The Long Island Music Hall of Fame is proud to announce that it is accepting applications for the 2020 School Recognition Program. The Long Island Music Hall of Fame High School Recognition Program is designed to identify Long Island High School music programs that are creating valuable music experiences for their students and that are incorporating the National and New York State’s Standards for the arts in creative and meaningful ways. “We are very excited to offer Long Island schools an opportunity to have their music programs objectively evaluated,” said LIMHOF Vice Education Committee Chairman Tom Needham. “We will not only honor programs but will also share feedback and learn more about the challenges each school faces as we continue to support and promote
music education on Long Island.” Applications will be reviewed by a panel of music educators some whom have been recognized by the Long Island Music Hall of Fame as “Educators of Note.” High Schools will be given designations of Gold with Distinction, Gold, Silver, Bronze or Emerging. Application categories included program details, inclusion of standards, faculty, as well as community and board support. Recognized schools will have the opportunity to participate in an upcoming Long Island Music Hall of Fame event and will be acknowledged throughout the year. “The Long Island Music Hall of Fame is committed to music education, it is part of our mission and helps steer many of the programs we have developed,” said LIMHOF Chairman Ernie Canadeo.

The Charity of The Month for February is: Girls on the Run of Long Island www.gotrlongisland.org Girls on the Run is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. They run a physical activity-based positive youth development program that is designed to enhance girls’ social, psychological and physical skills and behaviors to help them successfully navigate life experiences.
They serve girls in grades 3-5 and inspire them to be joyful, healthy and confident by using a fun, interactive curriculum, which creatively integrates running! Meeting twice a week in small teams for a 10-week season, a volunteer coach will teach girls life skills through engaging lessons and fun movement activities. At each season’s conclusion, all girls from teams across Long Island will meet up for a celebratory 5K running event. This organization also runs a program called Heart & Sole. This is their middle school program that meets the unique needs of girls in 6th-8th grade. Heart & Sole takes girls as a whole into consideration body, brain, heart, spirit and social connection - in a positive and structured space, where participants can learn about themselves, explore new ideas, cultivate empathy and stregthen connections. Running is incorporated into each lesson to encourage physical wellness. These girls also prepare for a celebratory 5K event at the end of the program. The upcoming spring season
for both programs will begin the week of March 16th and is shaping up to be their largest season yet! While many prepared to cheer for champions during the Super Bowl on Feb. 2, Lindenhurst Middle School teachers, parents and administrators cheered on the students chosen to be honored at the school’s monthly Breakfast for Champions
celebrations coordinated by teacher Kathy Curran and held on Jan. 28. Now in its 22nd year, the breakfast honors students who exemplify Lindy Pride at the middle school level. Students are nominated by teachers for a variety of reasons and are
recognized publically in front of proud parents, teachers and peers during the event held at the Lindencrest Diner. With proud parents and teachers looking on, students received their certificates of Merit from Principal Frank Naccarato.

into the Suffolk County Historic Trust and paved the way for the Knights of Columbus Council No.794 to enter into a long term contract for the restoration, maintenance, and operation of the historic building. The Knights of Columbus are an organization that has proudly served the Lindenhurst community on many charitable endeavors since 1903. The community will again be able to enjoy the use of this local historic building that will be a meeting place for the Knights of
Columbus, host local events, and a museum showcasing artifacts and memorabilia from World War I and II from our War Veterans right here in Lindenhurst. “The commitment and investment by the Knights of Columbus really created a “win win” situation for the community”, said McCaffrey. “The historic building will provide a home for Council 794, host local events, and act as a museum which satisfies the intent of the original members of the World War Veterans Club.

Legislator McCaffrey penned two resolutions that were approved by the Suffolk County Legislature at the General Meeting on February 11, 2020. The approval of the resolutions completed a long term effort to bring the World War Veterans Club of Lindenhurst building at 185 North Broadway back into the community. The historic building that has been vacant for the better part of three decades, received a new lease on life. Introductory Resolutions 1012 & 1070 placed the building

Delivering Smiles To Seniors Spreading some love, joy and smiles this Valentine’s Day, members of the Builders Club at Copiague Middle School visited with locals at Tanner Park Senior Center on Feb. 5. As part of a yearly tradition, now in its 17th year, the students spend the
morning with the senior citizens. The Builders Club, the junior version of the Key Club, is run by adviser Maria Ostrofsky. Each senior citizen was hand-delivered a rose and a handmade card by a member of the Builder Club to help brighten
their day. The students spent time getting to know the local members of the community. There was plenty of time to play games, chat and even hit the dance floor to learn some new moves.
