COLORFUL EXPERIMENT - Fourth-graders in Jennifer Spizuco’s class at Deauville Gardens East Elementary School in the Copiague School District recently completed a hands-on science experiment to coincide with their unit on plant and animal structures. Filling a cup with water and blue dye, the students placed a white carnation and a celery stalk and predicted if the flower and celery would change color all the way up or only in the parts that were in water. To celebrate a legacy of building stable foundations for families in Long Island communities Habitat Suffolk is gathering CEOs, top executives and employees to build and network for the launch of the CEO Build program. Each year, the All Kids Fair brings fun and different reasons for kids and their families to attend their annual event. The April 29th All Kids Fair will continue in this tradition. QuackerJack, the Long Island Ducks’ mascot, will visit to the delight of children across Long Island. In addition, the lovely Alexa Cox, Miss Long Island Teen 2018, will be available for a meetand-greet. The All Kids Fair is a Long Island “happening” each spring. Since moving to its larger venue, the Hilton Long Island/ Huntington (also known as the Huntington Hilton), the Fair has been able to accommodate a bounce house, petting zoo, and additional vendors and classes, which was enjoyed by 2,500 people this past April. Children will enjoy a large number of additional

activities and “freebies,” including face painting, photo booth, balloon animals, popcorn, cotton candy, train tables, water ice samples, and an 8 ½ foot snake and other animals to touch. Admission is $5 per person and free for ages 2 and younger and includes everything listed. Ever year the fun-filled All Kids Fair offers exciting educational and health activities to interest kids and their families. The Fair offers choices for toddlers through high school, including kids who have special needs or are gifted. Over 80 exhibitor spaces and many classes provide valuable information. Exhibitors include schools, camps, after school activities, birthday party ideas, and college planning. Some of the many classes that children can share with their parents and grandparents are drama, robots and a Boomers!

Fairy Tale Reform School Students of Albany Avenue Elementary School in the Lindenhurst Union Free School District recently explored the writing process with Jen Calonita, author of the “Fairy Tale Reform School” book series among others. Calonita spoke about her early days of writing as an entertainment journalist, a position she held for 10 years prior to writing her first young

adult series, “Secrets of My Hollywood Life.” She shared with the students how she came to write the current series which revolves around Gilly, a girl who made a bad choice and was sentenced to three months at Fairy Tale Reform School where her teachers are all reformed fairy tale villains. During each of the two school assemblies, the author explained the

process of writing and publishing a book, as well as, the ingredients for a good story such as engaging characters, an exciting premise, a conflict and “the ultimate villain.” Later in the day, Calonita expanded upon this information as she conducted a writer’s workshop session with fourth-grade students in FAIRY TALE REFORM SCHOOL - Albany Avenue Elementary School Principal teacher Jeff Ventura’s class. Newman III Memorial Way.” Newman became a Copiague resident in the early-1970s. He spent 30

years on the Copiague Board of Education, as well as being a former President of the Copiague Lions Club and Kiwanis and leader of several Boy Scouts Troops. Newman passed away in August of 2017. Schaffer highlighted Newman’s commitment to the Copiague community at the ceremony, and used his work as a model for serving the town you live in.

Danielle Palladino, special education teacher at Susan E. Wiley Elementary School in the Copiague School District, was recognized with the Association of Suffolk Supervisors for Educational Technologies Bright Lights Award. Palladino was presented with the award at a luncheon in Great River on January 18th.

“As a special education teacher, my goal is to create a learning environment that fosters confident, independent learners,” Palladino said. “I use technology to enhance the learning experience for my students, but most importantly I use everyday technology resources to empower my students.” Palladino, who has been teaching in the Copiague

School District for 11 years, was nominated for the award for her use of technology in the classroom by Copiague School District’s director of technology Kelly Urraro. “My students are incredibly motivated by technology,” Palladino added. “They enjoy using the Smart Board, reading on EPIC and completing assignments in Google Classroom. They have also begun to work using our district’s ZSpaces, which provide them with realistic 3-D opportunities. I feel extremely fortunate to be teaching in 2018 with such a vast array of technology at my fingertips. I have seen my teaching evolve as technology continues to advance. Cracking the Classics “Do not read, as children do, to amuse yourself; or, like the ambitious, for the purpose of instruction. No, read in order to live.” ~ Gustave Flaubert Winter being one of those seasons best suited for indoor activities, I have recently taken up the hobby of reading; well, by taken up, I mean I have ordered several selections with the intent of reading them (hopefully) before spring arrives. I always say I want to read at least one book a month; generally, this amounts to a single magazine, perhaps a chapter or two of a cast-aside novel from several years ago… rarely do I seem to make any considerable progress in this literary department. This year, on New Year’s Day in fact, I made it my mission to use one of my holiday gift cards to order a handful of the “classics” - The Wind in

the Willows, Walden, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass, and Wuthering Heights - a veritable collection straight from the pages of an old English department syllabus. Some, I had read bits and pieces of years ago; others, I had always wanted to peruse more thoroughly, but had never taken the opportunity to dive into. Of course, nearly six weeks later, and I have yet to make it past the introduction to The Wind in the Willows. An hour a night, I told myself. Simple. Just make it a habit, and the pages will fly by, I theorized. This is recreational reading - no obligation, no required deadline. Read at your leisure, because you want to. And still, somehow, the pile of books remains virtually untouched. Perhaps I should join a book club. Maybe I need the structure, the faux “assignment” to push me

