mentioned to me that they were inspired to operate this outreach in a mobile matter because the Gospel tells us that, when going to help others, Jesus traveled to them instead of having them to come to Him. Lighthouse Mission also has a Youth Outreach that operates on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Saturdays. Every Tuesday, they open their facility to high school students and offer them food, entertainment and time to socialize in a Christian setting. Every Wednesday, they do the same for middle school students; and on the first and third Saturday of each month, they offer this for students K-5. All of these events are free of charge and open to everyone. If you are interested in becoming involved with this organization, there are plenty of ways to do so. They gladly accept clothing and food donations and currently are in need of winter coats. As far as volunteering, they accept walk-on volunteers at all of their Food Outreach events. If you are interested in coming with a group to a Food Outreach event or are interested in volunteering at a Youth Outreach Event, please call their office at 631.758.7584 first for more information.

“Providing Hope Beyond The Food” … this is a phrase often used at Lighthouse Mission, a mobile food pantry on Long Island. This non-profit reaches 2,000 people per week with the mission to share the Gospel of Jesus and feed the poor. Pastor Jim Ryan is the President of this inspiring ministry, and the story of his journey to become so is so inspiring that it left me speechless. After meeting with him and touring their quite busy facility, located at 1543 Montauk Highway in Bellport, I was extremely moved by all that I learned about and saw. Lighthouse Mission is a registered nonprofit that operates 100% on donations, receiving no government help. Their Food Outreach operates weekly on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays (visit their website at www. LighthouseMission.com for a full Food Outreach Schedule). Instead of operating this outreach from a single location, Lighthouse Mission chose to go mobile and travel to different locations where those in need could line up to receive plenty of nutritional food, gently used clothing and hear the word of God from one of the pastors working the event. Lindenhurst High School students Kayla Durin and Tom Renick were recently selected as recipients of New York State Association of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance Suffolk Zone Awards. The students were recently recognized at the annual Suffolk Zone Awards Dinner at the Hyatt Regency Wind Watch in Hauppauge. Each year, every high school in Suffolk County recognizes the top male and female physical education students based on NYSAHPERD’s criteria. Students must maintain an “A” average in their physical education classes, and an overall grade point average of 3.0 in all their classes. They must demonstrate strong character and contribute positively to their class and school, in addition to demonstrating responsibility, physical education class leadership, schoolwide or community leadership and be a positive role model to other students. During at the Suffolk County Swim Coaches Association dinner held at Villa Lombardi’s in Holbrook on January 9th, Lindenhurst High School students and members of the varsity swimming and diving team Arianna Liebowitz, Samantha Perez, Brooklyn Ratel, Paige Rowan and Jenna Tocco, were honored for their “All-League” designation for the 20172018 season. The athletes were recognized for their performance in the 200 Medley Relay and 400 freestyle relay at the League 2 Championship held at Suffolk County Community College earlier in the year.

Little League National Guidelines now allow ALL children who attend the following schools south of Sunrise Highway to play in our League! Lindenhurst High School, Lindenhurst Middle School, Alleghany Ave., Daniel Street, Harding Ave., & West Gates Elementary Schools.

Over the past couple of seasons our league has moved our intramural program for Juniors & Seniors into an interleague program. We have gotten a lot of positive feedback and we are excited to extend this progam to our Minors and Majors Division. Since the 2015 baseball season our Minors and Majors have been participating in both 2016 in-house games and interleague games. The interleague games will be with Copiague and Amityville. Most games will still be played at Kienle Field and some games scheduled at a local field.

Five Cents, Please Seen at the local supermarket last week: a gentleman piling each one of his items into his cart, refusing to pay the 5¢ plastic bag fee that was recently passed in Suffolk County. “Nope,” he shook his head vigorously. “I’ll throw it all in my backseat and carry every single item into my house by hand if I have to.” The checkout clerk, somewhat perplexed, acquiesced. “Alright,” she replied politely. “Whatever you’d prefer - that’s why we ask if you’d like a bag.” As he rolled his overflowing shopping cart away, fellow clerks exchanged raised eyebrows and shrugged. “It’s one thing when they have a handful of items, but $300 worth of food and perishables?” She seemed incredulous. “That’s really standing on principle.”

The clerk went on to list the bizarre scenarios she had witnessed over these last several weeks - from people juggling glass bottles (an attempt which, needless to say, didn’t end so well) to the woman who insisted on cradling about 5 pounds of meat in her arms. All to save a nickel. I have to admit, I was only vaguely aware that this proposed law was set to take effect until I found myself running into the store for some last minute New Year’s Eve snacks. Only then did I see the signs warning of the impending surcharge posted at each register, plastered on every entrance and exit, along with racks of “reusable” plastic bags for sale at each counter. I did some quick math: so, if I buy an allegedly sturdier bag for 10¢ - assuming I get more than two uses out of it, I’ll be

ahead of the game. I considered further the fact that, nearly every time I am in any sort of store but especially those of the supermarket variety - I am repeatedly amazed at the lack of, shall we say, bagging skills employed by most clerks. I invariably wind up with either 27 bags with one or two items in each, or the equally daunting 20 pound bag filled to the brim and unlikely to make it to the car without breaking, let alone up a flight of stairs into my apartment. I’ll bag my own, thanks, I always request. And now, if I’m going to pay for them, you can be sure I’ll be taking matters into my own hands. Preferably without an armful of glass bottles and pork chops to contend with as well. Just when food shopping was beginning to become routine…

The Ever Present Absence

When we lose someone we love, their absence is forever with us. Immediately following our loss we are keenly aware of the absence of our loved one every moment of everyday. We mourn. We cry.
