So who faces hunger on Long Island? More often than not, it is people who are just like you. Fewer than 5% of the individuals served by Long Island Cares and other organizations fighting poverty and hunger in our community are actually homeless. According to the national study, Hunger in America, here are some staggering statistics that will allow you to better understand the need for organizations like Long Island Cares on our island. There are approximately 283,700 people on Long Island that receive emergency food every single year. That equates to 64,900 people every week. 39% of Long Islanders who receive emergency food are children under the age of 18. While children are among the largest single population of hungry, they have virtually no voice; their needs are easily dismissed and overlooked and they must rely on others to access the feeding programs and services they need. Additionally, children who are hungry are more likely than their peers to experience behavioral issues, reduced ability to learn social skills and impaired cognitive learning, even permanent brain damage. Lastly, I think it is important to mention that Food Banks are by far the single most important source of food for agencies with emergency food providers, accounting for 69% of the food distributed by pantries, 39% distributed by kitchens and 45% by shelters.

In honor of Veterans Day, which recently passed, below is a heartfelt story of how Long Island Cares helped a female veteran. Michelle is a 28 year old veteran of service in the Middle East. As she ended her service, she found integration back into civilian life difficult. Through Long Island Cares, Michelle has been able to access food and support services and comes to their Military Appreciation Tuesdays regularly. Visiting their pantry weekly, she receives food for herself and for her puppy, which eases her financial concerns as she navigates applying for SNAP and other benefits. So how can you get involved with this organization to help those in need? There are many ways! You can volunteer with the organization, even if it is just for a few hours, to help make a difference in the lives of others. Volunteers can participate in the following areas: Warehouse Sorting & Repacking (lifting is required), Clerical Tasks, Mobile Pantry, Food Pantries, Special Events, Food Drives or their Student Volunteer Corps. Please email licvolunteer@licares.org for more information. Additionally, food donations are always welcome. Food donations to Long Island Cares is one of the simplest ways you can make a difference in the lives of your neighbors. You can drop off your food donation at one of their ongoing or upcoming food drives or a Long Island Cares food pantry on weekdays from 8:30AM-4:00PM. Students in Michelle Rollman’s third grade class at William Rall Elementary School in the Lindenhurst Union Free School District recently welcomed U.S. Army veterans Alice Diacosavvas,

Michael O’Donnell and Gene Plastino to their classroom. The students honored the veterans with a special rendition of “The StarSpangled Banner” and prepared a homemade chili

for the soldier’s lunch. The veterans answered the students’ questions and asked a few of their own. “It is so thoughtful and a real honor for them to do this for us,” said veteran Alice Diacosavvas.

A Historical Veterans Day On Monday, November 11th, Veterans Day, the Lindenhurst Historical Society rededicated the WWI Monument, located on Monument Plaza at the crossroads of Wellwood and Hoffman Avenues. The event featured a parade and reenactment of the

1919 dedication ceremony, along with a service to honor and remember all of our Veterans, led by the United Veterans Council. Mayor Michael Lavorata thanked Village Historian, Anna Jaeger, for her research and work in planning the historical

event, saying “It was a wonderful community event to mark the 100th Anniversary of the WWI Monument, and to honor all the men and women who have served our country so bravely and selflessly.”

PUBLIC EXPLANATION OF A PROPOSED ACTIVITY IN A 100-YEAR FLOODPLAIN AND WETLAND This work will be located in 100-year floodplain (SHFA Zone AE). Since the action will include new construction in a floodplain, Executive Order 11988 requires that the project not be supported if there are practicable alternatives to development in floodplain and new construction in wetlands. The disturbance of this area would occur during project construction and would cease once construction is completed. The Proposed Activity will result in permanent impacts to approximately 1.1 acres of 100-Year Floodplain. The project activities that could affect the floodplain include removal of existing concrete and asphalt debris along the shoreline, construction of the high- and low-tide rock sills, the sitting wall, and new drainage outlets, and the potential removal of the asphalt road surface at the east end of the site. Anticipated benefits of the improvements include improved water quality, habitat creation, erosion control, aesthetic improvements, and improved passive recreation accessibility. The project location is in wetlands that are designated as within estuarine/ marine deep-water (USFWS) and within the 300-foot buffer zone of tidal wetlands (NYSDEC). The removal of the top of the existing bulkheads along the shore of the eastern portion of the site will occur in the area designated as NWI Intertidal Marsh (IM). While some of the work will take place in the wetland area, the disturbance will be temporary, and the long-term effects will include returning the overall area to a more natural state. The Proposed Activity will mechanically remove existing invasive plants, Phragmites, and plant Spartina alterniflora in the intertidal marsh seaward of mean high water and plant Spartina patens in the high marsh environment landward of mean high water in accordance with a NYSDEC approved planting plan. This will improve the natural habitat within the floodplain and wetlands providing improved functionality of these valuable assets.

Ryan was a middle school student from Vermont who died by suicide in 2003 due to depression and constant bullying. In an emotional presentation that included a slideshow of Ryan throughout the years, Ryan’s father, John

Halligan, recounted to the sixth grade students of Lindenhurst, the story of his son’s life and the ridicule he endured. In separate sessions for students and parents, he discussed the devastating impact his son’s suicide has had on his family, and the power of forgiveness. “Ryan was so focused on the people who didn’t like him that he forgot all about those people in his life who loved him,” said Mr. Halligan. “I assure every one of you in this

room, you are loved beyond belief.” Mr. Halligan urged students to seek help from a trusted grown-up if they, or someone they know are having similar bad feelings and to speak up if they know someone who is bullying a classmate. “Bullies tend to pick on people for the audience reaction. If you don’t give them the attention, or let them know you don’t think it is cool, they won’t have the same desire to do it.”
