William Rall Elementary School held its 11th annual spelling bee for students in fourth and fifth grades on January 29th. The contestants were the top three winners from each of their respective classrooms. The Rall spelling bee used the Scripps National Spelling Bee contest rules as guidance for this test of spelling skill. Fourth grade student Thomas Stankiewicz took first place and fifth grade student Ava Facilla took second place. Both students have advanced to the next round, in which they will perform in an online spelling and vocabulary competition.

MATTHEW FREJEK MAKES USA TAEKWONDO NATIONAL TEAM: - The Town Board recently honored 10-year-old Matthew Frejek, who earned a spot on the USAT National Team. Matthew, who trains at Champions TaeKwonDo in Copiague, faced tough competition from across the country, but his hard work and dedication paid off. The Town Board also honored Matthew’s coach, Master JunHyun Han. Matthew hopes to compete in the summer Olympics one day. Congrats Matthew and Master Han!

2024 Summer Camp Lottery Now Open! We are pleased to announce that the Village will again sponsor the annual Summer Recreation Camp at the Village Park. The camp will start at the beginning of July (exact date TBD) and continue for six (6) weeks. Camp hours are 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM, Monday – Friday. Campers are grouped by age (not by school grade) in the following groups: 5-7 year olds, 8-9 year olds, and 1014 year olds. The camp is open to

Lindenhurst children who are eligible to attend the Lindenhurst School District. Please note, children must complete kindergarten by the end of this school year to be eligible to register. Our staff is planning hard to offer the campers a summer of fun. We are determined to follow all recommendations and protocols established by the Board of Health and camper to counselor ratios; thus, the lottery. Please fill out the lottery application. If your child is

chosen, you will receive the registration documents via email. The application and all pertinent information (including instructions for registration such as time and place, required forms and fees) will be included in the email. Be sure to include all requested information on the lottery application, especially email contact. All remaining applicants who did not get chosen in the lottery will be placed on a waiting list for their age group.

A lottery application must be submitted for each child. If you cannot print the application or submit it via email, please call Village Hall (631) 957-7500 between 8:00 AM and 3:30 PM. plum tomatoes, peeled, seeded and chopped, (about 1 cup)

Directions Cook the bacon in a soup pot over medium heat until the fat is released and the bacon bits are crisp, 6 to 8 minutes. Add the onions and garlic. Cook, stirring frequently, until the onions are a light golden brown, 8 to 10 minutes. Add the zucchini, cover the pot and cook until the zucchini starts to become translucent, about 5 minutes. Add the broth, tomatoes, tomato puree, and vinegar. Bring the soup to a simmer and cook until the vegetables are very tender and the soup has developed a good flavor, 15 to 20 minutes. Add the basil to the soup, and season with salt and pepper. Serve in heated bowls, garnished with cheddar rusks.

Long Island State Park Dashboard Permits For 2024 Season The New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation is pleased to announce the following dashboard permits are available for purchase now through March 31, 2024, for the upcoming 2024 season: 4x4 Fishing, 4x4 Surfing, Stargazing, Night/Sport Fishing, Camp Hero Fishing, Nighttime Photography, and Regional SCUBA-Diving. Mercy Soup Kitchen Seeking Volunteers It is an exciting time at the Mercy Soup Kitchen of Wyandanch as it is preparing to launch its new and expanded post Covid operation. Located in the basement of Trinity Lutheran Church at 17 South 20th Street, the Kitchen served its first meal to hungry people in 1980 and currently serves an average of 108 people per day.

During the pandemic, however, Kitchen procedures had to be modified in order to provide hot, nourishing meals safely and continuously to those in need. Indoor sit-down dining was discontinued and only take-out dining was available. But today the Kitchen is posing for a postCovid reopening – a reorganizational rebirth

of sorts – where Kitchen procedures can finally return to again offering guests dignified, indoor sitdown dining. The Kitchen relies heavily on its generous volunteer support and, as such, numerous on-site and offsite volunteer opportunities are now available. While there are openings for on-site positions, such as helping to prepare and

serve meals and to perform various maintenance functions, there are also openings for diverse off-site positions in areas such as finance, grant development and preparation, legal compliance assurance, marketing duties, social media facilitation and fund raising/donation coordination. Only with the efforts of its volunteers can the Kitchen

Joe Fackler grew up living in Long Beach, New York he now lives and works in Massapequa. His life revolves around his family, selling Real Estate and Coaching Softball. Joe, like the other coaches, has a different style of helping the players in the time of need. When it comes to the games and practices, he wants the kids to win and feel proud of themselves. However, he always makes sure the kids are not stressed out about whether they win or lose. “Remain calm. They’re kids. They’re going to make mistakes. Everybody wants to win but you have to stay calm,” he said. He believes in core values such as respect for both the players and the coaches.

Coach Joe has been a true helper to these kids as they have been to him. While they get good training and a respectful coach, he gets to give back to the community which he loves so much. “He’s not just a coach to these girls, he’s their friend,” Rios said. Now Joe says its back to reality and back to work changing people’s lifestyles in the form of selling homes throughout Long Island. While coaches get a lot of recognition for their strategies within games and practices, the parents get to see a lot on the sidelines that many people don’t always see. “Joe brought a little more light to heavy practices... Coach Joe was the guy who had fun with them and gave them a different perspective,” said Josie Rios, the parent of Ava Rios, who played on Joe’s 2023 World Series Team. “He coached our kids without a kid on the team and he still coaches for the local little league. He began coaching the Little League World Series team along with fellow coaches Dom Fontana and the team manager Rich Eaton. “Dom and Rich are the best of the best” Joe said. With hard work and lots of practices, the Massapequa Softball Little League team had the chance to participate in the World Series Championship game in Greenville North Carolina that took place on August 13, 2023.

One of his greatest interests since 2008, is serving as a coach for the Massapequa International Little League team where he also sits on the board of directors. He became interested in 2008 when he played father-daughter tee-ball with his then 3-year-old daughter Jessica.
