In the Village’s on-going effort to improve and upgrade the Lindenhurst Rainbow Senior Citizen Center, major renovations are happening to the newly designated Senior Rainbow Room. Utilizing Federal Community Development
Block Grant funds, in conjunction with the Town of Babylon, the Village is reconstructing an old, dilapidated, neglected area of the Center for improved safety, comfort, handicap accessibility, and service to our Senior residents.
This project is a marvelous example of the Village & Town working together for the people of Lindenhurst. We extend our thanks to Town of Babylon Supervisor Rich Schaffer for his ongoing support.
Mouthwatering turkeys are the centerpieces of many holiday dinner tables. Golden roasted turkey pairs well with many side dishes, and flavors can be customized depending on the guest list. 2021 Commuter Parking Permit Information
Resident Permits must bring their vehicle registration(s) and proof of residence (a recent tax or utility bill). The fee for 2021 Resident Commuter Parking Permits will be $65.00. New this year, Resident Permits will be available for purchase on-line at the Village website www. villageoflindenhurstny.gov. Applicants can make their payment on-line, submit their vehicle registration and proof of residence via email, and permits will be mailed to them. Permits may also still be obtained by mail. Applicants Saturday, January 9, 2021 should mail their vehicle from 10:00 a.m. to noon registration receipt, proof of residence, and the fee of Persons wishing to obtain $65.00 to the Village Hall.

Lindenhurst Village Mayor Michael Lavorata announces that 2021 Resident Commuter Parking Permits will be available for purchase beginning Monday, November 30th. For in-person purchases, Village Hall, 430 South Wellwood Avenue., is open weekdays (except holidays) from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Weekend hours have also been scheduled for the convenience of commuters as follows: Saturday, December 19, 2020 from 10:00 a.m. to noon
The permit and other papers will be promptly returned. 2021 Non-Resident Commuter Parking Permits will be allocated by a lotterytype random drawing. Contact Village Hall or visit the Village website for more information. Parking Permits are required for the Resident and Non-Resident municipal parking fields north of the Lindenhurst LIRR station, and for all parking bays under the LIRR viaduct from Wellwood Avenue to Delaware Avenue. HOMETOWN HEROES BANNER PROGRAM ANNOUNCED - Town of Babylon Supervisor Rich Schaffer, Deputy Supervisor Tony Martinez, Councilman and Veteran Advisory Board Chairman DuWayne Gregory and the rest of the Town Board announced a partnership with the Kiwanis Club of Lindenhurst to hang banners across the town featuring the names and photos of service men and women from the Town of Babylon. The program, currently administered by the Lindenhurst Kiwanis in the Village of Lindenhurst, is an effort to honor veterans while beatifying downtown areas.
Wreaths Across America The Lindenhurst High School National Art Honor Society is raising funds for Wreaths Across America. A wreath can be sponsored for $15 and will be designated to a fallen soldier. All orders can be made through www. WreathsAcrossAmerica.org/ NY0088P. The following ID numbers are required on each order so that the wreaths will be delivered to
the Long Island National Cemetery on Wellwood Avenue. The Location ID number is NYLINC and the Group ID number is NY008P. Orders will be taken until Dec. 1. On Dec. 19, National Wreaths Across America Day, the members of the class will place the sponsored wreaths on the graves of the fallen soldiers, as will numerous volunteers throughout the
country. This is the sixth year that Lindenhurst High School students have supported the cause. Last year, more than 200 wreaths were sponsored. This year, they are hoping to surpass that impressive number. All are encouraged to sponsor at least one wreath so as to demonstrate gratitude to the fallen heroes.
Preservation Long Island Announces Call for 2021 Endangered Historic Places Nominations
Preservation Long Island, a regional preservation advocacy nonprofit, is pleased to announce a call for nominations for the 2021 Endangered Historic Places Program (EHPP). Nominations are open to the public and can be submitted digitally through the EHPP 2021 portal on Preservation Long Island’s website. All nominations must be received by Friday, December 18, 2020. Do you know of an endangered historic place in your Long Island community? Preservation Long Island’s Endangered Historic Places Program (EHPP) offers Long Islanders an opportunity to advocate for preservation priorities in their communities while learning how to use tools like landmark designation, tax incentives, and public outreach. Our EHPP listing partners receive technical assistance and advocacy support as they work to preserve at-risk historic places threatened by a variety of adverse conditions, from outright demolition to the lack of sustainable long-term stewardship plans. EHPP listings are featured on Preservation Long Island’s website and social media. Listed sites may serve as locations for our Preservation in Progress Tour series, which highlights ongoing preservation projects at historic places throughout the region. We also support our listing partners in developing informational materials such as leaflets or brochures outlining the history of a site and its preservation needs. Listings are selected by a panel of Preservation Long Island staff, experts in architecture, historic preservation, and other related fields, as well as members of Preservation Long Island’s Board of Trustees.

