2020 Village Election Date There will be a Lindenhurst Village Election for Mayor, for a four-year term, and two (2) Trustees, for fouryear terms. This year, the Lindenhurst Village Election will be held on Wednesday, March 18, 2020. All polling places will be open from 9:00 AM – 9:00 PM. Since the third Tuesday of March 2020 falls on the

seventeenth day, in order to comply with New York State Election Law § 15104 General village election (1.b.), the election will take place on Wednesday, March 18, 2020. Please note that this is a change from what is listed in the 2020 Village Sanitation calendar; the date change of the election was not known at press time for the calendar. All village residents

registered to vote with the Suffolk County Board of Elections as of Friday, March 6, 2020 are eligible to cast ballots in this election. “I urge all eligible persons to be registered and participate in the election process”, stated Village Administrator Clerk Douglas Madlon. Daylight Saving Time March 8 Most parts of North America will begin Daylight Saving Time on March 8, 2020, at 2:00 a.m., respective to their time zones. In the European Union, “Summer Time” begins at 1:00 a.m. on the last Sunday in March, which this year will be March 29. The change is made at the same absolute time across all time zones respective to Greenwich Mean Time, which also is known as Universal Time.

One reason DST is still practiced in many areas of the world is to push an hour of daylight from the morning to the evening and make better use of this daylight. There are various origin stories linked to DST, including one that involves Benjamin Franklin. DST also has been touted as a way to save resources during times of war or as a means to helping farmers be more prosperous. However, despite the many

proclaimed benefits of DST, there are many detractors who insist that there are no perceived benefits. Some of these DST naysayers say switching the clocks twice a year can negatively affect the body’s natural circadian rhythm. Various efforts both domestically and abroad have been instituted to abolish DST, but as of 2020, it remains on the calendar.

The Kiwanis Club of Lindenhurst, in partnership with the Village of Lindenhurst, is launching a Hometown Heroes Banner Program as a living tribute for our community to honor past and present members of the United States Armed Forces. Banners are doublesided, 18” x 36” and digitally printed on heavy duty vinyl. Each banner is custom made to honor a specific Hometown Hero who has served or is currently serving in the U.S. Armed Services

Stop World Hunger Presents Upcoming Events Over the past 39 years, Stop World Hunger Inc. has forwarded $136,110.65 to Catholic Relief Services to assist them in their efforts to feed God’s hungry children “where the need is greatest”, regardless of race, religion and/or nationality. In addition, they collect food for our hungry neighbors on Long Island. Stop World Hunger is pleased to launch their 40th year of tennis fundraisers. A special Tennis & Pickleball party will take place at Carefree Racquet Club in

North Merrick on March 21, 2020. The party will run from 8PM-Midnight and admission is $20/ players and $7.50/nonplayers. Players will be guaranteed two hours of playing time (doubles) and refreshments will be available. Also, applications are now available for their annual Stop World Hunger Spring Tennis Tournament. Pets bring much joy to the lives they touch. So it should come as no surprise that the 2019-2020 National Pet Owners Survey, which was conducted by the American Pet Products Association, found that about 85 million families in the United States own a pet. In Canada, 7.5 million households are home to companion animals, states the PetBacker blog. Pets offer companionship and unconditional love. While they are fitting for any family, seniors may find that having a pet is especially beneficial. The organization A Place for Mom, which helps match families with senior living residences, says pets provide a comfort system that produces measurable health results. Caring for pets and being around them can produce a chemical chain reaction in the brain that may help to lower stress hormones while also increasing production of the feelgood hormone serotonin. This is not the only health benefit pets may provide. A recent study from the Mayo Clinic, which looked at 1,800 people between the ages of 25 and 64 who had healthy hearts, found that almost half owned a dog. Having a dog was likely to spur heart-healthy behaviors, like exercising with the pet, eating well and having ideal blood sugar levels. Pets also provide emotional support and companionship that can help seniors — including those who may be divorced or widowed — feel more secure and happy. The National Poll on Healthy Aging found that, among respondents who had pets, 88 percent said their pets helped them enjoy life, and 86 percent said their pets made them feel loved. Seniors considering getting a pet can explore the many benefits to doing so. • Reduce pain: A 2012 study published in Pain Magazine found therapy dogs provided “significant reduction in pain and emotional distress for chronic pain patients.”

An Open Letter to the Lindenhurst Educational Community Dear Parents of the Lindenhurst Community, Starting on Wednesday, March 25, New York State students from grades 3-8 will once again be asked to participate in the English and Math assessments. We are writing to let you know that you, as the parent of a third through eighth grader, have a choice about whether or not your child will take these tests. Preparing For Lent And Easter The Christian tradition of Lent is celebrated across the globe by many different denominations of the faith. Lent is a 40-day period of sacrifice that begins on Ash Wednesday and culminates with the celebration of the resurrection of Jesus Christ on Easter Sunday. Lent is designed to help Christians prepare

for Easter through prayer, repentance of sins, almsgiving, denying the ego, and putting and end to sinful practices. Fasting is a component of Lent, as is abstinence from certain behaviors. In fact, in some Western countries, Catholics have been encouraged to adopt forms of abstinence that do not involve food and

drink during Lent. All actions serve as forms of self-denial to mirror the sacrifice Jesus Christ made for his people. Abstaining from alcohol is not mandatory during Lent. That might be traced to ancient times, when wine and other forms of alcohol were safer to drink than pathogen-filled water sources. But many

people now choose to give up alcohol for Lent. Today, fasting is primarily reserved for Ash Wednesday and Fridays during Lent, including Good Friday. Adherents may opt to fully fast, but most only eschew meat and poultry as a nod to self-denial, opting for seafood and vegetarian fare instead. While much focus is

placed on what is denied during Lent, it can be an ideal time to reflect on what is gained by living a life in which God is first and foremost. Spending more time in prayer and away from trivial distractions can be a way to live a more faithful life during Lent and beyond. In addition, aspiring to be more Christ-like during Lent

can make this special season even more powerful. During Lent, Christians can make a concerted effort to help the poor, work with a charity or volunteer at their church. Lent is a solemn time, but one that can bolster one’s faith.
