Rosalind Joel Conservatory for Music and Theatre, performing for honored guest and benefactor, Billy Joel. Legislator Kevin McCaffrey said, “Kassidy has always dedicated herself to great causes. It is nice to see Nassau BOCES and the Long Island High School for the Performing Arts recognize her for her talent, positive energy, awareness and connection to the community. She has a very bright future and we, as a community, are very proud of her.” Kassidy has been a
mentor, a role model, and a tremendous positive influence to other students. Kassidy was presented the award nearly nine months after the ceremony was cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Kassidy received the award in the company of Susan Bergtram from BOCES, Suffolk County Legislator Kevin McCaffrey, Lindenhurst Village Trustee Joan Masterson, Lindenhurst Superintendent Dan Giordano, and her family.

Angels of Long Island is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that somewhat formed itself back in 2015. Debbie and Brittany, a mother and daughter duo turned a small Facebook group into a fast growing nonprofit organization that helps countless Long Islanders in need. Six years ago these two ladies knew of someone in need of clothing and simply wanted to see if they could be of help. They decided to start a Facebook group in hopes of spreading the word and receiving donations for this person in need. They posted a message and went on with their day, later checking in to find themselves overwhelmed with the response. Whoever doubts that there aren’t people with good hearts that are willing to help a neighbor in need is wrong, fortunately! Debbie and Brittany named the Facebook group Angels of Long Island and members would post about ways they could help others in crisis on Long Island. The group continued to gain in momentum and members, so much so that Debbie and Brittany decided to open up a storefront location in Patchogue called Angels of Long Island. Their slogan Neighbors helping neighbors is a great reflection of what this thriving thrift store/boutique/donation center does. “We work so hard to keep our store clean and beautiful so that all of our customers who walk through our doors feels a sense of dignity and respect shopping at our store,” says Debbie. “We are not like your average thrift store! We carry designer brands and offer a unique experience. I did not expect to be running a thriving non-profit organization that has a storefront on Long Island and helps so many in need when I made that Facebook group years ago. What has come since that group was formed is truly a miracle.”
The mission of this non-profit is to assist and advocate for people in our Long Island community who are in need of assistance. Their goal is to empower people to overcome poverty and live prosperous lives. They truly provide a wide range of services and goods to people in crisis, however anyone can come shop at their Patchogue store, which has recently expanded, located at 350-23 East Main Street. The store is proud to take many types of donations. They now accept bottle and can donations every MondaySaturday from 9AM-3PM, where you can simply pull up curbside, pop your trunk and a team member will take the donations for you. All bottles and cans must be marked New York state deposit and no broken glass bottles are able to be accepted. Please remember to separate glass items from plastic items before you donate them. Pickups at your residence are available for large quantities of recyclables. Additionally, they accept other donations, such as new or gently used clothing, housewares, home decor and furniture. All proceeds from this store go directly to help Long Island residents in need. Lastly, if you have some free time on your hands and are comfortable volunteering at the store, please contact Debbie at 631.205.3458. During this pandemic, Angels of Long Island is short staffed and looking for help. Their store is cleaned every morning and masks are required there. Please only consider volunteering if you are not showing any covid symptoms. Everyone’s safety is their first priority. “Whoever is generous to the poor lends to the Lord, and he will reward them for what they have done.” Proverbs 19:17

Kassidy Rieder, a 2020 graduate of Lindenhurst High School and Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Performing Arts, was honored Wednesday at the Lindenhurst Village Green Gazebo by Susan Bergtram, the Nassau BOCES Board President, for her devotion and support of public education. Kassidy was nominated and awarded the 2020 Nassau BOCES Education Award. The award is given annually to individuals and organizations whose extraordinary actions contribute to accomplishing the education goals of Nassau BOCES by ensuring students of all ages and abilities reach their highest potential. During her three years at the performing arts school Kassidy was a standout and received many honors and invitations to perform at prestigious events and ceremonies allowing her to showcase her talents. She sang the National Anthem at the 2009 9/11 Memorial Ceremony, a solo at the Tony Bennet Exploring the Arts Gallery, and was a soloist at the dedication ceremony of the

Why does NY State have such restrictive guidelines for animal hospitals?

The NY State government has put detailed guidelines in place for all businesses, not just veterinarians. For example, medical facilities are required to screen patients before admitting them into the facility.
However right now we are required to follow guidelines issued by New York State that state “Curbside intake and pickup of animals should be used, wherever practical, to minimize the numbers of clients in waiting areas and exam rooms.”* Although that creates a lot of extra work for our staff, we are committed to complying with the NY State safety guidelines during the COVID-19 crisis, and to protect our client’s health and safety. *Exceptions can be made in situations like euthanasia
Are these still necessary? Restrictions are lifted on other things. By July 2020, restrictions like curbside check-in have helped reduce the number of people diagnosed with COVID-19 in New York State down from over 10,000 a day to below 1,000. At the same time we have seen infections rise dramatically in other states who had fewer restrictions.

Suffolk County Legislator Kevin McCaffrey recently announced that he has been selected by the Republican caucus to be GOP Minority Leader for 2021. The announcement comes after Legislator Tom Cilmi, who has held the title for the last three years, declined to seek the leadership position for a fourth year. Cilmi, who is termlimited out of office at the end of this year, said “It has
been a privilege leading my Republican colleagues for the last three years. Synthesizing a variety of perspectives and finding consensus is not always easy, but I look back proudly on what we’ve been able to accomplish. We were able to put the brakes on borrowing, reducing the debt burden on our taxpayers by tens of millions of dollars. We were able to successfully address a multitude of district-specific concerns for
our members. We influenced legislation put forth by our Democrat colleagues, perhaps none more remarkable than recent changes to Article 6, which ultimately passed unanimously. We passed Republican-sponsored bills that were important to our caucus. Finally, we raised tens of thousands of dollars to help Republicans, including freshman Legislator Anthony Piccirillo, get elected. “Equally as important to
me is the manner in which we conducted our work, opting for productive compromise and collaborative give and take as opposed to the combative, antagonistic approach which characterizes so much of today’s politics. The day honors Martin Luther King, Jr., an influential leader in the civil rights movement who embraced nonviolent activism. Despite his status as an advocate for nonviolence, Martin Luther King, Jr. was violently gunned down in Memphis, Tennessee in 1968. A campaign to declare his birthday a national holiday was started shortly after King’s assassination. However, the holiday was not officially observed until 1986, and that observation was not nationwide. It was not until 2000 that all 50 states observed Martin Luther King Day.
