Babylon Animal Shelter Receives Hundreds Of Generous Donations In Memory Of Betty White Town of Babylon Supervisor Rich Schaffer and Councilmen Terence McSweeney and DuWayne Gregory recently gathered with Animal Shelter Director Chris Elton and the Town’s companion dog Trigger to celebrate the amazing outcome of the Betty White challenge. As a result of the challenge, The Town of Babylon Animal Shelter received nearly $5,000 in checks and a substantial amount of goods donated. Animal shelters across Long Island raised thousands of dollars in this celebratory fundraising campaign created through social media. It’s been reported that the challenge raised
close to $99,000 in donations on Long Island and $12.7 million across the country. Iconic actress Betty White passed away just weeks before her milestone 100th birthday, and as a result people on social media wanted to celebrate her and her love of helping animals in need. The Betty White Challenge was created to celebrate her birthday by asking people to donate to an animal shelter of their choice on January 19th. “Thanks to the Betty White Challenge, the Babylon Animal Shelter took in so many donations in such a short period of time, we were amazed and overjoyed. We received chew toys, leashes, collars,
dog food, cat food, treats for dogs, treats for cats, beds for all and so much more. In addition we received nearly $5,000 in checks and gift certificates all of which will go toward the care of the cats and dogs of Babylon,” said Animal Shelter Director Chris Elton. “On behalf of the Babylon Town Board and all of our friends at the Animal Shelter, thank you to the residents of Babylon who once again demonstrated their tremendous generosity by participating in this historical challenge in memory of Betty White,” added Supervisor Rich Schaffer.

www.fcali.org With locations across Nassau and Suffolk, Family & Children’s Association (FCA) is a not-for-profit organization that is dedicated to providing help and hope to Long Island’s most vulnerable children, families, seniors and communities. FCA envisions a Long Island where a legacy of optimal health, educational success and economic security passes from one generation to the next; each year it serves 30,000 individuals and families in Suffolk and Nassau counties. Its mission strives to make our island a better place for all of us to live, work and raise a family. FCA has served Long Islanders since 1884 and today its more than 40 programs fall into five big areas of need: Addiction Prevention, Treatment & Recovery Taking on addiction from every angle, beginning with prevention. Recovery support services are offered Islandwide with offices from Hempstead to Westhampton Beach. Children’s Mental Health & Wellness This division offers an array of services and supports designed to promote the health and wellness of children and their families. The services are for individuals up to 21 years of age who have or are at risk of developing a mental health diagnosis. Services are always free to clients, voluntary, family-driven, strength-based, and culturally competent, with location and scheduling tailored to each family’s needs. They also provide support for the families of individuals with mental and/ or behavioral health issues. Prevention & Family Support FCA’s prevention team provides critical services to at-risk children and families including a nursery co-op program,
alcohol and substance abuse and gun violence r e d u c t i o n program, and more, through collaboration, education, and advocacy. Residential Care FCA operates four residences that focus on quality care, seamless transitions and well-managed aftercare services for youth. Nassau Haven and Walkabout provide emergency shelter and longer term transitional housing for homeless, runaway and trafficked youth. Two other residences support children and young adults with serious emotional disturbances or mental health issues. Senior & Adult Services FCA believes that every senior deserves to live with dignity, safety and independence. FCA helps more than 10,000 seniors a year with meal deliveries, caregiver support, home visits for companionship, elder abuse prevention and advocacy. The number of people who turn to FCA for help is growing and with it, the need for donations to close gaps in government funding. FCA’s programs and services are greatly enhanced by the involvement of others, whether through donations of time or money, and welcome the help of all Long Islanders to further its mission. Therefore, if you would like to get involved with this organization, you can! Entertaining is a great way to show good will and friendship to others and to celebrate special occasions. Many people can successfully throw parties, but hosting a great party takes a little extra effort. By following some tips, hosts can ensure their next party is one to remember.
Stick To A Theme
Many party hosts find that themes help in the planning. Themes make it easy to coordinate invitations, decor, food, and music. Guests also may enjoy dressing up according to the theme.
Start Making Lists
Make lists regarding which foods you plan to cook, what you need to buy, who you plan to invite, and any other details that are floating around in your head. Getting things on paper and checking off the list can help keep things moving.
Have A Seating Plan
Have ample seating available and consider assigning seats at formal affairs so guests can sit next to friends or like-minded fellow invitees.
Do As Much You Can In Advance
When hosting at home, spend the day prior to the party getting the house in order and making any food if the party will not be catered. If it will be catered, confirm with the catering company the delivery time and firm up any other details. You’ll be far less frazzled if you space out your tasks than trying to squeeze them in a few hours before guests arrive.

Throughout the month of January, the students at Daniel Street Elementary School in the Lindenhurst Union Free School District have enjoyed a special “Snowman Surprise.” Each day of the month,
a different class was surprised to discover a blow-up snowman waiting for them upon arrival. The snowman, who stood about three feet tall, came with a note informing them that at some point in the day,
a special secret reader (who may or may not have been their principal, Mrs. Kimberly Boccanfuso, SHHHHHHH) would pop in and bring a little joy to their day while sharing a winter-themed book.

The four-session takes place on consecutive Tuesdays — February 8th, 15th, 22nd and March 1st –f rom 10 am to 1 pm on zoom. This in-depth training
includes presentations by nurse navigators and social workers on basic breast cancer education, active listening skills, and tips on engaging the community. Attendance at all four sessions is required. For 42 years, the Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program has been helping women and

The Story Of Cupid What would Valentine’s Day be without images of a golden-tressed boy armed with bow and arrows? The arrows represent feelings of love and desire, and they are aimed and cast at various individuals, causing them to fall deeply in love — or fall out of it. In Roman mythology, the boy is known as Cupid and is the son of Venus, the goddess of love. Portrayed as a cherubic and mischievous toddler, this magical boy was purported to be the matchmaker of gods and mortals alike. For students of Greek mythology, Cupid represents Eros, the Greek word for “desire.” He was the son of Aphrodite, Venus’ Hellenistic counterpart, and would play with the hearts of mortals and gods, sometimes leaving
mayhem in his wake. In Greek mythology, Eros was more teenager than bubbly baby, and capitalized on his status as a heartthrob rather than the cherubic status of Roman mythology, according to Richard Martin, a Stanford University professor. While Cupid may have been an adorable imp, some historians say Eros had a darker side, going so far as to describe him as calculating and sinister — forcing the wrong people into lovelorn matches. According to Museum Hack, while Cupid could make people fall in and out of love, he also was once in love himself. In this telling, Cupid is a young man when Venus learns that a mortal girl is born with such great beauty that others start to forget to worship Venus, adoring this girl
instead. Upset about the misdirected adoration toward this mortal, Venus asks Cupid to have the girl, Psyche, fall in love with a monster. Cupid agrees, but once he sees Psyche he “accidentally” hits himself with one of his own golden arrows and falls in love with Psyche. The resulting match does not prove easy, and through a series of unfortunate events, Psyche must prove her love to Cupid and accomplish various tasks to win back his heart. Eventually, Psyche does and achieves goddess status. Cupid has been portrayed both as a young man and child through Renaissance art and beyond. When Valentine’s Day became popular in the 18th and 19th centuries, Cupid was linked to Valentine’s
Day celebrations due to his matchmaking abilities. His popularity only continued in the early 20th century,
when Hallmark began to manufacture Valentine’s Day cards featuring Cupid. Cupid helped push
people together in ancient mythology, and he can even be the catalyst for modern day matchmaking as well.
