Lindenhurst Champions Recognized Lindenhurst Middle School students were honored at the Breakfast for Champions celebration coordinated by middle school educator Kathy Curran on Dec. 17. Held at the Lindencrest Diner, the breakfast, now in its 21st year, honors students who exemplify Lindy Pride at the middle
school. Students are nominated by teachers for a variety of reasons and are recognized publically in front of proud parents, teachers and peers. With proud parents and teachers looking on, students received their certificates of merit from Principal Frank Naccarato who told them how they
each have a tremendous amount of power. Also in attendance at the breakfast were assistant principals Dr. Jennifer Cracco, Joseph Furno and Patricia Natale, as well as library media specialist Jennifer Freedman and middle school CSE Chairperson Kathleen Petrenko.

Marcedo spoke about many of the obstacles she faced growing up in Brooklyn, born in Puerto Rico to parents who didn’t speak much English. She spoke about her educational journey and the struggles she faced. But, she said, when she took the job as a leave replacement in Copiague, she knew she had finally
found her calling. “I found teachers I can look up to and aspire to be like,” Marcedo said. “I learned that it’s fine to make mistakes. I have found a career that I am passionate about and I learn every day from my colleagues and my students.” Her advice to the students: find your passion and your purpose and find lessons in the failures. After a brief question and answer session, the students worked in teams and reflected on the lessons learned. Each team created a poster board and shared their thoughts in a brief presentation with their peers.

In celebration of the districtwide effort of community giveback, this holiday season the fifth grade students in Kerri Maroney’s class at Great Neck Road Elementary School in the Copiague School District organized a schoolwide collection of
goods to help soldiers in need this holiday season. The class collected donations of nonperishable food items, leftover Halloween candy and toiletries to donate to soldiers and veterans from the school community. Their “stockings for
soldiers” campaign yielded almost a dozen boxes of donated goods. The class also created handmade cards to include with the packages. Members of the local VFW picked up the boxes and will coordinate the delivery before the holidays.

The Y of Long Island has many different branches: East Hampton, Patchogue, Holtsville, Huntington, Bay Shore and Glen Cove. They also run the Boulton Center for the Performing Arts in Bay Shore and the YMCA Family Services (a counseling center) in Holtsville. This January they kicked off their Annual Support Campaign, which provides scholarships to children, teens, adults, seniors and families in need. These scholarships provide access to the YMCA for membership, programs and services such as swim lessons, pre-school, before and after school, summer day camp, health and wellness programs and chronic disease prevention and recovery programs such as LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA for cancer survivors,
Moving for Better Balance, a fall prevention program, EnhanceFitness for people with arthritis and more. The Y believes that when people come together for a common cause, the entire community is strengthened. When someone becomes a volunteer, they have the opportunity to share their blessings with those who need it most. You can take an active role in strengthening your community by volunteering at the Y! Volunteers can serve on their Board of Directors/ Board of Managers/ committees, raise funds to ensure their organization is accessible to all members of the community, motivate and support youth, extend a hand to help adults who want to do more, be more or live healthier, advocate for their efforts and participate in opportunities to give back and support neighbors. SECOND GRADE SCIENTISTS STUDY MATTER - The second graders at Deauville Gardens West Elementary School in the Copiague School District are learning all about water cycles and the different states of matter this December. Students in Ms. Orlando’s class conducted a science experiment, filling a clear bag with water taped on the window. Each day, they observe the changes in the water line. Students in Ms. Bennett’s class built structures using different blocks to represent the different particles that make up matter. Another group worked with mystery bags, using their senses to hypothesize what was in each bag. In Ms. McCormack’s class, students worked on their Chromebooks to study different stages of matter. Referee Of The Year
By Randy Vogt, Director of Public Relations, Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association December 15, 2019 Founded in 1971, the Long Island Soccer Referees Association (LISRA) is one of the oldest organizations in the Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association (ENYYSA) and the largest referee association by far in the state. For the past five decades, LISRA has been providing refs for Long Island Junior Soccer League (LIJSL) games and has assigned officials to an estimated 750,000 soccer games since its inception. The LISRA Holiday Party at the James E. Allen Elementary School in Dix Hills on Thursday night, December 12 saw awards given to 16 referees who have particularly made a difference on Long Island soccer fields. LISRA Trustee Cathy Caldwell of Copiague
was selected as the 2019 Referee of the Year. “I’ve been refereeing for 20 years and I have loved every minute of it! I think that I have worked with all of you over the years. Thank you for the joy that you have brought into my life,” Caldwell stated. “Every time I step on the field, I feel privileged.” The Silver Whistle Award for excellence in officiating went to Valley Stream’s Jack Shippy. Shippy’s neighbor, Ian Reid of Lynbrook, received the Emrys Joseph Rookie of the Year Award. Joseph was a very personable LISRA ref and member of the Board of Directors who passed away 29 years ago and this award has been given annually in his honor ever since. Gilon Goldman of Holtsville won the Rising Star Award for young referee of the year. Greenlawn’s Arianna
Starost and Westbury’s Emanuel Ventura received the Mario Boltri Assistant Referee Award. Boltri is a former LISRA President who created the chapter’s wildly successful assistant referee program after the turn of the millennium and there are now 640 LISRA assistant referees. Assistant referees also honored by LISRA on that cold winter night were Julia Desiano (Mount Sinai), Michael Flores (Medford), Joe LoNegro (Smithtown), Gaetano Parisi (North Bellmore), Isabella Pedone (Lindenhurst), siblings Amanda and Andrew Pietrofeso (Glen Oaks), John Reid (Lynbrook), Scott Thorley (Manorville) and Megan Zabrouski (Bethpage). The AR awards are based on the ratings of the refs who grade the assistants after every game plus comments from the refs as well as the assignors.
