ANNUAL TREE-LIGHTING CEREMONY - The sounds of the Christmas season echoed through the Lindenhurst Rainbow Senior Citizen Center as the annual tree-lighting ceremony officially illuminated the center’s Christmas tree. Trustee Joan M. Masterson was honored to officially light the tree in front of over 100 people attending the event; a lunch was provided by the Lindenhurst Rotary Club. Mayor Michael A. Lavorata said, “What a great way to start the holiday season right at the Rainbow Center.” Pictured here are Trustee Joan M. In 1992, John Theissen held a toy drive during the holiday season to benefit children in local hospitals. During this first drive, he collected over 800 new toys in just 2 weeks! That was

the beginning of what has become the year round organization, John Theissen Children’s Foundation. Since 1992, this organization has collected over 1 million new toys and have donated them to sick and underpriviledged children in over 180 hospitals and child-care facilities. However, this Foundation does more than just collect and distribute toys. They also provide hospitals and child-care facilities with therapeutic and recreational equipment, support families with financial assistance to defray medical expenses, fulfill patient’s wishlists throughout the year (for those 18 years of age

Holiday Season Helping Sick & Underprivileged Children! and younger) and they assist sick and underpriviledged children in other ways that are needed. You can get involved with this Foundation in various different ways. Suffolk Legislator Tom Donnelly (D-Huntington Station) is pleased to inform Babylon and Huntington residents about the local Suffolk County Office for the Aging Fall 2019 Senior Advocate Schedule. Senior advocates are County representatives who come out into the community and assist seniors with information gathering, completion of eligibility or recertification applications and referrals to appropriate community agencies. “This is an excellent chance for senior citizens to get the assistance and information they need by connecting with the County’s senior advocates right in their own communities,” said Legislator Donnelly. “I hope all those interested in the services that the Suffolk County Office for the Aging provides will

take advantage of this opportunity.” This Fall, Senior Advocates will be visiting the following locations in the Town of Babylon: • Tanner Park Nutrition Center,#2 Tanner Park, Copiague: Wednesday, December 11, 8:30 am – 1 pm • Wyandanch Nutrition Center, 28 Wyandanch Avenue, Wyandanch: Wednesday, December 18, 9:30 am – 1 pm: Friday, December 13, 8:30 am – 12 pm • In Huntington, they will be visiting the following: • Huntington Senior Nutrition Center, 423 Park Avenue, Huntington: Wednesday, December 18, 8:30 am – 12 pm Advocates assist with the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program

GRAND OPENING OF BAKUTO - Mayor Michael A. Lavorata recently attended the grand opening of Bakuto, a new Japanese restaurant, with Deputy Mayor Maryann Weckerle, Trustee Patrick Pichichero and Village Administrator Douglas Madlon. Owners, Rachel Voges, Patrick Capellini, and Vincent D’Eletto stated, “We are so happy to have the support of the community and feel so welcomed in Lindenhurst.”. Mayor Lavorata said, “These people have worked very hard to make their dream of opening their own restaurant a reality.”. Deputy Mayor Maryann Weckerle said, “We wish them the best of luck in their new business.”. Bakuto, 121 North Wellwood Avenue is a Japanese Izakaya restaurant. The menu includes noodles such, as ramen and udon, an assortment of daily crudo, Japanese steam buns, and robatayaki selection of grilled meats, fish, and vegetables.

Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School has announced the top 10 students for the graduating Class of 2020. With a weighted GPA of 103.35, Melanie Garcia has been named the valedictorian. Marvin Lobo has been named salutatorian with a weighted GPA of 103.30. Valedictorian Melanie Garcia is an Advanced Placement Scholar with Distinction and has been a valuable member of the National Honor Society, Tri-M Music Honor Society, Math Team, Global Ambassadors Club and SOUL Medical Outreach Club. She participated in varsity tennis and bowling all four years of high school and is a recipient of the Golden Eagle Award due to her strong high school GPA. She is also a leader of the Voice to Voice Women’s Empowerment Committee, treasurer of the Class of 2020, treasurer

of the Spanish Club and secretary of the Knitting and Crochet Club. She has applied to Cornell University, Columbia University, Stony Brook University, Binghamton University and Adelphi University. She is eager to study biology and pursue a career in medicine. During the past four years, Marvin has continuously placed on the honor roll, has been named an AP Scholar with Distinction, and has most recently been selected for the Suffolk Zone Chapter Award. As a leader throughout the school, Lobo is active in the National Honor Society, where he has served as vice president and president consecutively. In addition, he is an active member of the Global Ambassadors, the One-Mind Cub, and the Key Club, where he has worked with teachers and students toward bettering

the school community. He has been an integral part of the varsity wrestling team for the last four years and served as the team’s captain. Although undecided on his college and major, he has applied to Duke University, Princeton University, Harvard University, Cornell University and Stanford University. The district congratulates the Walter G. Parading Around Susan E. Wiley Thanksgiving Day isn’t complete without the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade held each year in New York City. The fourth grade students in Jennifer Rosario’s class at Susan E. Wiley Elementary School in the Copiague School

District were challenged to replicate the parade floats and its route through the city. Working in small groups, students let their creativity shine as they designed balloons to replicate those that one would see along

the parade route. The next step was designing the parade route around Manhattan and using technology to move them. Coding their Ozobots, the floats lined up in formation and paraded around Santa Claus in the middle.

He leaves behind his children Stephen, Linda and Michael. His stepchildren Sal, Kathy and Donna. Grandfather to Tara, David, Stephen Jr., Luke, Nicholas, Christopher, Michael and Amelia. The holidays are a time for celebrating with family and friends, but often stress inhibits our abilities to enjoy the holiday season. From shopping to cooking to events, we are often packing our schedules while forgetting about our health.

A report in the Journal of the American Heart Association noted that heart-related deaths spike during Christmas. While more research is needed to pinpoint the exact reason, researchers suggest that emotional stress, changes in diet and
