Lindenhurst Football and Cheerleading League Hosts Bobby Brandenberger Memorial Field Naming Ceremony
Venetian Shores Football Field Renamed In Honor Of The “Godfather Of Lindenhurst” On Sunday, October 17, 2021, the Lindenhurst Football and Cheerleading League hosted a naming ceremony for the Venetian Shores football field in honor of Bobby Brandenberger. Brandenberger, a lifelong Lindenhurst resident who passed away last year, was the President of the
Lindenhurst Football and Cheerleading League as well as a volunteer firefighter for over 40 years, eventually being named Captain. He made certain any child could play football by going as far as buying equipment himself for them. A Trustee for the Lindenhurst Board of Education and a baseball coach in the
Lindenhurst National Little League, Brandenberger was an integral part of the Lindenhurst community. The Town of Babylon is honored to be able to commemorate Brandenberger’s dedication to his community by naming the football field the “Bobby Brandenberger Memorial Field.”

Lindenhurst Moose Lodge Celebrates 69th Anniversary
The Lindenhurst Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge #1491 celebrated its 69th Anniversary with its annual dinner. The
celebration included special recognition of Christopher Ahlers, who received his Fellowship Degree and blue jacket.
The Fellowship Degree is awarded to members who have demonstrated leadership ability; by giving their time and
effort to serve on multiple Moose committees, and by being a loyal, enthusiastic, and active member of the lodge. Mr. Ahlers was also honored as the 2021 Moose of the Year. Also recognized was Moose member,
firefighter Mark Miller who along with Lt. John Tighe Jr., was named New York State Firefighter of the Year. The Moose Lodge also honored and thanked Peter Harrigan for serving as Administrator for the past
15 years. Mayor Michael Lavorata said, “Congratulations to Christopher Ahlers on his Fellowship Degree and the 69th Anniversary of the Moose Lodge.”

Long Islanders are invited to take park in the “Alzheimer’s Walk in The Park” and can register in advance by visiting www. afawalk.com. Proceeds raised at the family-friendly event, which will also include health and wellness activities and refreshments,
will help support families affected by Alzheimer’s disease through AFA’s programs, services, and research towards a cure. Community service opportunities are available for students. The Walk will take place at the AFA-Town of Babylon Respite Care Relief Park at Babylon Town Hall, a firstin-the-nation park created specifically to give families a dementia-friendly place that is peaceful, scenic and provides educational information about dementia-related illnesses, caregiving, and support services. The Charity of the Month for October is
Long Island Coalition for the Homeless www.addessthehomeless.org Long Island Coalition for the Homeless (LICH) was founded in 1985. Their mission is to end homelessness on Long Island and alleviate the issues associated with homelessness and poverty for homeless and at risk persons in Nassau and Suffolk Counties.
Located in the Amityville Community Resource Center, this Boutique is open on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 10AM-3PM by appointment only (at this time, shelter staff/case managers must schedule an appointment to pick up their clients’ items). Upon entering the boutique, you can expect to find clothing, nonperishable food, new bedding and pillows, personal care and feminine care items, toiletries and much more! The clothing options can range from casual to business attire and there is clothing available in all sizes; infant through adult. They are currently looking for volunteers who are organized, fun and dedicated to sort and display items at the Boutique. Even giving just a few hours of your time can be a huge help. Additionally, they are in need of various donations. The most needed items are baby diapers, formula and wipes, toothbrushes, toothpaste, feminine products, plus-size clothing, school supplies (especially binders, dividers and spiral notebooks), along with non-perishable food items. They are also looking for new and gently used housewares. If you are interested in making a donation to or volunteering with the Boutique, please email boutique@addressthehomeless.org. Additionally, they are holding a Volunteer Day On Saturday, November 13th at the Boutique. This day allows anyone who is vaccinated to come down and get involved, whether it be for community service hours or not. There will be two

Masks are required and volunteers who will attend are encouraged to bring a donation of non-perishable food (canned or boxed goods) with them to this Volunteer Day. Signs and symptoms of struggle are not always easily identifiable. PTSD, if left untreated, can lead to substance
abuse issues and even suicide. PTSD is a growing epidemic; nationally there is an average of 22 veteran suicides a day. More can and should be done to help people that are struggling. Studies show that Long Island has the second largest population of Veterans in the United States, second only to San Diego, California. Suffolk County has approximately 85,000 veterans and Nassau County has approximately 75,000 veterans. Instructors, practitioners and studies have shown the benefits of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Yoga on the emotional,

The Complicated Connection Between Black Cats, Witches And Halloween Come October, it’s hard to miss the many indelible images associated with Halloween. Homeowners may decorate their home exteriors with scarecrows, inflatable ghouls and goblins, and jack-o’-lanterns. Local businesses also may get in on the fun, offering “spooktacular” sales and decorating their storefronts with images of vampires, witches and other symbols of Halloween. Black cats have become synonymous with Halloween decor, but few may know how this association came to be. According to History.com, the notion of black cats as bad omens can be
traced to the Middle Ages. Back then, people believed witches avoided detection by turning themselves into black cats. The perception of black cats as something more than mere felines may even pre-date the Middle Ages. For example, in Norse mythology, Freyja, a goddess of, among other things, a type of Late Scandinavian Iron Age magic known as “Seior,” was believed to have ridden a chariot pulled by two cats. That connection to sorcery could explain the link between black cats and witches that continues to be made today. Despite the lengthy history
suggesting black cats are bad omens, it’s not all bad for these dark-colored felines. One researcher at the Carnegie Museum of Natural History found that Welsh folklore depicted black cats as harbingers of good luck, and even noted their ability to predict the weather. Black cats are one of many symbols of Halloween. And much like jack-o’-lanterns and trick-ortreating, the story of how black cats came to be associated with Halloween is interesting and thought-provoking.
