Did You Know? Longevity in marriage is something to be celebrated. Couples who reach fiftieth and sixtieth wedding anniversaries often commemorate those anniversaries with big parties. But there are some around the world who would consider golden anniversary celebrants to still be newlyweds. In December 2015, Karam Chand, 110, and his wife, Kartari Chand, 103, from Bradford, West Yorkshire (originally from India), celebrated their 90th wedding anniversary, becoming the world’s longest-betrothed couple. In America, John and Ann Betar, ages 104 and 100, respectively, have been married 83 years as of 2016. The couple eloped in 1932. They have been named one of America’s longest-married couples by the Worldwide Marriage Encounter.

The Charity of the Month for December is: John Theissen Children’s Foundation www.jtcf.org

John Theissen Children’s Foundation began after their Executive Director & Founder, John Theissen, had stayed at Schneider’s Children’s Hospital in New Hyde Park when he was 17 years old. John needed to have brain surgery for a brain tumor that he unfortunately developed. The day he walked into the hospital he met a 7 year old girl named Tasha. She spent many hours with John for the next few days, always trying to make him happy. Tasha received very little family support, however she expected her family to attend a holiday party that was sponsored by the hospital staff. Unfortunately they did not attend. John was too ill to take her, so his family did. When Santa asked her what she had wanted she replied, “I would like a teddy bear for my friend upstairs.” John felt fortunate to be that friend. Tasha’s positive attitude and generous spirit inspired John. Once he got out of the hospital he wanted to help children just like her. In 1992, John held a toy drive during the holiday season to benefit children in local hospitals. During this first drive, he collected over 800 new toys in just 2 weeks! That was

Holiday Season Helping Sick & Underprivileged Children! the beginning of what has become the year round organization, John Theissen Children’s Foundation. Since 1992, this organization has collected over 1 million new toys and have donated them to sick and underpriviledged children in over 180 hospitals and child-care facilities. However, this Foundation does more than just collect and distribute toys. They also provide hospitals and childcare facilities with therapeutic and recreational equipment, support families with financial assistance to defray medical expenses, fulfill patient’s wishlists throughout the year (for those 18 years of age and younger) and they assist sick and underpriviledged children in other ways that are needed. On December 5th at 6:30PM, John Theissen Children’s Foundation will be hosting A Night of Champions Holiday Gala! This Gala will feature one of New York’s biggest and best live auctions, great raffles, door prizes, gourmet dishes provided by 2nd Street Gourmet, desserts provided by Francesco’s Bakery and a VIP Lounge Meet & Greet with celebrity professional athletes. Admission is $50 and VIP admission is $350. To purchase a ticket, please visit

The Lindenhurst Union Free School District department of fine and performing arts recently held the inaugural Orchestra Pops Concert featuring eighth grade and high school orchestra students under the direction of Kristin Lombardo. Throughout the evening, the audience enjoyed

performances of popular songs such as “Eleanor Rigby” and “Don’t Stop Believing” arranged by Larry Moore, “Feel It Still” arranged by Michael Story and “A Million Dreams” arranged by James Kazik featuring a violin solo from Madison Garraffo. “This performance was the joint effort of the middle and high school orchestra

teachers and strengthened the relationship and collaboration between eighth grade students and their high school counterparts,” said Mr. Jon Trapani, coordinator of fine and performing arts. “We are proud of their efforts and the performance they created together.”

Lindenhurst Welcomes Jill Schilling Lindenhurst Union Free School District welcomes Ms. Jill Schilling to her new role as district coordinator of world languages and English as a new language. Ms. Schilling joins the district with more than 12 years of English as a new language teaching experience, having worked at Eastern Suffolk BOCES in Patchogue, in the North Babylon Union Free School District and in the Sayville Public Schools. Throughout the course of her career, Ms. Schilling has coordinated instructional curriculum development for dual language and ENL, cochaired a dual language program committee and served as the parent liaison for the ENL department. She has also developed, presented and led several workshops at conferences and district staff development on

JILL SCHILLING topics such as “Beyond Google – Tools for English Language Learners,” Part 154 Regulations and Procedures, and cultural proficiency. Prior professional leadership experience includes eight years at CMP Media where she served as an account director working with Fortune 500 companies. “I believe that my diverse

background has helped me to become a dynamic and compassionate leader,” Schilling said. “Having varied experience at the business and instructional level has given me the skills necessary for dealing with complex issues, supervising staff and ensuring compliance and mandates.” Ms. Schilling holds her advanced graduate certificate in educational leadership from Stony Brook University. Additionally, she obtained a Master of Science in education/teaching English to speakers of other languages from St. John’s University and a Bachelor of Arts in speech communications from SUNY Oneonta. The district is honored to welcome Ms. Schilling and is confident that she will be successful in her endeavors.

Students Share Prize Posters The Lindenhurst Union Free School District congratulates the 2019 winners of the annual fire safety poster contest, sponsored by the Lindenhurst Fire Department. Coordinated by firefighter Sarah

Callahan, the annual contest invited all elementary students to participate. Students were asked to either color or draw a picture based on the theme of fire safety. Submissions were then judged and five

winners (one per grade) from each school were chosen. To recognize these winners, the fire department traveled to each school with a fire truck and presented the winning artists with certificates of achievement.

BRAIN CHALLENGE - Harding Avenue students participated in Hollyrock Entertainment’s Brain Challenge assembly. The students were asked various trivia questions to test their knowledge on anti-bullying in a fun and educational game show way. Harding student displayed great knowledge about anti-bullying and how to be inclusive of all children. This assembly was definitely a big success!

January 17, 1943 - November 26, 2019 Salvatore Messina, of West Islip, passed away November 26, 2019. He was 76. Sal was born in New York City on January 17, 1943, to Vincent & Frances (nee D’Angelo) Messina. Sal owned & operated The Fruit Tree in Copiague from 1970 until he sold it in 2011. Throughout this time Sal also had stores in Massapequa, Lindenhurst and Florida. Everyone in the community knew Sal and enjoyed seeing and talking to him as he walked through the store greeting customers by their names. He was always there to help people in the community when they needed anything. Sal grew up in the produce business with his family in Manhattan. He learned at a young age that outstanding customer service along with quality products is the key to success. His family was a tremendous inﬂuence on him throughout his career. On May 18, 1996, he married his beloved wife Angela (nee Antonacci). In addition to his wife, Angela, he is survived by his cherished twin daughters, Francesca Messina & Arianna Messina. Sal is the dear brother of Francine Messina Rizzo, as well as the late, Peter Messina, Catherine Messina, Josephine Messina Troyano. He is also survived by his loving granddaughter, Mia, his daughter in law, Jennifer and nephews and nieces, Vincent, Debbie, Susan Messina, John, Marc, Dawn, Vincent and Joanna Troyano, Michelle Street, Salvatore, Robert & Jamie Rizzo. I was lucky enough to know Sal for over 35 years. I was always amazed at his ability to keep everything under control no matter what was going on. I looked foward to working with him each week. He was much more than a customer. He was a friend, and I will miss him.
