Champions Recognized Lindenhurst Middle School students were honored at the Breakfast for Champions celebration coordinated by middle school educator Kathy Curran on December 19th. Held at the Lindencrest Diner, the breakfast, now in its 20th year, honors students who exemplify Lindy Pride at the middle school. Students are nominated by teachers for

a variety of reasons and are recognized publically in front of proud parents, teachers and peers. With proud parents and teachers looking on, students received their certificates of merit from Principal Frank Naccarato who told them how they each have a tremendous amount of power. “You have the power every day to turn your

The Diocese of Rockville Centre’s Catholic Committee on Scouting in conjunction with Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Lindenhurst hosted an International Peace Light Ceremony and Advent Lessons and Carols featuring scripture readings and songs of the Advent season on Friday, December 2nd. Reverend Monsignor Joseph DeGrocco welcomed everyone. Diocesan Scouting Chaplain, Fr. Frank Zero, a Parochial Vicar at Our Lady of Perpetual Help also attended the service. Approximately 300 people attended the service including Scouts and Scouters from Nassau and Suffolk County in addition to the parishioners of Our Lady of Perpetual Help R.C. Church and many from across Long Island. The Lessons and Carols featured children, teen and adult choirs as well as a full complement of instrumentalists. Refreshments and fellowship followed. In addition to the sharing of the Peace Light in Lindenhurst, the flame was passed from candle to candle and to individual’s lanterns when it was also shared at St Joseph’s RC Church (Ronkonkoma) on Sunday, December 4th, at their Lessons and Carols. The Peace Light was used as part of the mass on Friday, December 8th (a holy feast day) which preceded our tree lighting ceremony that evening. Father Antony had Santa bring the flame in during his homily and

lit the altar candles with it. Temple Beth Chai of Hauppauge used the Peace Light during the Hebrew School’s lighting of the Chanukah Menorah during their holiday celebration on Thursday, December 14th. Additionally, it was shared in East Northport at Cub Scout Pack 5’s monthly Pack Night on December 9th and the Peace Light was shared at the Matinecock District’s monthly Scouting

Roundtable meeting (held at John Glenn HS, Elwood) on Thursday, December 14th. The tradition of the Peace Light started in Austria in the late 1980’s. The “Peace Light” campaign was originally organized by the Austrian Broadcasting Co. and is still part of a great charitable mission for handicapped children and people in need. Each year,

event. While I was speaking with Pastor Jim Ryan, he mentioned the inspiration behind being mobile. He explained, “Jesus didn’t make others come to Him to be helped, He went to them…that is why we operate in a mobile manner!” Lighthouse Mission’s Youth Outreach operates on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Saturdays. Every Tuesday, they open their facility to high school students and offer them food, entertainment and time to socialize in a Christian setting. Every Wednesday, they do the same for middle school students and, on the first and third Saturday of each month, they offer this service for students K-5. All of these events are free of charge and open to everyone. Week after week, many youth on Long Island gather for these events and enjoy a wonderful time together; for many children, the meal they receive at an event will be their only meal of the day. There is an overwhelming amount of people on Long Island who are in need, not only physically, but emotionally as well. Lighthouse Mission is a registered non-profit that truly cares for those they serve. They operate 100% on donations, receiving no government help. If you are interested in becoming involved with this organization, there are plenty of ways to do so! They gladly accept clothing and food donations and currently are specifically in need of winter coat donations. As far as volunteering, they accept walk-on volunteers at all of their Food Outreach events. All ages are welcome to volunteer! Providing Hope Beyond the Food ... this is a phrase often used at Lighthouse Mission, a mobile food pantry on Long Island. This organization was founded in 1992 by Sister Elaine when she received a vision from God to “Share the Gospel of Jesus and Feed the Poor.” From there, she humbly took to the streets of Long Island with 10 bologna and cheese sandwiches and did just that. Lighthouse Mission currently reaches 2,000 people per week with the same mission: sharing the Gospel of Jesus and feeding the poor. Pastor Jim Ryan is now the president of this inspiring ministry, and the story of his journey to become so is so inspiring that it left me speechless. After recently meeting with him and touring their quite busy facility, located at 1543 Montauk Highway in Bellport, I was extremely moved. I felt excitement for all they are doing and experienced such a renewed sense of hope. They are truly set apart from many other organizations because they purposefully accomplish much more than just feeding the hungry. Lighthouse Mission operates a Food Outreach as well as a Youth Outreach. Their Food Outreach operates weekly on Mondays (in Coram and Ronkonkoma), Wednesdays (in Central Islip), Thursdays (in Shirley and Port Jefferson Station), Fridays (in Riverhead and Centereach) and Saturdays (in Patchogue and Bellport). Instead of operating this outreach from a single location, they chose to go mobile and travel to different locales where those in need can line up and receive plenty of nutritional food, gentlyused clothing and hear the word of God from one of the pastors working the

