The American Heart Association says adults should get at least 150 minutes of moderate exercise per week, or 75 minutes of vigorous aerobic activity, and a Harvard University study says that exercise can be an insurance policy for heart health. Today’s seniors have more fitness options at their disposal than ever before. SilverSneakers® is the leading community fitness program for older adults in the United States. SilverSneakers® members can participate in specially curated programs at participating gyms and community centers across the nation. According to the organization, there are more participating fitness locations available than there are Starbucks® coffee establishments. Classes are fit for everyone, no matter their experience level. Those concerned about gym costs

may find that SilverSneakers® already is included in their Medicare Advantage plan for no additional cost. Plus, there is access to healthy living discounts from participating businesses. Canada has begun to develop its own senior-centric fitness programs. The Healthy, Safe and Strong group exercise program is an introduction to safe exercises available for adults age 60 and older in the province of Ontario. The program can help develop better stamina, maintain or improve balance and increase strength and endurance. StrongerU Senior Fitness is a relatively new program of pre-choreographed group fitness offering instruction in four program types: cardio, strength training, stretching, and circuit training. The program addresses a need in Canada for quality and consistent senior fitness programing. As studies show that engaging in physical activity is the most effective way for aging men and women to stay healthy, more adults may be compelled to join fitness groups that cater to the 50-and-over market.

It was an indoor snow day for the first graders at Susan E. Wiley Elementary School in the Copiague School District when they celebrated the white weather with plenty of hands-on lessons. Dressed in their warmest pajamas, students started the day by reading snow-themed books and practicing their writing and math skills with snow-based activities. As

a science experiment, the students hypothesized about whether or not oil and water in a mason jar could mix together or stay separated. The resulting experiment, with a bit of added glitter, created a snowstorm in a jar. Using baking soda and hair conditioner, the students even made their own snow inside the classroom. Snow paint was created using flour, salt

and water, which results in a fluffy art creation. Before the students had a chance to snack on cheesy snowballs, they ended the day’s activities with an indoor snowball fight. Each student wrote a kind message on a piece of paper. They crumbled their papers, tossed them at each other and read aloud the positive messages at the end of the snowball fight.

PAINTING WATERCOLOR PICTURES - Deauville Gardens East Elementary School in the Copiague School District hosted a pajama literacy night for students in kindergarten, first and second grade on Feb. 6. Deauville Gardens East teachers performed a readers theater of Deauville Gardens East social worker and author Lysa Mullady’s newest picture book “Red, Yellow, Blue.” The students then went back to their classroom and painted watercolor pictures in response to the book. Meeting twice a week in small teams for a 10-week season, a volunteer coach will teach girls life skills through engaging lessons and fun movement activities. At each season’s conclusion, all girls from teams across Long Island will meet up for a celebratory 5K running event. This organization also runs a program called Heart & Sole. This is their middle school program that meets the unique needs of girls in 6th-8th grade. Heart & Sole takes girls as a whole into consideration body, brain, heart, spirit and social connection - in a positive and structured space, where participants can learn about themselves, explore new ideas, cultivate empathy and stregthen connections. Running is incorporated into each lesson to encourage physical wellness. These girls also prepare for a celebratory 5K event at the end of the program. The upcoming spring season

for both programs will begin the week of March 16th and is shaping up to be their largest season yet! Too Much Sleep Can Be Harmful Lack of sufficient sleep is a problem for millions of people across the globe. But what about too much sleep? Though busy men and women might think it’s impossible to get too much sleep, excessive sleep is nothing to joke about. According to the National Sleep Foundation, most adults need between seven and nine hours of sleep per night (the NSF notes that a small percentage of people may need 10 hours of sleep per night). People who routinely sleep more than seven to nine hours may have an underlying health concern. For example, the NSF notes that a recent study found that routinely sleeping more than 10 hours per night can be linked to metabolic syndrome. The Mayo Clinic says metabolic syndrome refers to a cluster of conditions that occur together and increase a person’s risk for serious health issues, including heart disease, stroke and type 2 diabetes. Obesity, headache and back pain are some

additional potential side effects of excessive sleep. The Division of Sleep Medicine at Harvard Medical School notes that genetics and age are significant factors in determining the amount of sleep healthy individuals need. However, young adults should resist the notion that they need less than seven hours of sleep per night because they’re young, while older adults should similarly avoid thinking that they need more sleep simply because they’re aging. As the NSF guidelines suggest, the sweet spot for healthy adults is typically between seven and nine hours of sleep per night. A good night’s rest is an essential component of a healthy lifestyle. But adults must recognize that excessive amounts of sleep can be just as detrimental as inadequate sleep. Individuals can speak with their physicians to determine their specific sleep needs.

American Cancer Society Welcomes New Hotel Partners Cancer patients traveling far from home for treatment across Long Island and in Queens need not worry where to stay during their care due to a new partnership agreement between the American Cancer Society, Courtyard Marriott and Springhill Suites. If you’re a cancer patient and your doctor says, “Your best hope for a cure is in another town,” your first thought may be, “Where am I going to stay and how am I going to pay for it?” The American Cancer Society can help. The Society works together with hotels through its Hotel Partners Program to provide complimentary and/ or reduced rate rooms to cancer patients who need to travel out of town to receive treatment. One hotel in Jamaica, NY and another in Ronkonkoma, NY, have joined the Society’s Hotel Partners Program, providing complimentary rooms to cancer patients who must travel across Long Island for treatment.
