Large school buses are not equipped with seat belts, but that doesn’t compromise their ability to transport students safely to and from school. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says that school buses are designed differently than passenger cars and light trucks. As a result of their unique design, as well as their size and weight, school buses distribute crash forces differently from other vehicles, utilizing a different kind of safety restraint system that is effective at keeping passengers safe. This system is known as “compartmentalization.” The NHTSA says the interiors of large buses protect children without seat belts because of closely spaced seats that have energy-absorbing seat backs. This compartmentalization will keep children from being forced out of their seats during an impact. However, in the United States, small school buses, or those with a gross vehicle weight rating of 10,000 pounds or less, must be equipped with lap or lap/shoulder belts in all seating positions.

Pa l - O - M i n e Equestrian is a comprehensive therapeutic equine program that uses horses to facilitate growth, learning and healing for individuals with disabilities and for other vulnerable populations that was founded by Lisa Gatti. Located at 829 Old Nichols Road in Islandia, Pal-O-Mine grew from having two programs, eight horses and 80 students per week to 11 programs, 25 horses and 400 students per week. This organization sits on eight acres, with a 20-stall barn, handicapped accessible bathrooms, a new 100’ x 120’ indoor arena with stateof-the-art footing and a rider hoisting system, and three outdoor riding arenas. Individuals of all ages are welcome to take part in the programs they offer. They operate with five full-time employees, 35 independent contractors and 80 volunteers a week. Their riding instructors have experience with the following diagnoses: Autism Spectrum Disorders, Anxiety Disorders, Sensory Processing Disorder, Attention Deficit Disorder, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Neurological Disorders, Cerebral Palsy, Traumatic Brain Injury, Multiple Sclerosis, Down Syndrome, Spina Bifida, Genetic Disorders and Emotional Disturbances.They also offer group programs, individual lessons, corporate workshops and a program specifically designed for military members. In honor of Veteran’s Day, Pal-O-Mine wants you to know just how they can help those who have served in our military, along with those who are still serving our nation. For more than four thousand years, horses have been an integral part of warfare. Today, horses are still playing an important role in war, this time in the recovery of military veterans who have suffered emotional and/ or physical injuries. Pal-O-Mine Equestrian is an EAGALA Designed Military Program.This designation asserts that EAGALA Certified Professionals working with the military have specialized training and experience in the military community. Sessions at the farm are action, not talk and they offer individual, group and family sessions. Pal-O-Mine offers programs to Verterans from Vietnam, Gulf War, Iraq and Afghanistan and for Service men and women who fought in Operation Iraqi Freedom,
Operation New Dawn, Operation Enduring Freedom and for Active Duty Service Members. It’s not always easy to ask for help, but the benefits of doing so outweigh the fear. One military member who received help from this organizaiton mentioned the following, “For someone in the military like me, it’s hard to swallow my pride and ask for help. This was a safe environment to open up in. A Message From Lindenhurst Mayor Michael Lavorata Winter is coming! The first official day of winter is December 21st, and beyond the obvious inconvenience and discomfort of a winter storm or severe-weather condition, winter weather can cause real damage to homes. Roof leaks, lack of insulation, or foundation issues can all have a massive impact on your quality of life. So, it is important to think about winter preparedness. How can you winterize
your home? Here are a few simple steps to be ready for the winter: • Add attic insulation. Many of us do not consider the efficiency of our home’s insulation, but it can make all the difference in the winter. Before the winter begins, check your attic to see whether there are any improvements you can make. • Caulk any cracks. Inspect the inside and outside of your home.
Look for cracks that might let cold air into the home during the cold weather. • Install storm windows and doors. If your doors or windows are old, chances are they are not the most efficient option. Consider replacing your windows and doors with newer, environmentally and energy efficient ones. • Inspect oil or gas home heating systems. Every winter season, have a professional inspect your
burner to be certain it is working to total efficiency, and not in a state of disrepair. • Avoid frozen pipes. The last thing you want this winter are frozen pipes that burst because you did not properly prepare them. A frozen water pipe can burst and flood your house or basement. So, be sure to take preventative measures against pipes freezing. If you have a swimming pool, sprinkler system, or outside
faucet, it is important that you properly winterize those as well. • Replace roof shingles and clean your gutters. Have someone hop on the roof to inspect and replace loose or missing shingles to avoid potentially devastating in-home disasters from melting snow and precipitation making their way inside your home. At the same time, clean out your gutters; remove leaves and other debris that can
block the flow of rain and melting snow & ice. These ideas to prepare for winter weather will make your season warm and bright!