Snowed In Last week’s column was entitled Coming Out of the Cold; this week, Snowed In. Sensing a theme here? January has always been my least favorite month. Apologies to those with birthdays and other assorted milestones which fall within this 31 day period; but, with the exception of New Year’s Day, I find nothing particularly exciting about it. For those who love snow, sure, there’s the potential for a few substantial blizzards to blow our way. But mostly, it’s a month that begins with the daunting process of undecking the halls and ends with faint hopes of a furry critter crawling out of a hole to determine just how much more cold weather we’ve yet to endure until spring beckons. Of course, let’s not forget the seemingly endless parade of holiday bills piling

up in the mailbox as we speak, as the horrifying realization of just how much we spent the previous month begins to set in. Joyful. But, as with anything, January is something we must contend with, for better or worse. And so, we attempt to make the best of it by cooking up big pots of chili, baking cookies and settling in with our fuzzy slippers and pajamas as we once again pick up that book we’ve been meaning to finish since we started it back on the beach sometime in July. There are the movies we never got around to seeing in theaters that have since found their way to our cable channels, maybe a Netflix series or two to binge watch, even – dare we say it – some long overdue cleaning out of the closets. {But not the dreaded Christmas Closet. Project Warmth Open One out of three households on Long Island do not earn enough to make ends meet, affecting their ability to heat their homes during the bitter winter months. United Way of Long Island’s Project Warmth has helped nearly 200 families, heat their homes since the program opened on December 4th, and with the frigid temperatures currently affecting our area, the critical need for this program is at its height. As Long Island’s only non-governmental, Islandwide emergency heating fund, Project Warmth is available all winter as a safety net for individuals and families who are facing energy insecurity and are unable to pay their heating bill. The program provides a one-time grant payment directly to oil and utility

companies on behalf of the family, allowing them to use their available funds to pay for essentials like food or medication. “More than 250,000 families on Long Island struggle to afford basics like food, transportation and medical care,” explained Theresa A. Regnante, President and CEO of United Way of Long Island. “During the winter months, the added financial stress of heat can shatter their budget – especially when they are already living paycheck-topaycheck. Project Warmth eliminates dangerous choices such as leaving the stove on, or using space heaters for these families. Children don’t need to sleep in their winter coats, seniors don’t need to keep their oven burning to stay warm. Parents feel secure

knowing that they can now afford their other critical monthly expenses.” Those in need of assistance can call United Way’s 2-1-1 Long Island helpline by dialing 2-1-1 or 888.774.7633 seven days a week from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. to be connected to a United Way partner agency that will help them apply for a Project Warmth grant. (CCCS) recently held its largest ever Champions of Children Luncheon at the Hamlet Golf & Country Club in Commack, New York. “We are grateful to all our Champions of Children guests. Martinez was honored to be recognized by the Child Care Council of Suffolk as the 2017 Champions of Children honoree recognizing that “quality, affordable, accessible child care is essential to the safety of Long Island’s children and the sustainability of Long Island’s economy.” In a letter to CCCS, New York State Assemblyman Andrew P. Raia congratulated the Child Care Council of Suffolk and Honoree Jorge Martinez, writing that he “congratulate(s) and

On December 11th, Sons of AMVETS Post 48 members gathered at Post 48 to wrap toys that would be donated to the children of Air National Guard Members serving at the Air National Guard Rescue Wing based at Frances Gabreski Airport located in Westhampton Beach. AMVETS Post 48 Sons used fundraising monies to purchase toys for the children. The Sons of AMVETS were assisted by AMVETS Post 48 Ladies Auxiliary Members and AMVETS Members with the wrapping of the toys. This donation was initiated because the AMVETS Post 48 Sons wanted to thank the Air National Guard for the service that they are providing to our country.
