrical equipment, that could lead to power outages, fire and, possibly, injuries.” To mitigate these risks, PSEG Long Island
encourages the public to follow these safety guidelines: • Metallic balloons and other decorations should be kept clear of overhead power lines and equipment, and never purposely released into the air. • All balloons with helium should be secured to weights that prevent them from floating away. • To properly dispose of a Mylar balloon, safely puncture it in several places to release the
helium, and discard it in the trash. • NEVER touch a power line. Do not attempt to retrieve a balloon, toy or anything caught in an overhead power line.
