He first saw Sox when she was a puppy, finding her caught in concertina wire in their camp. He freed her, gave her food and water, and sent her on her way. However, Sox had different plans. In the days that followed, Sox started coming back

to their camp each day, feeling safe around the unit and seeking food and water. Some of the other men had even seen the dog being abused out on the streets. Soon, Sox began staying by their side all of the time, even tagging along on some of their missions. On a recent patrol, Sox ventured too far away from the unit and was whipped with a stick by a local. It was at that time that Captain Dave knew he could never leave her behind to fend for herself. “The bond I have with Sox is something I didn’t expect, but I just can’t leave her behind,” says Captain Dave. “If I don’t bring her home with me I am afraid I’ll always regret it and wonder about what happened to her. While many people perform these traditions by rote, it can be interesting to delve into the history behind various components of New Year’s celebrations. Toasting the new year with a sparkling wine can be traced back to French champagne producers. Champagne, a sparkling wine from a specific region of France, was used in the baptism of the Frankish warrior Clovis, according to the Champagne Committee of France. Soon, champagne became a key part of religious events, coronations and soirees - as well as secular rituals that replaced formerly religious rituals, according to the book “When Champagne Became French” by Kolleen Guy. Champagne manufacturers eventually linked the bubbly to festive occasions with family, and New Year’s celebrations became another ideal time to pop the cork on a bottle.

Lindenhurst Bulldogs Honored The 2019 Rutgers Cup Champion Lindenhurst Bulldogs were honored at the Suffolk County Legislature on December 17th by Legislator Kevin McCaffrey. Lindenhurst Mayor Mike Lavorata, District Superintendent Dan Giordano, Principal Dr. Candice Brodie, Athletic Director Anthony Amesti, joined the team and the coaching staff led by Head Coach Nick Lombardo for the presentation. Legislator Kevin McCaffrey honored Coach Nick Lombardo, his coaching staff and players for winning the Long Island Championship

and the coveted Rutgers Trophy for the second time in three years. The Bulldogs, in 2019, went 12-0 for the second time in school history and won the Long Island Championship at Hofstra with a dramatic 14-13 come from behind victory against Garden City. “They now have posted Back to Back to Back Championship seasons making them one of Long Island’s elite high school football programs, said McCaffrey. “It is more than just a high school football victory, but rather a testament to hard work

and commitment, added McCaffrey, “the team’s success has energized a community that really showed their pride and support throughout the playoff run.” LB Jack Winey, DL Will Ruckert, OL Nick Passamano, DL Jeff Perez, HB Jaden Barber, and LB Jack Hogan had outstanding campaigns contributing to the team’s success. Coach Nick Lombardo and the Bulldogs have won 33 of their last 36 games and are enjoying the school’s best performance in their 85 year history. FIRST SESSION OF THE STEM CLUB - This school year,Harding Avenue School completed its first session of the STEM Club with the guidance of Jeannette Walsh and Brian Chamberlin (Principal). The Lindenhurst Union Free School District has pledged to be part of the Computer Science for All K-12 White House initiative LINDENHURST BULLDOGS HONORED - The 2019 Rutgers Cup Champion to equip students with the Lindenhurst Bulldogs were honored at the Suffolk County Legislature on December skills needed to succeed in a technologically driven 17th by Legislator Kevin McCaffrey. world. As such, in recognition of Computer Science Education Week, students throughout the district took part in the international Hour of Code movement. The Hour of

Code encourages students to spend one hour during the week learning code. The event’s intention is to expose and clarify coding and demonstrate that anyone can learn the basics. At Lindenhurst Middle School, opportunities to participate were offered with support from school library media specialist Jennifer Freedman. During the week, students explored coding using Google’s CS

First Code to design their own superhero, determine the character’s abilities and create the environment surrounding the character. The American Library Association has provided the middle school library with a $300 grant as part of an effort to get students more involved in the Hour of Code. According to Freedman, the grant will be used to bring even more technology into the library’s maker-space.

John Theissen C h i l d r e n ’ s Foundation is a local non-profit that collects and distributes toys, provides hospitals and child-care facilities with therapeutic and recreational e q u i p m e n t , supports families with financial assistance to defray medical expenses, fulfills patient’s wishlists throughout the year (for those 18 years of age and younger) and assists sick and underpriviledged children in other ways that are needed. Of course this charity experiences their busy season in the midst of the holidays, receiving and distributing lots of gifts for those in need, however, they make a large impact
