The Book Fairies, located in Freeport, NY, is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that accepts donations of new and gently used books and connects them with organizations throughout all five boroughs and Long Island that do not have the funds to foster the love of reading. Some of those organizations are hospitals, schools, veteran organizations and soup kitchens. Reading materials can not only foster literacy and academic success, but they can also provide a respite from personal struggles and nature a love of reading across age groups. Every book that they collect goes through sorting, their process of thoroughly examining the type of book and condition it’s in. With only 2 staff members, The Book Fairies heavily relies on the work of selfless volunteers.

The Book Fairies does more than just impact their local community; they are also dedicated to supporting literacy programs in underdeveloped nations around the world. Some of the books they receive that are in fair to average condition are packaged for partnering organizations to be shipped overseas! If a situation is a concern, find out what God would have you do and let go of the anxiety. If you can’t do anything about a situation, forget it. 12. Live within your budget; don’t use credit cards for ordinary purchases. 13. Have backups; an extra car key in your wallet, an extra house key buried in the garden, extra stamps, etc. 14. KMS (Keep Mouth Shut). This single piece of advice can prevent an enormous amount of trouble. 15. Do something for the Kid in You every day. 16. Carry something inspirational with you to read while waiting in line. 17. Get enough rest. 18. Eat right. 19. Get organized so everything has its place. 20. Listen to a tape while driving that can help improve your quality of life. 21. Write down thoughts and inspirations. 22. Every day, find time to be alone. 23. Having problems? Talk to God on the spot. Try to nip small problems in the bud. Don’t wait until it’s time to go to bed to try and pray...24. Make friends with Godly people. 25. Keep a folder of favorite scriptures on hand. 26. Remember that the shortest bridge between despair and hope is often a good “Thank You God.” 27. Laugh. 28. Laugh some more! 29. Take your work seriously, but not yourself at all! 30. Develop a forgiving attitude (most people are doing the best they can).

Much of our suffering comes from our unwillingness to relinquish control. Everything from large sweeping intersections in our lives to the smallest details that plague us daily when they don’t go our way; we often operate under the faulty belief that we can use force, manipulation, or anger to bend the universe to our will. Albany Avenue Elementary School in the Lindenhurst Union Free School District kicked off Red Ribbon Week with the powerful Soren Bennick antibullying program, “The Power of One.” The interactive program teaches students how to identify bullying, what can be done about it and how every child has the power to end bullying by reporting it when they see it. This power is illustrated through a series of skits using boxes, colors and masks. Skits emphasized the idea that bystanders are as guilty as bullies. They gave vivid examples of the various types of bullying

including physical, verbal, exclusion and cyberbullying. At the end of the program, Albany Avenue students took “The Power

of One” oath and vowed to not bully others or stand by when others are bullied.

Creating Cultural Connections Daniel Street Elementary School fourthgraders in the Lindenhurst Union Free School District explored the culture of the Eastern Woodland Indians with the assistance of the “Journeys into American Indian Territory” program.
