ALZHEIMER’S WALK -Hundreds walked to support the fight against Alzheimer’s and raise funds for the 50,000 Long Islanders living with the disease at the second annual “Alzheimer’s Walk in the Park” hosted by the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America (AFA) and the Town of Babylon.

Hundreds walked to support the fight against Alzheimer’s and raise funds for the 50,000 Long Islanders living with the disease at the second annual “Alzheimer’s Walk in the Park” hosted by the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America (AFA) and the Town of Babylon. The walk took place at the AFA-Town of Babylon Respite Care Relief Park at Babylon Town Hall. The walk raised more than $30,000 to support services for Long Island families impacted by Alzheimer’s disease, as well as research toward better treatment and a cure. AFA is currently funding Long Island-based research projects at Stony Brook University, NYU Winthrop Hospital and the Feinstein Institutes for Medical Research.

“We’re extraordinarily grateful to everyone who took part in this event,” said Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr., President and CEO of the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America. “Seeing the enthusiasm and eagerness of all those involved in the walk was inspiring. Veterans Day begins with Armistice Day Veterans Day is a byproduct of the end of World War I, when Germany and the Allied Nations signed the Treaty of Versailles, formally ceasing fighting and establishing terms of peace. On November 11, 1919, the first anniversary of the signing of the treaty, the first Armistice Day events were held. Armistice Day was initially a legal holiday to honor the end of World War I only, states History.com. The United States Congress passed a resolution in 1926 for an annual observance and November 11 became a national holiday starting in 1938. However, in 1954, after the country had been embroiled in both World War II and the Korean War, Congress amended the Act of 1938 by renaming the commemoration “Veterans Day” to honor veterans of all wars. Veterans Day in October? For a short time, according to Military.com, thanks to the Uniform Holiday Bill, which in 1968 established three-day weekends for federal employees by celebrating national holidays on Mondays, Veterans Day was moved to the fourth Monday of October — the first being October 25, 1971. However, many people did not agree with this

decision, continuing to honor the holiday on the original date. In 1975, President Gerald Ford signed a new law that returned Veterans Day to November 11, beginning in 1978. Since then parades, memorial events, volunteer efforts and other celebrations revolving around veterans have been held on November 11.

Veterans around the world Many countries, including the United States, celebrate veterans on or near November 11. America’s closest neighbor to the north, Canada, commemorates veterans on Remembrance Day (also November 11), as does the United Kingdom. Britain also has Remembrance Sunday, which is the second Sunday of November. Remembrance Day is also called Poppy Day, when people of the Commonwealth member states wear a red poppy flower in honor of military members who have died in the line of duty.

In special attendance was Gina Costa-Lieneck, who fought tirelessly for “Brianna’s Law” for stricter, boater-safety requirements in New York State after her 11-year old daughter was killed as a result of someone else’s negligence. Payton Lewis, a second grade student at Deauville Gardens West Elementary School in the Copiague School District, is doing his part to help save the environment and spark a

green movement within his school district and community. What started as a recycling effort for Lewis has transitioned into educating his peers. Lewis has launched

his first initiative in the Copiague School District: Payton’s Planet. The first recycling pail is located in the faculty lounge at the Copiague Middle School and encourages faculty and

staff to recycle their bottles and cans. Lewis, along with his mother Shakira, will pick up the bottles each Friday. The funds collected will be used to purchase additional pails, which

they hope will become a staple throughout the school district. Lewis wants to keep working to encourage others to save the planets, no matter how big or small their efforts may be.