Photo by Dylan Wallace ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA Significance: A nominated site must be historically, culturally, or architecturally significant and may encompass individual buildings, landscapes, structures, or any grouping thereof. However, the nominated site need not be listed on the National/State Registers of Historic Places or designated as a local landmark. Threat: The existence and/ or integrity of the nominated site must be seriously threatened. In addition to planned demolition, threats can include a pattern of neglect or exposure that will inevitably lead to loss; the planned introduction of harmful factors or insensitive redevelopment that will substantially diminish the context or setting; or inappropriate maintenance/alterations resulting in the loss of material integrity. Impact: EHPP listing will have a positive impact on efforts to protect the nominated site. The nomination demonstrates substantive community interest in preservation of the site. Local listing partners are sufficiently organized and prepared to advocate for preservation goals.

Army Soldier Desperate For Help To Rescue Cat From The Middle East Being deployed to the Middle East can be challenging for any U.S. soldier. But when you get difficult family news from back home, it can make getting through that period even more difficult. When Army Sergeant Ash received difficult family news, she took comfort in a rescued kitten that was near death. Now people wonder if she saved the kitten, or if the kitten actually saved her. Coming back home to the States, she is desperate to bring the cat, Rona, along with her. To help make it happen, she has turned to Guardians of Rescue, which has a reputation of helping soldiers. “We know all too well how important and lifesaving these pets are to our soldiers stationed in the Middle East,” explains Robert Misseri, president of Guardians of Rescue, an animal rescue organization. “When they come back home, they can’t bear to leave them there, and we agree that it’s not safe. Leaving the cat in the Middle East will end up being a death sentence for it. We will make every effort to bring Rona home to her, but we need the public’s support to help make it happen.” Sgt. Ash’s roommate worked for a veterinarian on base, where they had been given a rescued kitten that was only a week old. They didn’t know if it would make it, as it was near death, and they knew she needed around-the-clock care. That’s when she decided to hook up Sgt. Ash with the kitten, thinking that taking care of her would help distract her thoughts from all the family issues that were weighing on her. Sgt. Ash took the kitten and gave it all the care that it needed. Twice she thought she almost lost her, but the kitten held on and pushed through. Once she overcame being sick, she decided to name her Rona, which was after the coronavirus, because she felt that the virus is tough to fight, and
Lindenhurst Students Lay Down The Law In recognition of Election Day on Nov. 3, students throughout the Lindenhurst Union Free School district took part in various lessons to learn about the process of electing and the responsibilities of a president. At Alleghany Avenue Elementary School, first grade students in Lauren DiBernardo and Sandra
Rona had put up a great fight. She went on to spend all of her time with Rona, creating a loving bond and seeing her as a sign of hope and strength. “We saved each other and we belong together,” shares Sgt. Ash. “I pray that Guardians of Rescue will be able to bring Rona home to the States, where we can live out our lives together. I’m grateful for their help, as well as to everyone who donates to help make it possible.” Guardians of Rescue is no stranger to helping soldiers bring their pets back from deployment. They have helped many people bring back their dogs and cats, all through the help of the public. Bringing pets back is not an easy task, and it’s one that is also costly. Not only will Rona have to go through a medical check, but the organization will need to work with other organizations in the Middle East to help make it happen, and it will need to pay for the travel expenses. Lercari’s class conducted a vote to determine which invisible “Secret Student Fairy” would reside in the classroom and identify students daily who work hard. Students were introduced to the candidates “Flash Fairy” and “Firefly Fairy” and then given the opportunity to cast their ballot. In the end, the majority of
students voted to name the fairy Flash. In addition to exploring the process of electing a president, first grade students of Albany Avenue Elementary School discussed the role and responsibilities of a president. They were then asked to write about a new law that they would like to approve if they were president.

