The Charity of The Month for February is: Girls on the Run of Long Island www.gotrlongisland.org Girls on the Run is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. They run a physical activity-based positive youth development program that is designed to enhance girls’ social, psychological and physical skills and behaviors to help them successfully navigate life experiences.

Their upcoming spring season will begin the week of March 16th and is shaping up to be their largest season yet! This organization truly makes a difference! See the results from those who have participated:

They serve girls in grades 3-5 and inspire them to be joyful, healthy and confident by using a fun, interactive curriculum, which creatively integrates running! Meeting twice a week in small teams for a 10-week season, a volunteer coach will teach girls life skills through engaging lessons and fun movement activities. At each season’s conclusion, all girls from teams across Long Island will meet up for a celebratory 5K running event. This year’s 5K event is scheduled for Saturday, June 6 at Hofstra University, where over 1000 individuals will run, volunteer or spectate to celebrate!

of the most romantic countries in the world, France can be an ideal place to participate in Valentine’s Day traditions. The French have an old custom called “une loterie d’amour,” which is a drawing for love. Single men and women of all ages once entered houses that faced one another and took turns calling out to one another to find romantic matches. The men could refuse the match and leave the woman looking for another man to call on. Women who were not paired up would light a bonfire and damn the men who rejected them. The French government eventually banned the practice because of rowdy crowds. Italy Italian lovers celebrate Valentine’s Day in much the same way as Americans. One interesting Valentine’s tradition in Italy is locking padlocks to different structures, which is called “Lucchetti dell’Amore (locks of love).” Couples attach the locks to bridges, railings and lamp posts, inscribe their names and throw away the key. QRA Alumnae recall their happy days and reunited at Dominican Village to reminisce at the all Class years reunion. Graduates from class years 1952 through 1988 attended. Basketball Coach Receives National Women In Sports Honor Copiague School District celebrated National Girls and Women in Sports Day by honoring Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School junior varsity girls basketball coach Kia Wright at the team’s last home game on Jan. 29. Wright was a standout athlete during her time in the Copiague School District, earning a spot as one of the top scorers on Long Island by amassing 2,148 points in her high school career. She was an All-Long Island and AllState player who helped the Eagles win two Long Island titles and a state championship in 2003. Wright played at St.

John’s University, where she was a four-time Big East player and the only player in school history to score more than 1,500 points and more than 400 assists in a career. After graduating from St. Johns, she competed at the professional ranks for Puerto Rico and Croatia, and in 2015 was inducted into the St. John’s Athletic Hall of Fame. Wright has been an assistant coach for the Adelphi Panthers and is currently in her third year as the junior varsity girls basketball head coach for Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School.

Recognizing Top 20 Students Copiague School District recognized and celebrated the accomplishments of its top 20 students in the Class of 2020 with a luncheon on Jan. 24 in the school’s cafeteria. Board of Education members, central administrators, invited faculty members and the students’ family members joined the top 20 students for the event. Each top 20 student had the opportunity to invite one special teacher from the district who had a positive influence on them. Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School Principal Joseph Agosta welcomed guests and thanked the family members for their support of the top 20 students. “I have a little advice for you as you move forward from here,”

he said. “What matters foremost in life is that you be someone special; not just do something special. To make a difference in the world, you have to be not only a great person but great in what you do and great in who you are. As you move from high school to college and continue your education, I encourage you to challenge yourself to become a great person. Get involved in all that life has to offer. Never be afraid to try something new. Always surround yourself with people who make you want to be a better person and bring out the best in you.” Mr. Agosta then offered a brief biography of each student, noting their accomplishments, awards and future goals and endeavors for college and

their career. Each student was called to the podium to express their gratitude to the teacher who inspired them during their time in Copiague School District.