along. Nightly chapter summaries, on the teacher’s desk by morning! But, in all seriousness, it is truly remarkable how difficult we find the task of simply enriching our lives in a cultural sense. Binge a series on Netflix over the course of a few days? Not a problem. Spend hours mindlessly browsing social media? Done. Priorities, indeed. As much as I never thought I would wish for winter to prolong, I am somewhat glad that another month remains to tackle this self-imposed task. Five weeks, to be precise. One book per week or so. Doable? Sure, with the proper focus. Such is the extent of my winter “To Do” list. Not a bad way to spend an evening. Don’t worry, dear readers, you shall have a full report of my progress - or lack thereof by next month. {Side note: they still make Cliff Notes, right?}

HOPE CHILDREN’S FUND

Hope Children’s Fund is an international non-profit that operates with the motto “Education Is Key.” For children in Kenya, this couldn’t be more true. Without an education and the ability to speak English, these children often lack the opportunity to rise above fetching water and cutting wood. Kevin Mann, Vice President of Hope Children’s Fund, explained, “The government in Kenya doesn’t have the resources to take care of the children in their country like the United States government does.” It is not shocking to see a very young child in Kenya hopelessly wandering the streets without family...hungry and just trying to survive. Hope Children’s Fund does something about this problem. In 2001, Hope Children’s Fund registered as a nonprofit and raised $40,000 through donations – precisely enough money to begin construction on an orphanage that stands high up on a hill in Meru, Kenya. By 2005, the orphanage opened and began transforming lives for children, many of whom had lost their parents in the AIDS epidemic. This orphanage, Jerusha Mwiraria Hope Children’s Fund Home, has a dining hall and a dormitory for boys and girls. It provides the children with shelter, steady meals and the opportunity to attend school. The children are shown family values and given chores to complete in order for them to gain life skills. They currently house 100 children and have had many success stories. If you would like to be part of another one of their success stories, you can! There are 22 orphans who still need to be sponsored through Hope Children’s Fund’s sponsorship program - $1/day or $365/year will help send these children to school so they have a better chance to succeed. these children. Upon sponsorship, you will receive a photo and bio of the child you chose to sponsor. You will be able to write letters or send e-mails directly to the child to provide them with hopeful messages! Kevin and his wife often travel to Meru to visit the orphanage and welcome sponsors to travel along to meet firsthand the child they sponsor. Another way you can become involved is by hosting a craft fair right here on Long Island to sell Kenyan crafts made by the Meru Women’s Collective. You will be provided with the goods, and all the profits generated will go back to the children at the orphanage. Contact Kevin Mann for more information. On Febraury 18th, Hope Children’s Fund will host its first Gala at East Wind in Wading River! All are welcome to attend and enjoy a night out to support this charity and its cause. The Gala will include dinner, a unique art auction, music by the band X-Sessions and a possible Skype call with the children at their orphanage in Meru. They are seeking volunteers to help students at their after-school program from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. in Oyster Bay. For most of these students, English is not the first language spoken at home and, as a result, their parents do not understand English sufficiently enough to help them with their schoolwork. Character Counts Each month, Deauville Gardens East Elementary School in the Copiague School District recognizes a different character trait to highlight to its student body. Got Guac?… Skylar Brown, an 8th grader at Copiague Middle School is one of more than 300 Long Island students whose artwork was selected for the Long Island Museum’s Colors of Long Island exhibition in Stony Brook. Skylar’s painting with collage, titled Avocado,

will be on display in the museum’s Visitors Center from February 23rd through April 8th. Long Island art teachers in grades K through 12 were invited to submit up to two of their students’ artwork for the exhibition. Visitors can meet Skylar and all Suffolk County

students who participated in the exhibition at a reception on Sunday, March 4th, at the Museum’s Visitors Center, located at 1200 Route 25A in Stony Brook. Colors of Long Island is sponsored by Sterling National Bank. Boy Scouts Troop 284. At the ceremony, Hernandez was named an Eagle Scout. Supervisor Schaffer thanked Hernandez for his commitment to improving his community and wished him luck in his future endeavors. For his Eagle Scout Project, Hernandez planned and constructed a

Administrators and staff dressed in attire featuring their alma maters to show the many different college options. At the district’s elementary schools, students dressed in their aspirational professional career paths. Future doctors, lawyers, police officers, firefighters, artists and even astronauts filled the hallways and classrooms. Students

wrote about why they want to choose their career paths and shared their choices with classmates. At Great Neck Road Elementary School, fourth-graders listened to college students who spoke about their experiences. Secondgrade students at Susan E. Wiley Elementary School became geologists for the day, mining for rocks and minerals and learning about their properties. Teachers spoke to Copiague Middle School students about their college experiences and students took surveys about

potential career paths based on their interests. Students at Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School listened to Copiague alumni speak about college living, the application process and navigating their way through the first year away from home. In addition, staff members participated in a Dollars for Denim Day, donating the money raised to the Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School Scholarship Fund sponsored by the Copiague Teachers Association.