The Andrew McMorris Memorial Walkathon will be held on Friday, November 27th after being cancelled due to the initial outbreak of the Corona Virus. The scenic trail walk will be through the beautiful and picturesque Baiting Hollow Scout Camp located at 1774 Sound Avenue, Calverton, NY and will include a tour of the beautiful McMorris Lodge being built at the Camp. All walkers will enjoy a complementary grab and go lunch at the conclusion of the Walkathon which is being donated by Applebee’s. While Black Friday and Cyber Monday are some of the more widely known retail holidays, Giving Tuesday is becoming pretty popular in its own right. Celebrated on the Tuesday following Thanksgiving, Giving Tuesday helps raise awareness that charity is an important component of the holiday season. The nonprofit services company Neon says nearly one-third of all annual giving occurs in December, with 12 percent happening over the final three days of the year. Giving Tuesday is positioned right in the midst of the most popular time for charitable giving. What makes Giving Tuesday unique is that it is largely fueled by the power of social media and collaboration. The day was actually created
by the 92nd Street Y, a cultural center in New York City that has been instrumental in bringing diverse groups of people together with the goals of giving back through service. The 92nd Street Y and the United Nations Foundation came together in 2012 to help form a day that was focused on the generosity of giving during the holiday season. Thus, Giving Tuesday was born. Technology and social media play a large role in uniting people for Giving Tuesday. Founding partners included Mashable, a technology website, Skype and Cisco, but the success of Giving Tuesday is thanks in large part to the general public, who have both spread the word and made their own contributions to charity. In 2017, Giving
Tuesday soared to new heights when technology mogul Bill Gates and his wife, Melinda, announced their foundation would match up to $2 million in donations to Giving Tuesday fundraisers started on Facebook. Facebook similarly waived its 5 percent fee for U.S.-based nonprofits all day long. The global Giving Tuesday movement helped raise more than $300 million online across more than 150 countries in 2017 alone. This year, the Giving Tuesday organization is poised to top their numbers and continue to improve upon the more than 46,000 participating organizations involved in their charitable efforts. ARNOLD “TONY” PRISCO 1934 - 2020
With the passing of Arnold “Tony” Prisco Sr. on October 28, 2020, Copiague has suffered the loss of an illustrious resident. A businessman, entrepreneur, and strong advocate for the Copiague community, his sudden passing has impacted so many family and friends.

Born on December 22, 1934, to Anthony and Nicolena Prisco, he lived his entire life in Copiague in a very traditional Italian household. His father built the first bowling alley and Italian restaurant on Long Island. Tony’s Pizza, became Arnie’s first job, as the boy placing the pins on the alleys. Always working, his father expected his wife, Nicolena, to prepare a nightly home-cooked for him. Thus, Arnie would walk the mile from his home to the bowling alley every night to bring his father dinner. When reminiscing, Arnie would trace his work ethic directly to his own upbringing.

A high point in his life was when he was Chapter Director for Harley-Davidson for several years in the 80’s. Riding his motorcycle with fellow bikers was both a release and source of service. One of the events that he spearheaded was the Christmas Toy Run when bikers rode across Long Island raising money and toys
His connection to Blizzard Fence was evident in his daily 4:30 PM call to the office. Office manager, Donna Farina, looked forward to sharing the news of the day and “could count on his call like clockwork.” He had a true insight and a sense of people which is why his daughterin-law, Lori, clearly valued his expertise. “I could call Dad anytime and he would often advise and help me navigate the intricacies of the business and my own life. He became my second father.” He was an advocate for healthy living and went to the gym until he was in his early 80’s. He had a wide range of friends that included founding members of the community, politicians, and most importantly, encouraged new businesses and new voices. Jen Madden, shared that her husband, Chris Madden, and she would often stop into Blizzard Fence to visit with Arnie because he would inspire them to pursue actions that would benefit Copiague. He loved nothing more than to sit down, have a cup of coffee and share narratives about the past and Copiague’s history.
Arnie was the original “Greaser” and in the summer of 1950 when his future wife, Lorraine, saw him in his white convertible on the East Venice Bridge, she knew he was the one for her. They were married in 1956 when he was 22 and she was 19 and began their life together in a bungalow on East Minerva in Lindenhurst. A son, Anthony, and daughter Debbie, soon completed the family. Arnie’s career was not a straight path. He worked for Typhoon Fence learning the art of being a salesman. Arnie was the owner of the Cleaners on Oak Street. There he learned the essential skills required to manage a business. After purchasing the iconic Prisco Building from his father, he harnessed all these valuable insights, and launched Blizzard Fence in 1960. Thus, would begin a forty-year career that he developed and cherished. Arnie was the quintessential business owner, debonair and suave; he toiled around town in his Cadillac with his famous Fence 1 license plate! He nurtured his commitment to Copiague by becoming a member and donating to causes through community service organizations such as The Kiwanis Club of Copiague, and the Copiague Chamber of Commerce. He was truly passionate about investing in the progress of Copiague’s business community. This is best illustrated when he was once on vacation in Puerto Rico with close friends. He heard that Great Neck Road had
Always interested in the daily lives of his children and grandchildren he continually reached out to them wanting to know how their days were and what they were doing. His daughter, Debbie, so articulately encapsulated her father calling him, “A great American. The American flag he would say, was ‘My flag.’ He was a true man of character.” Arnold “Tony” Prisco was a pillar of the community. He will truly be missed; the august family patriarch, his chair in the Blizzard Office will always remain his.
His interest in serving the community led him to be considered for Babylon Town Council Seat. Although, not successful in pursuing this career path, he became a force in community politics and was instrumental in promoting Madeleine Fitzgibbon to prominence and having her name considered for judgeship which she attained in 1994. Judge Fitzgibbon fondly reminisced, “That experience working with Tony is when we went from a working friendship to a family relationship.” She recalled that Arnie’s mindset was such

