Throughout our local communities many people have heard of the YMCA of Long Island but don’t realize all that they do. From education to exercise, volunteerism to volleyball, preventative health to preschool, the Y doesn’t just strengthen bodies, but it also strengthens communities through programs. The YMCA of Long Island is truly a leading nonprofit organization that works daily to improve lives through programs and services that nurture youth, foster healthy living and inspire social responsibility. Simply put, their mission is to improve the quality of life of children, adults and families through programs that develop body, mind and spirit. They welcome people of all ages, from all walks of life and from all backgrounds to join them in making communities stronger and making Long Island a better place to live, work and play! In 2019, the organization celebrated 100 Years of Transforming Lives and is excited to continue to do so in 2020 and beyond. The Y of Long Island has many different branches: East Hampton, Patchogue, Holtsville, Huntington, Bay Shore and Glen Cove. They also run the Boulton Center for the Performing Arts in Bay Shore and the YMCA Family

Services (a counseling center) in Holtsville. This January they kicked off their Annual Support Campaign, which provides scholarships to children, teens, adults, seniors and families in need. These scholarships provide access to the YMCA for membership, programs and services such as swim lessons, pre-school in 11 school districts across the island, before and after school, summer day camp, health and wellness programs and chronic disease prevention and recovery programs such as LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA for cancer survivors, Moving for Better Balance, a fall prevention program, EnhanceFitness for people with arthritis and more. The YMCA of Long Island offers so much and can make a large difference in your life or the life of others. Registration for their winter programs begins on January 19th. Maybe 2020 is the year for you or someone you know to jump in and get involved in a great organization like the Y? Annual Scouting Peace Light Distribution The Diocese of Rockville Centre’s Catholic Committee on Scouting in conjunction with Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Lindenhurst hosted an International Peace Light Ceremony and Advent Lessons and Carols featuring scripture readings and songs of the Advent season on Saturday, December7, 2019. Reverend Monsignor Joseph DeGrocco welcomed everyone. Diocesan Scouting Chaplain, Fr. Frank Zero, and Deacon Thomas Lemme, Vice Chairman of the Diocesan Scouting Committee, were also in attendance. Approximately 300 people attended the service including Scouts and Scouters from Nassau and Suffolk County in addition to the parishioners of Our Lady of Perpetual Help R.C. Church and many from across Long Island. The Peace Light flame was passed from candle to candle and to individual’s lanterns. The Lessons and Carols featured children, teen and adult choirs as well as a full complement of instrumentalists. Refreshments and fellowship followed.

In addition to the sharing of the Peace Light in Lindenhurst, the flame was passed from candle to candle and to individual’s lanterns. It was brought to Boy Troop 125 (Commack)’s weekly Boy Scout meeting to share with the scouts and their families as well as the congregation of the Commack United Methodist Church (the Troop’s Sponsor). Father Antony Asir of St. Thomas More RC Church used the Peace Light on Saturday, December 14 as a part of the tree lighting ceremony that evening. Temple Beth Chai of Hauppauge will use the Peace Light during the Religious School’s lighting of the Chanukah Menorah during their holiday celebration on Sunday, December 22. The tradition of the Peace Light started in Austria in the late 1980’s. The “Peace Light” campaign was originally organized by the Austrian Broadcasting Co. and is still part of a great charitable mission for handicapped children and people in need. Each year, a child from Upper Austria

SHARING THE LIGHTING OF CANDLES - Some of the Scouts and Scouters of Suffolk County Council (BSA) and Nassau County’s Theodore Roosevelt Council (Nassau County) who had been in attendance and participated in sharing the lighting of candles with the Peace Light, following the Lessons and Carols ceremony at Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Lindenhurst with the Peace Light in a lantern (which had been shared at JFK Airport’s International Chapel on Thursday, Dec. 5th) fetches the light - a live flame- from the Grotto of the Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem, where Jesus was born. The light is then transported to Vienna, Austria under the auspices of the International Scouting Movement and distributed throughout Europe. In recent years

it has also been brought to the United States. The aim of the Peace Light is to bring people the light and the Peace Message, which encourages everyone, especially Scouts, to actively create peace in their own environment and communities. The Peace Light arrived at JFK Airport on December 6th. During the weeks before Christmas, Scouts distribute the light to now more than 30 European countries. In recent years it has also been brought to the United States through the generosity of Austrian Airlines, and the cooperation of the Brooklyn Catholic Committee on Scouting and the Greater New York Council. This year it is being shared throughout the United States and Canada, and has even being brought to Mexico. In past years the Peace Light has been presented to Pope Francis, Pope Saint John Paul II, Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI, Mikhail Gorbachev, King Hussein of Jordan, members of the LESSONS AND CAROLS CEREMONY - Scouts entering the Lessons and European parliament in Carols ceremony with the Peace Light in a lantern (which had been shared at JFK Strasbourg, and the United Airport’s International Chapel on Thursday, Dec. 5th) at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Nations Troops in Kosovo. in Lindenhurst

PEACE LIGHT CANDLES - Troop 125 (Commack)’s Assistant Scoutmaster/Eagle Scout Dan Jiratano and Committee Member Mary Jiratano (and other congregants at the service) with their lit Peace Light candles, which had been shared from one person to another during the Peace Light ceremonies and service. The first candles were lit from the lantern that held the Peace Light, which was brought to the U.S. from Bethlehem. In December 2001 it was brought to Ground Zero. The International Peace Light is a worldwide symbol of peace and brotherhood. The light is given from one person to another as a gift with the wish for peace and forgiveness among all human beings. Worldwide, communities’ seeking international friendship and peace is a

special concern of all Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, here and abroad. According to the ideals of Scouting, everyone is encouraged, all nations and peoples, through personal contacts to actively create Peace and fear-free living in their environment by being tolerant towards different ethnic, cultural or religious groups.

The eighth grade students of Lindenhurst Middle School schools received a special visit from Thanhha Lai, author of the novels “Inside Out and Back Again,” “Butterfly Yellow,” and “Listen, Slowly.” “Inside Out and Back Again,” which is required reading for all Lindenhurst

eighth graders, is historical fiction, based on the author’s experiences as a refugee during the Vietnam War. She describes her journey to America, where she faced bullying and discrimination. “Her story is truly inspirational and helps to foster a sense of empathy in us all,” said

Author Shares Experiences English teacher Deborah Weinstein. “ Her visit really brought the book to life for our students who loved learning about which elements of the novel were true and which were fiction.” Thanhha Lai has won the Newbery Medal and the National Book Award for Young People’s Literature.
