Students at Harding Avenue Elementary School in the Lindenhurst Union Free School District recently held a special assembly to kick off the student council run Pennies for Patients campaign, in association with the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. LLS campaign manager Meagan Modell spoke to students about the campaign and how they can be “superheroes” by fundraising for the charity and its patients. She inspired the students by saying how their efforts, no matter how small, can make be impactful. Pennies for Patients is a science-based, service learning program that allows schools to work together as a class, grade and building to reach goals of fundraising. All monies raised will go to the LLS in support of research, patient support, patient education and advocacy.

YOUTH MEMBERS RECOGNIZED - On January 15th Suffolk County Legislator Kevin McCaffrey, Babylon Town Clerk Gerry Compitello, Babylon Town Councilman Terry McSweeney and Lori-Ann Novello on behalf of the Lindenhurst Community Cares Coalition, joined the 1st Pct Explorer’s meeting to recognize the youth members of this special organization. Under distinguished leadership of Officer Margiotta, the members achieved the President’s Silver Award for Community Service hours. Each participant received Certificates of Recognition issued by Suffolk County Legislator Kevin McCaffrey, the Town of Babylon Supervisor Rich Schaffer, and the Board of Directors of Lindy Cares. The Explorers dedication of time and service contributed to the success of so many charitable events in the Town of Babylon communities throughout 2019. DMV Urges New Yorkers To Prepare For Winter Driving Conditions The New York State Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) and the Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee (GTSC) joined today in offering tips to winterize your vehicle and to adjust to driving in more challenging weather conditions. Drivers are also reminded that they can now install snow tires on their vehicles. Under state law, snow tires can be used from October 16 through April 30. “The weather outside does not have to be frightful,” said Mark J.F. Schroeder, DMV Commissioner and GTSC Chair. “By taking steps to prepare your vehicle and yourself, you can drive in winter conditions safely and with confidence.” To make sure your vehicle is ready for the winter, GTSC recommends asking yourself a series of questions about its

preparedness: How’s the tread on your vehicles’ tires? Is the recommended amount of antifreeze in the radiator? Is the windshield washer reservoir full? If you have been driving on salted and sanded roads, have you cleaned off your lights and windows? Will the heater and defroster clear icy and fogged windows? And do you have enough gas just in case you get stuck in slow moving traffic? When you’re ready to start driving, here are some tips to follow: Before moving your car, be certain to remove all snow and ice from it including the top of the vehicle’s roof. Snow and ice flying off your car can cause driving distractions for you and other drivers. It could hit and damage other

vehicles or cause a crash. Warm up the car so the defroster has a chance to clear the windows. Turn on your headlights when you turn on your windshield wipers. New York State law makes this mandatory. Do not exceed the speed limit and always adjust your speed to the road conditions. Leave plenty of room between your vehicle and the one ahead of you. Don’t try to pass or weave in and out of traffic. Even if your vehicle has good traction in ice and snow, you must be prepared to react if other drivers start to slide. Familiarize yourself with the vehicles you drive before you take them out in inclement weather. Do not drive during ice or snow storms unless it is absolutely necessary.

It begins the last Sunday in January, which in 2020 is January 26th, and runs through Saturday, February 1st. The theme for Catholic Schools Week is ‘Catholic Schools: Learn. Serve. Lead. Dachau. A very difficult place to visit but a part of history. Walt Disney’s Neuschwanstein Castle is the next stop and one of the most beautiful places to visit in the world. Not far from there are the Hallein Salt Mines. They will travel deep into the mountains where the border of Germany and Austria are crossed as they make their descent into the mountain. This is another breathtaking spot on the tour. Several hundred yards from the entrance to the salt mine is a Neolithic camp, 5000 years old, which is an eye opener for the students. Next they travel to Salzburg, Austria to visit the home of Mozart and explore where some of the scenes from the Sound of Music were made. They are then on their way to Vienna,

The Ever Present Absence When we lose someone we love, their absence is forever with us. Immediately following our loss we are keenly aware of the absence of our loved one every moment of everyday. We mourn. We cry. We learn to cope with the loss of their physical presence, their encouraging words, their love and support. During the first year we are without our parent, spouse, sibling or child, we are aware of their absence every day. As we sit and watch a graduation or attend a wedding or witness a baptism or just observe something that we used to share together; like watching a mother and child eating an ice cream cone or sitting on the beach, we think for that one special moment, “I wish mom (or dad, our sister, brother, spouse or our child, etc.) were here.” Acknowledging their ever-present absence from our lives-not despairing, for we hope to meet again, just in the moment realizing their ever present absence from our lives.

The YMCA of Long Island is a leading non-profit organization that works daily to improve lives through programs and services that nurture youth, foster healthy living and inspire social responsibility. Healthy School Lunches Packing the kids’ lunches for school means you have control over which foods they are eating. Parents can manage nutritious meals even when the kids are at school. According to the American Heart Association, American kids consume 35-50 percent of their daily calories while in school. So, healthy lunches can have a big impact on children’s health through good nutrition. Today, about one in three American kids and teens is overweight or obese, nearly triple the rate in 1963. Among children today, obesity is causing a broad range of health problems that previously weren’t seen until adulthood. These include high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes and elevated blood cholesterol levels. Nutrition can go a long way toward preventing these illnesses in children. Here are some budget-friendly, creative ideas from the American Heart Association to help keep kids happy and healthy at lunchtime: Make a Smarter Sandwich While some kids prefer the same thing every day, many kids want variety in their lunches. Sandwiches are easy, portable and kid-friendly. · Use different breads like 100% whole-wheat

Students Meet ‘Twisted Tales’ Author

Students of Albany Avenue Elementary School in the Lindenhurst Union Free School District recently explored the writing process with Jen Calonita, author of the “Fairy Tale Reform School” book series among others. Calonita spoke about her early days of writing as an entertainment

journalist, a position she held for 10 years prior to writing her first young adult series, “Secrets of My Hollywood Life.” She shared with the students how she came to write various book series including “Fairy Tale Reform School,” “Royal Academy Rebels” and “Twisted Tales.”

During each of the two school assemblies, the author explored writing strategies and the process of writing and publishing a book. Later in the day, Calonita expanded upon this information as she conducted a writer’s workshop session with fourth grade students.

Remove the wings from the smoker or grill and put half of them into a bowl, cover with the sauce, and toss. Repeat with the remaining wings and serve on a platter, with the blue cheese dip on the side. Each year, millions of people across the globe celebrate a unique holiday that is rich in tradition, spectacle and pageantry. The Chinese New Year, also known as the Lunar New Year or Spring Festival, is celebrated around the world, even by people who do not trace their heritage back to China. In China, Chinese New Year marks the end of the coldest days on the calendar and welcomes spring with new beginnings and the start of planting season. This spectacular holiday follows the lunar calendar, so there is no set date for the event. The Lunar New Year begins between January 21 and February 20 each year and lasts about 15 days. In 2020, the celebration begins on Saturday, January 25. Fireworks are a large part of Chinese New Year festivals. According to Chinese mythology, a monster named “Nian” would come about every New Year’s Eve, forcing people to hide in their homes. A brave boy fought Nian off