Following in the footsteps of his father’s legacy, Tony, Jr. reveled in Arnie’s words, “Anthony, I’m so proud of you. You’re doing a good job.” Arnie’s ties to Blizzard Fence were long-lasting and Arnie was humbled as he accepted the Rich Schaffer’s Outstanding Business
He is survived by his wife, Lorraine, his son, Anthony, daughter-in-law, Lori, daughter, Debbie, son-in-law, Charlie, eight grandchildren, eleven greatgrandchildren, and two great-great grandchildren. He will be waked at Johnston’s Funeral Home in Lindenhurst. A funeral Mass will be at Our Lady of The Assumption in Copiague. He will lie in rest at St. Charles Cemetery. Christmas Tree Project Faces Explosive Need In 10th Year The Christmas Tree Project began eight years ago in Colorado Springs, and its initial success has attracted national interest from people in other cities wanting to donate, get trees as well as wishing to emulate its success. The project is a local grassroots effort to provide free, fullydecorated Christmas trees to families in need. Last year, requests for trees almost sextupled to 17,500 from 2,780 the previous year, arriving nationally from 47 U.S. states and as far away as from Karachi, Pakistan. “A beautiful, sparkling Christmas tree can make all the difference in the world to a family going through hard times right now,” according to Michelle and David Fein, who started the project in 2010. “This turned out to be such a happy accident
for us, that it’s a thrill to be doing it again.” “In this season of giving,” CBS news correspondent Alex Wagner explained last year, “One Colorado couple never expected that donating their old Christmas tree would lead to a heartwarming annual tradition.” Watch. The entire project sprang quite serendipitously from a simple one-line Craigslist ad the Feins posted to give away their artificial Christmas tree in 2010. They were contacted by 20 people in less than a few hours telling them their stories and vying for that one tree, that Michelle and David decided they had to try to meet the demand. They told their friends, and soon the word spread. The story touched a nerve in the Colorado
Springs community, and hundreds of people contacted The Christmas Tree Project to donate and request trees, as well as volunteer to help. By the time the first season it was all over, more than 300 trees had been given away. In a world troubled economically and divided politically, it may even seem a bit surprising. “It’s been overwhelming to see the vast reservoirs of energy and generosity that exist today when you simply offer people a chance to become involved and contribute, even in a small way,” added the Feins. “And it’s incredibly humbling to see the gratitude small acts of kindness produce.” The 2010 ad David and Michelle Fein placed on Craigslist for a single tree, brought responses including:
“I have 6 kids and no tree…we would like it if it’s still available.” “If this tree is still available, I sure could use it. My kids are 6 and 9. We won’t have a lot under it this year but there will be something there.” “My husband broke his leg 5 weeks ago and we are really struggling. We need a tree desperately.” “It will be my daughter’s first Christmas and we just don’t have the $$ for a tree.” “I have a boys group home that really can use it..........Let me know.” This year, the requests are just as numerous, and heartfelt. This story is not really even about Christmas trees. It’s about an amazing effort that started with a chain of small acts of kindness better Christmas. New York Blood Center And Area Hospitals Launch Initiative To Increase Blood Donations to increase blood donations. Temporary blood shortages are not uncommon during summer and winter holidays each year, but the COVID-19 pandemic has created a chronic shortage across the country that shows no sign of improving. This reality is particularly dangerous given the looming uncertainty surrounding the pandemic’s trajectory over the course of
this winter. New York’s healthcare system requires 1,500 donations each day to treat patients ranging from trauma victims to newborn babies and their mothers to cancer patients. Prior to the pandemic, donors could stop by community blood drives at convenient locations, but nearly all high schools, colleges, offices and other
community groups have had to cancel their blood drives due to COVID-19. Blood donors can now make appointments to visit donor centers, but donations are at just 65% of pre-pandemic levels - well below what is needed by hospitals and patients in our area. “The entire foundation of the way people donate blood has changed. The
convenience factor of walking down the hallway while at work, getting out of class or donating after religious services is gone. Instead, we have to rely on people taking the extra step of proactively seeking out a place to donate. So far, that isn’t happening at the level we need,” said Andrea H. Cefarelli, Senior Executive Director of Recruitment
